It wasnt just about signing tho. She used her hand a lot more than most people do on a daily basis. Signing, painting and doing hair. Doing hair alone could have caused that.

Precisely. Apparently, this kind of health issue is more common than we knew. Actress Camryn Manheim, who was an ASL interpreter as well as an actress, developed arthritis in her hands and arms and had to curtail, if not give up entirely -- her career as an interpreter. The character of Melody is irritating as h-ll. It's one thing to be upset that a friend can no longer communicate -- it's another to ACCUSE her of doing it for "sympathy" or "attention." That's taking entitlement too far. I'd have been angry too -- and it would have meant a permanent end of the friendship.

@@Marie-hq3yx As someone who is HOH, I second what you are saying. The strain to try and read lips and hear is exhausting, and if that strain continued at home, I would become extremely tired. On really bad days, even talking to my own mom is exhausting because her voice falls into my worst ranges. If I were in Daphne's position, I would be upset too, especially since Regina doesn't even look for other ways to compensate. She leaves Daphne to read lips all the damn time without thinking about the strain. This problem is much more of a contributing factor to Daphne's meltdown against Regina in season 3 than anyone wants to admit. Between not signing to Daphne anymore and potentially contributing to the rupture of Angelo's aneurism right when he was about to become a signing parent, I don't blame Daphne in the slightest. Yes, there were other factors, but Regina, whether she realized it or not, pushed Daphne to the limit with her behaviors around signing.

@@SopranoRocker2010 Daphne is being a sh-t. Has she had it hard? Sure. Struggled? You bet. But if your mother is suffering from a serious medical issue that prevents her from communicating, you don't pitch a fit. You get upset, and then you deal with it. My mother got oral cancer. After her surgery, where they slit her from ear to ear, took out four lymph nodes and half her tongue -- the only way she could communicate with us was with a white board and marker. She was likely NEVER going to be able to speak ever again. Forget speak -- we were told she probably would never be able to swallow either. We had one week with her. Then she had a heart attack, was revived but suffered brain damage, and died a week later. Life isn't fair or equitable. I learned that. And the writers of these characters need to learn it too. Life doesn't give a 💩 about your high horse.

I kind of feel bad for regina in this scene. I mean Arthritis is painful. If she actually did sign all for the sake of communicating with her daughter by the end of the day she would be in chronic pain. She would cry because of that pain. Oh but daphne gets to communicate with her mom. She told the truth and melody and daphne get upset over it? Yeah a true friend would be like "What can I do to get you through this? Same with daphne. They have to realize that life happens and sometimes you can't always control what happens. This actually could possibly happen in real life. Arthritis may run in her family and she used her hands a lot. Painting, cutting hair, and all the sign language can easily make your hands be in pain. It's a muscle worked over and over and over. She could possibly use one hand but every time she would sign she would cringe in pain. That's not worth it. I'm sure it hurts regina that she cant communicate with her daughter but if that was my mother I would cry for her. I would understand. Teenagers 🙄 I am so glad I'm not that age anymore. Where you dont know what being an adult is like. I'm proud to be 29 years old. I also can understand that this really is an emotional written scene but lacks the realization of daphne realizing your mom is in chronic pain and shes fought for her daughter everyday.

Daphne being upset I understand, but it doesn't appear (from this scene at least it's been a while since I've seen this episode) that she blames her mom for it. She's hurt, but as long as she's not blaming her, she's not reacting wrong. Of course it's upsetting for her! I actually took Daphne's reaction as needing to go cry because this does affect her, but not wanting to make her mom feel worse about it, because it isn't really her fault. Melody was awful to her.

Melody as her friend was awful to her. Just because she isn't aware of it happening to anyone else doesn't mean it isn't true. Daphne's reaction is more understandable she is upset and probably scared but showing it in the wrong way. She has always been able to be herself in her own home at the very least and be comfortable because there is a two-way communication of signing. She can lip read but - I'm not deaf so i'm just guessing -that takes more effort and is probably quite straining, figuring out what word a mouth is forming. It was a shock. she was still adjusting to the switch and all that entails and now her rock is crumbling

N.J Boltz lip reading is really hard and completely inaccurate. I’m not profoundly Deaf, but I’m HoH and people always assume I’ve managed because I can lipread, but lipreading mostly works on a mix of body language, guessing and hearing slight sounds and trying to work out what makes the most sense. I also developed a chronic illness that has left me in a wheelchair and both those reactions broke my heart because I’ve seen both aimed at me. Her daughter was clearly processing and walked away to try to find a way to cope and come to terms with the changes. Melody’s reaction is what from my experience is the most common one, suddenly everyone is so angry at you for the changes that they blame you for it, tell you that you’re not doing enough even tho the changes impact you far more than anyone else and blame you on faking it for attention, as if all the horrible things that come with such a disability don’t make it something no one wants to fake. No one understands me when I can’t use my hands because they have tremors so hard I can’t move them, I can’t imagine how much worse it would be for her with it being even more invisible to everyone else.
