    Just submitted another DCI show for you, 1989 Phantom Regiment. DCI has been around since 1972 and has evolved a lot since then, so it's nice to go back and see some of the older shows; they just have a different feel to them. If you like story shows, watch Carolina Crown 2013. Classic love story, paired with the best hornline in modern DCI. Can't go wrong!

    You start music in elementary like 4th grade. You learn a lot of music and different instruments in middle school 6th to 8th. When you hit 9th you join the marching band and start competing in field shows. I graduated high school doing marching band, we do concert orchestra symphony and jazz band when football season is over. These people continued in to college where as I go married and had kids. Now my kids learned music and I get to perfect their music. People spend their whole schooling to do this . Band is some of my favorite memories. Even doing field shows and parades in the hottttt summers heavy clothes mesmerizing music and counting steps to make these shows while keeping footing (left right left right). Very hard work, well worth every miserable moment. ❤

    I love seeing outside reactions to DCI shows! While competitive circuits exist outside of the US, it's the most popular here. One important thing, videos do NOT do these guys justice. These Corps are LOUD. If you've ever been to like a really loud concert before, this is pretty much the same. Truly an incredible experience to have in person!

    Spartacus was -- according to legend -- a slave in the Roman er who led a revolt and was eventually executed for it. The "I am Spartacus" line comes from a film version of the legend where the Romans have the revolting slaves surrounded and offer to go easy on them if they surrender Spartacus, their leader. Spartacus, played by Kirk Douglas, offers himself up to save the others, standing and stating "I am Spartacus." Then others slaves start repeating it, making it impossible for the Romans to be sure who's the REAL Spartacus. In the Regiment show, "I am Spartacus" was originally repeated only by members of the corps -- mostly the color guard -- but eventually the AUDIENCE started saying it...resulting in a legendary moment of audience-participation

    They're sweaty because this championship DCI contest is held in August...summer time here.

  • @RyanBoots
    @RyanBoots8 ай бұрын

    Phantom had long been known as the best corps to never win the championship (they had tied for first in '96 and took second place on several occasions, most recently in 2006). And they had come in at second place in semifinals the night before. It was a huge, huge deal when they won the title. The murder of the emperor was a new ending to the show, added one week before the championship. Basically they made it clear that they were going to continue killing people until they won the title. Overall, Phantom is all about the carnage. This isn't the only show they've done that included an on-field murder, and I'm pretty sure their competitive placement in any given year is generally correlated with the number of deaths in the show.

    I’m in a high school band and my director was in DCI and he is still obsessed with it. Because of this he told us a “fun” fact about this show(it’s not fun). At 10:27 when the guys throws her down she actually gets knocked out which is why it may seem like the color guard guy struggles to pick her up. He is basically carrying dead weight. When he brings her to the sideline it seems like he tells the judge and it seems like soon after he is calling someone through a possible mic he has. I think he also goes over there to check on here again. Idk if that’s what was happening with the judge but all I know is that she got knocked out.

    Matthew, I'm from the HQ city of the Phantom Regiment--Rockford, IL. If you don't understand the story here, you ought to watch the Kirk Douglas movie version which was released in 1960. Without knowing the story, you won't understand much of the theatrics. One thing I wish you'd done is given the performance a little more volume for us. In addition to all of this that we're seeing, there's what's called the pit, where the xylophones, etc. are playing. These kids travel overnight to the next performance, then spend the day out in the sun practicing, then put on a show that night, then repeat the process all summer long, and when they turn 21, they're too old to continue. You'd like to see this live? It's held in mid-Aug. each summer in Indianapolis. A very short synopsis of the story is that Spartacus was a slave during the Roman Empire days around 200BC, and eventually led a slave revolt which ultimately failed. The Roman commander said he would let the thousands of men in the slave army live if they'd just give up Spartacus, but they couldn't do it, so when he admitted he was Spartacus, the entire slave army drowned him out with "I'm Spartacus", and every last one was crucified along the Appian Way.
