i remember as a kid of 8 years old going to a big exibition in a museum about John Bauer and seeing all of his pictures on a big screen in a dark cinema....it was magic. John Bauer captured the spirit and soul of the scandinavian folksagas and forest.

As a Swede myself I love to see this. Reminds me of my Grandmas bookshelves.

I got bland tomtar och troll when I was 5.(1945) It was printed in 1917 I think, had belonged to my father. Somehow it was not scary, but I began to see trolls now and then. They are deeply rooted in the Swedish character I think, they are recognized immediately!

Thanks so much for this review! I needed to confirm if this edition included Agneta and it does! Just for the ones looking to buy this, Floris Edition from 2019 has more pages and more illus than 2004 ed, but this older edition includes stories that the centenary one (2019) does not have. I think the newer edition looks great but it sacrificed some really gorgeous tales.

As a child my grandma read some of the stories. My favorit was about a young boy trying to get his cow back the troll had stolen. He meets other trolls, a witch and a bear on his way in to the deep dark forrest. Not gonna spoil anything but I loved that storie.

I was so excited when that book was released. Up till then, trying to find material on Bauer's art was difficult. This is a great collection. Wish it had a better quality production.

You have so many beautiful books. I'm only now starting to build my library, hope to catch up to you some time :D. I'm thinking of starting with the Barnes and Noble leather ones.

Darker than Grimms Fairytales? Wow... There's more truth in these tales than on the News of late!
