43 years ago I first read the Hobbit, then the LOTR, then almost everything else Tolkien ever published, and his Son published posthumously. And now multiple re-readings later Tolkien remains my favourite author of all time. And altohugh it is finally gratifying to have pretty much the entire English speaking world familiar with Middle Earth, it does sadden me that fewer seem to know Middle Earth through Tolkiens actual words, rather than PJ's good though lesser movies. It makes me a little sad

The three hairs Gimli received is actually really significant to the lore! Gimli has zero idea how important that gift technically was...Legolas, an elf, DOES know. (It's why he smiles softly when he tells him) There was a powerful elf that asked three separate times for hair in the past. She saw darkness in his heart and knew he'd use her hair for ill intent. She said, no. When Gimli asked for a single hair, to remember her beauty, she saw nothing but innocence and desire to uphold her memory. She gave him, a dwarf, the three she denied an elf. (It speaks to Gimli's character, but also not to judge based on race.)

Well said. And obviously that powerful elf is the greatest of the Eldar, Fëanáro Curufinwë, the Spirit of Fire whose soul was too bright for his own good in the end (and Fëanor being my favorite character in Tolkien's Legendarium).

it was a spell in the form of a gift. it protected Gimli from the dwarven desire with gold and it's pursuit. though gold came readily to Gimli he never lusted after it or was a hoarder of it. he had a more treasured possession in the hair the elven lady gave him. his heart remained true to friendship and family because of his gift.

So when aragorn said it's time to hunt some orcs I was hyped then it ended. Had no idea 3 hours had passed. I was mad at first but then appreciated it later because of parts two and three. And only had to wait a year not 2-4 like most movies in trilogies. 😂

One cool background story is that the stunt rider who rode Arwen's white horse when she was being chased by the black riders (the Nazgûl), fell in love with the white horse and when filming was done, the horse was being auctioned but the stunt woman couldn't afford to buy it, and when Viggo Mortensen (Strider or Aragorn) found out, he bought the horse for her as a gift. The scenery that you admired so much is in New Zealand, where the three films were made, one after the other before the first one was released. You can visit the film set of the Shire in New Zealand today, because it was preserved as a tourist attraction.

When Frodo put on the ring, he entered the world of the Black Riders. They could see him better with the ring on than they ever could with it off. Their eyesight is poor, but they can see shadows cast the sun perfectly well. Their presence causes fear in all living things, and it takes an effort of will to overcome it. That fear is what drives Frodo to put on the ring. To hide from them. But the ring only makes him more visible to them.

And, on the subject of rings, Bilbo was already extremely wealthy. The elven-made rings that made up Mithril would definitely have made him Much wealthier in a millionaire versus billionaire kind of way. But, I doubt Bilbo would've done anything about it if he knew because the shirt was invaluable the way it was far more than as separate rings that could be sold off

Looking forward to the next one. A few fun facts: Pippin is actually the youngest character and the only one who is not considered an adult by his race. Which might explain his childlike behavior on occasion. Gimli explained why he wanted the hair in the book and it was to set it in crystal as a pledge of goodwill between the Mountain (dwarves) and the Wood (elves). Hobbit feet are like leather and as a result they don’t need to wear shoes. Also an actual dagger was thrown at Aragorn on accident. It was supposed to miss but Viggo had to deflect it for real because the actor playing the orc had trouble seeing through his mask.

One complaint some of the people who were big fans of the books, prior to the movies, was the huge hobbit feet. They are described as hairy and very tough in the books, but not these huge oversized feet that the movies depicted. As someone who loves watching people react to this trilogy I can’t count how many times I hear people have quite negative reactions to the hobbit feet, especially as they are shown in a lot of close-ups. So I know it is only a tiny detail, but I wish they had not gone with the design of the enormous hobbit feet.

