In that sense, it's also a tie-in to '22' because of the lyric "It feels like the perfect night to dress up like hipsters and make fun of our exes." I swear to god, this woman is a genius. 💀

Apparently, All Too Well was the first song she wrote for Red, so it makes perfect sense why all the lyrics link back to all the other songs on the album. It's like she knew she'd have to cut all of it down, but she wanted all of what she mentioned in All Too Well, originally, to be mentioned on the album so she wrote all the other songs, like, making sure those lyrics were mentioned, just in a different way...omg. HER MIND!

The actress is Anne Hathaway, they all went out together and she found her in the bathroom as Taylor expresses in the song. Anne H. in an interview said that she knows Tay for a while now and she saw her become in who she is

It’s like she’s saying he was almost incapable of loving her, how she almost knew that going into the relationship with him but still hoped for something, but then he started showing signs that he was growing distant from her, but how even then she looked for beauty in him. That first fall of snow, those very first signs that you’re losing him, mixed in with the beauty of it glistening.

I always made the connection between that line and “tolerate it” where she says “gain the weight of you then lose it” where “weight” is referring to the emotional baggage she got from the whole relationship. Yeah, she really is. It's sad how some people still see her as a "typical main pop girl" with her hit songs. They really don't know what they're missing out and how genius she is. Many people think all of her fans are just shallow kids or teenagers with nothing else to do but they don't know that Taylor has THIS side. When in reality, the real reason is clearly due to Katy Perry dating John Mayer, which clearly put her off. Nothing wrong about writing a song about anyone she wants, but having a whole video campaign about pitting woman against Katy, and trying to find every big A-list name she could pull as me vs you, was whack. What doubles down her pettiness? The fact that she backtracks years later and went out of her way to blame “the media” when it was her who was out for revenge regarding Katy. She also posts a picture of Katy’s Olive Branch gift, with the words stating she is sorry. Which came across as really childish. If Katy never had apologised to her, Taylor would be still taking shots at her (purposely dropping her catalogue release on Spotify the day Katy Perry dropped her album.)

Yess!! And in Sad Beautiful Tragic a line goes “kiss me, try to fix it, could you just try to listen?” Which is exactly the scene portrayed after the fight scene in the short video. Like he doesn’t event want to be bothered to listen the reason why she is pissed off, as soon as she starts arguing and she HAS a point he just storms off and then kisses her to make up without actually listening to what she is saying! I don't know if you guys addressed this concept or not but I believe the reason Taylor kept repeating " I was there " ( especially in the 10 minute version) is because he made her feel like everything they've been through wasn't in fact what she thought it was. She had the idea that it was love which he refused to admit and so when he broke up with her there was this gaslighting/ manipulation feel that he didn’t see it the way she did which maybe made her doubt all the moments they've experienced that were pure love, so she keeps repeating the concept of I was there I am sure I remember it in an attempt to prove that it in fact happened the way she saw it. I don't know if that makes sense but it's very striking after the short film and the 10 minute version! I love you so much, guyss

This song is UNPARALLELED. I cannot believe we have it after almost a decade, it’s actually so overwhelming 😰

This is my comfort video, I think I've rewatched this at least 10 times just for the pure serotonin

RED is the color of passion as well as anger. It makes sense that the All Too Well 10min version, the first song she wrote in the album, would have more of an angry undertone. Like reminiscing everything then thinking why did I let it happen but still miss the person and the moments when it was perfect... just like the vault track Better Man

I think "I'm a soldier who's returning half her weight" is less about losing his weight and being free but actually losing her own weight and more like: That love affair was like a war and it wrecked me so badly I'm barely alive now but the war's over now and I am still alive (but also maimed). I think it shows even more how deeply this thing hurt her…

I think it's also metaphorical, and that's why she sings about being maimed later on - some parts of her (soul) were lost/died.

The fact that now Taylor is in a relationship that no matter how bad the fight or how hard the relationship can be, it is worth it. That it is worth it, to end up with him. Listening to all too well and sobbing over how heartbroken she was to listening to lover and realizing that she finally found the love she deserves.

“Keychain on the ground” melody sounds just like “meet me behind the mall” or “wanting was enough” from August!!

You lot are the first reactors I've seen that really appreciate the line "The idea you had of me, who was she? A never-needy, ever-lovely jewel, whose shine reflects on you." Almost immediately that was my favorite new lyric because it so succinctly describes people who view their partner as a status symbol instead of an actual human being.

