almost 2 years late, but i think "hope ur ok" was the closer for the album because she's essentially trying to say that even though she's going through emotional heartbreak, there are people with other situations that are way worse than hers. the scale of emotional endurance that they had to go through would be 10x harder to do than Olivia's situation. it really humanises her and adds relatability to her experience too. she's saying that she will be ok herself, but she hopes for the same to those around her.

Yeah I’m also a queer American and I picked up on it too. One of my good friends is Australian and we actually talked about this. She said how it’s not that being queer isn’t accepted, it just that it’s not as talked about there. fun fact: driver’s license was her first song which started with a sound of a car being started & her last song in the album- hope ur ok ended with the sound of a car being stopped (you can listen it if you hear carefully)

i love "hope ur ok" because not only does it discuss homophobia/queer youth (which i always appreciate in a song being as i have been out since i was 11) but when she says "i hope you know how proud i am you were created with the courage to unlearn all of their hatred" shes saying "you're not your parents, just because they believe something doesn't make YOU a bad person" and that is a message i, as well as many other people I'm sure, definitely need from time to time. When i hear the second verse talking about olivia's middle school friend and how her parents "hated who she loved" I absolutely lose it cause even tho I wasn't alone, my parents were home a lot, their gay jokes/bigotry made me feel so freaking isolated, to the point where i didn't come out till i was 18 (and that was on accident lmao) that song really speaks to me on multiple levels.

Ok but didn’t anyone notice in deja vu when she says “we kinda do sound the same” there’s a harmony which is indicating two voices. Olivia’s voice and the other girl’s voice. Wonderful lyrics, some songs slow and easy going while others are dancey and upbeat, the bass guitar playing, Olivia’s wonderful voice and power.

I'm so excited for Olivia's new single in 10 days!!! I love her songs

you guys cut the part in jealousy, jealousy when she says “you go out every night in your daddys new car yeah you’re living the life....etc” part and that was my favorite part of the song i was hoping to get your inputtt :(

FUN FACT olivia actually didn't technically sample new year's day, it was interpolated in 1step forward 3 steps back which means that's it's olivia playing the piano on the track to the same melody of new year's day but it's tweaked a bit THIS MEANS that she's not using the sample directly from the rep album (which would give money and credits to taylor's old label) but instead it gives credit directly to taylor since she hasn't re-recorded rep yet! what a fucking power move by olivia

I love All I Want as well. First time I heard it was before she's famous and I was already captivated by her vocal and songwriting.

The part where you guys pointed out her ending brutal with “Don’t know where to start” while it’s the first track on the album was the same reaction I got when I first heard the song because I’ve adapted the way you two analyze songs😅 I watched tons of reactions where I waited for them to point it out, but non of them did until you two. So the fact that we can actually share the same brain cells means a lot to me!!!

@@chatsandreacts This just made me happier huhu but it's true though. Not everyone pays attention to the arrangements of songs in an album. I admit that before, I didn't care much about the sequence until you two (as well as your friends in the background) came into my life! I'm grateful for that because it really gives a new perspective to an album which makes us love them more.

She said it’s called sour because it’s about the souring of a romantic relationship and also your relationship with yourself. She said growing up she was so confident in herself and then after that first heartbreak, she suddenly had all these doubts and questioned her self-worth. That first kind of rejection is one of the most unpleasant shocks of adulthood - that someone who knew you so intimately could revert back to being a complete stranger. And so she said a lot of self-doubt crept in and she felt her relationship with herself souring. She also said she wanted to play on the idea that she’s dealing with emotions that girls are usually kinda looked down upon for feeling. Like jealousy, spite, rage. We are made to feel like it’s childish and cringey to feel as intensely as we do if a guy has cheated or something, and are made fun of for it. She’s embracing those emotions and the fact that she’s sour unapologetically💞💞

Omg I love that you brought up 21st Century Girls! It’s my favorite unreleased song and I really hope it’s one her next album

I love how you guys are constantly talking over each other but it's in a way that finishes each others sentences/thoughts and for some reason I find it really funny but fun to listen to. Both of you are really pretty too!