"I wish the ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened." "So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us." Fun Fact: Despite playing a dwarf, John Rhys-Davies is the tallest of the actors who play members of the Fellowship. He is 6' 1" in height. "I made a promise, Mr Frodo. A promise. Don't you leave him Samwise Gamgee. And I don't mean to. I don't mean to." Fun Fact: Sir Christopher Lee read "The Lord Of The Rings" once a year until his death in 2015, and had done so since the year it was published. He was also the only member of the cast and crew ever to have met J.R.R. Tolkien. Thud Landing Fact: According to Sean Astin in the Extended DVD commentary, when Bilbo (Ian Holm) drops the Ring before leaving Hobbiton, the floor was magnetic to prevent the Ring from bouncing. This was done to demonstrate the importance and weight of the Ring. Stay In Character Fact: Gandalf's painful encounter with a ceiling beam in Bilbo's (Ian Holm) hobbit-hole was not in the script. Sir Ian McKellen banged his forehead against the beam accidentally. Sir Peter Jackson thought McKellen did a great job "acting through" the mistake, and kept it in. High And Dry Fact: Sean Astin's scene underwater didn't really happen. He was filmed in a dry studio, with fans making his cloak billow. The water effects were added in afterwards by computer. Rosetta Stone Fact: The Elvish language lines spoken in this movie are not just quotes from the book, they were derived from J.R.R. Tolkien's own limited dictionary of that language. Dialect coach Andrew Jack used recordings of Tolkien reading his books to guide the actors' and actresses' pronunciations. Adaptation Background Fact: Asking for and receiving a lock of hair isn't unusual. In the time before photos, men would often carry a lock of hair from their sweethearts when going off to war or extended trip. But the three golden hairs that Galadriel (Cate Blanchett) gifts Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) at his behest have far more significance than their just being very pure and innocent request, rather than all the gold or power or wisdom he could have asked for. Any fans who have read the Silmarillion will know that Feanor, one of the greatest elves, and most amazing crafters of the world had made a similar request of the golden lady thousands of years earlier. Feanor was so inspired by Galadriel's grace and beauty, that he wished to use strands of her hair in the making of his three Silmarils, the most precious gems ever created in Middle Earth. He begged her three times for a single strand of her hair, but even though she was young and inexperienced at this point, she looked into his soul and saw that his intentions were not fair and benevolent, but were driven by greed and a desire to possess something more precious than the other elves of the time. She, therefore, refused his request, causing much wrath and anguish, and he was forced to find other precious substances to infuse into his gems. So while Galadriel refused Feanor, she knew Gimli was a pure soul.

I can't quite remember as I watched that video a bit ago, but there was definitely some other ancestors in a section of the Took line that went right through his mom to him. I just can't remember the specifics, like which people it was that they intermarried with. I just remember they said it made Bilbo's family line special and that may be where the abnormal resistance came from.

It's better directed, better acted, better choreographed, and better in every way than the original Star Wars trilogy. Yet somehow, defying all logic and reason, Star Wars is still just the more important masterpiece and more important trilogy. LotR is real close, but just doesn't captivate people more than Star Wars does. The SWU is just bigger and more interesting.

Whether you react to them or not, after you complete the trilogy you might see if you like the also epic behind the scenes material they had in the box sets. This set of films and the crew who crafted them were together for years on this production. From the armor creators, set builders, costumers, and so on, this film is nearly as inspiring for its production as for the amazing finished product.

Scenes were regularly shot in isolated places. The actors and crew were brought by helicopter, but our Boromir was not seen. When the time came again, he would start a walking tour to the filming location hours in advance and already wearing his costume.

Gandalf and Saruman are members of an order of demi-gods sent to advise Middle Earth, specifically in regards to Sauron (fun fact; five wizards were sent, and Gandalf is the ONLY one who stayed true to the mission). Here's the thing - the upper-level gods don't believe in meddling. The wizards are ONLY supposed to be advising. So their powers have essentially been limited by the gods, to stop them from interfering too much. It didn't work. Three of the wizards immediately f--ked off to do other things, Saruman turned evil, and Gandalf does a whole LOT of meddling.