When in reality, the real reason is clearly due to Katy Perry dating John Mayer, which clearly put her off. Nothing wrong about writing a song about anyone she wants, but having a whole video campaign about pitting woman against Katy, and trying to find every big A-list name she could pull as me vs you, was whack. What doubles down her pettiness? The fact that she backtracks years later and went out of her way to blame “the media” when it was her who was out for revenge regarding Katy. She also posts a picture of Katy’s Olive Branch gift, with the words stating she is sorry. Which came across as really childish. If Katy never had apologised to her, Taylor would be still taking shots at her (purposely dropping her catalogue release on Spotify the day Katy Perry dropped her album.)

I love how she said “less screaming” then she proceeds to screaming lol such genuine reactions from these beautiful girls

the line "a solider returning half her weight" makes me think of how she is trying to find her old herself but she can't because this whole love affair mess took away half of her, because she lost so much of who she used to be because of it. and she cannot gain that back but have build up herself anew

I find the lyric "double cross my mind" so genius because as we all know "double cross" is a synonym for "betray" and it's like her mind is "betraying her" by thinking about him.

Did anyone else also possibly get the vibe that "I'm a soldier who's returning half her weight" could have been in reference to Taylor's struggle with her eating disorder? A serious breakup like this would really trigger those kinds of self image issues and the documentary placed the worst of her struggle during the Red/1989 period. Heartbreaking no matter how you interpert it.

No. I've seen a ton of talk about it, but I think people need to stop. She never said she had an eating disorder, but that she did have some disordered eating and exercising practices. She was also incredibly thin before, but dressed in less tight and less revealing clothing before Red. Who knows? It's not our business to speculate when and why she began her struggle.

And of course age is one of the few things a person can’t change/has zero control over so it’s an infuriating reason (in the moment) to break up with someone because of. (and even more infuriating when he/she continues to date younger people)

On another note. I was crying like a baby when I heard the lyrics " it's supposed to be fun, turning 21". I'm heartbroken for her that she had to go through such a painful thing on her 21 birthday. I mean, it's a big deal for everyone, right? But then one year later she had her "I don't know about you, but i'm feeling 22" moment, so empowering, coming of age..so glad that her 22 birthday was the one she would have deserved on her 21st

i took the line “you who charmed my dad with self-effacing jokes // sipping coffee like you were on a late night show” to mean that jake even got her dad’s stamp of approval. he was let into her life, her father liked him, “but then he watched [her] watch the front door all night willing [him] to come” and that’s why it hurt even more. he had everyone fooled, and didn’t just hurt her, but hurt her family as well. the “but” there implies a contradicting statement, yknow? like her dad was originally charmed by him *but* he was also there when jake’s not so nice sides showed ANYWAYS!! LOVE THE VIDEO GUYS, ITS ALWAYS SO FUN TO SHARE THE EXCITEMENT WITH YOU

This! There are sooo many women/people who are in relationships like this! You wake up every single day with both the highest hopes that your love will be fully returned but also get your heart re-broken every single day when it doesn’t happen. Unfortunately it’s easy to remember those many many days. All too well. It’s exhausting!

Also more notes on the “i’m a soldier who’s returning half her weight”: She references the relationship as a war she’s coming back from, and it’s known that when soldiers return from war the look malnourished and physically will, which also implies that the breakup had an impact on her heath (she lost a lot of weight - which also connects to tolerate it “gain the weight of you then loose it” and what you guys said)

I love how this version and the short film completely change the meaning...'I remember it all too well' used to feel sweet and nostalgic and sentimental, now it feels like she is addressing the gaslighting he did in their relationship. She is telling him he can't pretend the relationship wasn't real or rare or powerful, or that he didn't treat her like shit, because she remembers it ALL. And it probably took her a while to reclaim and trust her own memory of everything because that's what gaslighting does !! AHH

The “sacred prayer and we’d swear to remember it” lyric reminded me of Cornelia Street where she says “sacred new beginnings that became my religion.” Another example of imagery/language in her heartbreak being reframed in a positive way later in her loving relationship. I’m so happy that she has found this amazing love with Joe 😭

Seriously, this woman makes my brain hurt. All too well was already a masterpiece. Now it has reached another level of greatness. Now that the full version is here, the first version makes me think of a movie soundtrack that plays in bits and pieces throughout the movie. In contrast, this full version is like hearing that same soundtrack in its entirety at the end of the movie when the credits roll.

The actress is actually Anne Hathaway. She had at the time just been in a movie with Jake called Love and Other Drugs and comforted Taylor

After you mentioning the "half her weight" line reminding you of "Tolerate It" I went back and listened to the song and HOLY SHIT there are so many possible clues that could lead back to Jake. Could've definitely inspired the lyrics for sure.

Can we talk about how genius "In this city's barren cold, I still remember the first fall of snow and how it glistened as it fell" is?! Literally saying that when snow first falls it's beautiful and glistening and exciting, just like when she was falling in love. But the snow led to barren cold. The more it falls, the worse it gets. Just as the more she falls, the worse it gets.