So “hope ur ok” and the “courage to unlearn all of their hatred” I feel had to do with homophobic parents. Because earlier she says “her parents hated who she loved”

it definitely can be. especially at the end where she just uses "you" and no gendered pronouns. she's trying to send this as a general message to her audience, and she has a lot of lgbtq+ fans, so it feels really nice

I definitely think so, especially the “cared more about the Bible than being good to their own child” seems like homophobia to me

I see "favorite crime" as the closing chapter of the relationship and the heartbreak that came with it and then "hope ur ok" as her showcasing a different side of her songwriting abilities. It reminds me of what Taylor did with folklore and evermore in a way because those albums were more storytelling based with Taylor using her own experiences as an influence for writing about situations separate from her own. I feel like "hope ur ok" is the perfect album closer because it shows her depth as a songwriter and is kind of an indicator of what she's capable of. Her talent goes beyond writing songs about only heartbreak and I feel like this was the perfect way to give people a taste of that. SO ecstatic that you guys made a reaction video to this! Love this channel sm 💗

also if you listen to the end of "hope ur ok" it sounds like a car ,and that could be connected to drivers license.i also think it could be saying at the end of the song ,to the person the songs are about that she hopes they're ok too . but the song also seems like it's to the lgbtq+ youth.

this album gives me goosebumps like the lyrics are incredible so good at portraying emotions

Olivia made me appreciate music and the reason why I listen to Taylor swift is because of her! she made me look at music with a new perspective and now I do listen to lyrics carefully and interpret my thoughts and try to find what it means. I love her.

28:14 ok but just imagine: it's Olivia's concert and she performs this song but instead of the second verse starting, Taylor comes out on the stage and continues singing New year's day and they finish the song doing a duet. That would be awesome

What I love about this is the fact that her songs kind of open you up and lower your guard then invade with the truth, although it seems, pun intended, brutal, I think it works pretty well, and people love it because it's so relatable

Hope ur okay is the most beautiful song she ever made, the bridge is so beautiful as if you're lifted to heaven

Taylor swift’s daughter carrying the torch the future is in safe hands. Mama swift has to do a song with her.

she *did* write brutal after drivers license! I’m pretty sure it was in march, making it the last song written for the album :)

I loved "hope ur okay" its my favorite song on the album because I was in similar situations to the song, and when i first heard it i was in a lot of stuff with family and now i'm okay but when i first heard it i wasnt and i cried and it made me so happy at that moment to know that someone actually caried, and the person i was living with was abuseive and it was hard to deal with.. and this song helped me so much. Also loved your reaction so much. ❤

I wish everyone would understand that the album isn’t all about josh and Sabrina, she wrote some of these songs when she was younger. Love you guys !

Omg that’s why i felt like “i know u get deja vu” sounded similar to “i don’t wanna keep secrets just to keep you” and the whole bridge of deja vu just screams cruel summer vibes

Being straight out of a toxic relationship, this whole album i related to, every song was accurate. I sobbed my eyes out with these songs and felt understood. (Especially with Traitor because the girl he "cheated" on me with, he took 3 days date her)

fun fact: ‘brutal’ is actually one of the final tracks she finished writing for the album and it almost WASN’T the opening track !!!

I loved this breakdown and actually hadn't listened to the album before this video, I feel like Olivia is also drawing on 'lesser known' indie artists such as Phoebe Bridgers, Fenne Lily, Julia Jacklin etc. Would love for you to listen/react to Phoebe Bridgers! x

little fun fact, in music theory what olivia does on deja vu with the harmonies is called ‘text painting’/word painting’. it means that the lyrics reflect the music. like when a melody goes lower when the lyrics mention the word down and vice versa. there’s tons of cool examples and it’s always a good sign when producers and writers knowingly incorporate that 🥰

There are three call backs of the lyrics reflected in DejaVu. The first two are obvious, the laugh “Ha-ha-ha-ha…”, and singing in “harmony.” The third one is commonly missed: “She probably tells you she loves you between the chorus and the verse.” It’s a bit masked by the music but Olivia then whispers “I love you” right between the verse and chorus.
