I marched Blue Stars that year. I never really got a good chance to see them live because at most shows that we were at together they were either right after us or performing while we were at the busses changing out of our uniforms. I remember hesring the crowd shout "I AM SPARTACUS!" from the parking lot and couldn't believe how loud that was. Being on the field during awards, you could practically feel the crowd erupt when it was announced that the Blue Devils came in second meaning that Phantom had won. Added to an already emotional age-out night for me

Spartacus was one of those OMFG moments of DCI. The Phantom Regiment were certainly deserving of that win! When you take into consideration that drum corps members are between 14-21 years old, they audition and then they PAY to be in these corps, that is a sense of dedication and a half. They go from city to city all across the country through the summer competing against each other, and then it all comes to a fiery conclusion the first week of August for the World Championships. These people are serious stuff! :)

If you were competing at the top level in high school, you were likely doing BOA (Bands of America’s). Phantom is a drum Corp, not a band (notice there are no woodwinds). There are no high schools in DCI. Members are 16 to 21 and from many locales.

Coming from a white guy who went to a high school with a show-style band, I totally get the the shock of watching DCI for the first time. One interesting thing to keep in mind is that all of those performers are under 22. It's essentially a summer camp, where they'll spend about a weekend per month in the winter contracting members and then 90 days during the spring and summer learning the show and competing. There is another circuit now, DCI All-Age (formerly DCA), that only rehearses on weekends to accommodate for those who work full-time, which is something I am currently participating in. Personally, as much as I love the vibe of show-style bands, drum corps hits those spots of perfectionism and precision that tickles my brain a bit more. It's incredibly rewarding, especially as a performer. I highly recommend you check out some other shows.

Phantom is my most fav corps by far. I was the guy in the crowd at the end holding up the Phantom Regiment flag....this was a great era of DCI for sure...still old school but you could see it startign to evolve into what it has become. And. by far, the most challenging musical event there is. I am a percussion instructor who has had many students march DCI ,so I know the work ethic it takes to ge there!!!

I believe it was 2014 that DCI changed the rules to allow any brass instruments to be used in competition. Trombones were first used in 2014. You were correct to notice that there weren't any in this show. Not sure if you want all of the history of instrumentation in drum and bugle corps, but when DCI (Drum Corps International) started in 1972, they used bell-front instruments pitched in the key of G with one piston and rotor valve. I'm not sure if they were the same in the VFW and American Legion competition days. I welcome any corrections if I am wrong here. I believe in 1978 is when they changed the rules to using 2-valved bell front instruments also pitched in G. It could be a challenge for a brass arranger to write the music because there were certain notes that the instruments couldn't play without that 3rd valve. Then maybe in 1990 they changed the rules for three valve G keyed bell front instruments, then 2000 they allowed B-flat pitched instruments. Again, if I am missing or incorrect on any details, please feel free to correct.

Trombones weren’t allowed in DCI until about 2014, I think. Someone mentioned some corps from 2017 and 2018 that have trombones. Another one to check out for sure is 2014 Santa Clara Vanguard. They put trombones to very good use. I think they may have had 20+ trombones.

I'm glad you enjoyed it thank you for reacting to it! I marched after my high school graduation in 2007. When I was marched fees were about 1500, but now they're up to probably 5k maybe more. We had only 5 snare spots and at the beginning of the tryout season there were 125 people trying put for those 5 so it gets very competitive. I'm playing snare for Memphis Mass Band this year and this will be my first time getting to play in a SWAC style band so I'm excited but I absolutely love both styles equally.

I just wanted to say that this is not really a PWI, This organization is comprised of corps that have members who are extremely talented musicians from not only PWI's and High Schools from around the country, but also HBCUs. I also have known of a lot of HBCU students that have marched during the their fall (HBCUs)band season and participate in Drum Corps during the summer. I don't think many talk about it because they know how our peoples are. :) Glad you enjoyed the show!!! I didn't get to see this show live during this season, but heard it on audio after they beat my favorite corps who were undefeated the whole season and my jaw dropped.

Corps instrumentation consists of only brass and percussion. The front ensemble/pit is all your concert percussion that you can’t really march like marimba, bells, xylophone etc. Then you have your standard PWI Drumline. Some corps choose to not have a cymbal line. Then in the brass department you asked where the trombones are. Shows before the 2014 rule changes only feature face front valved instruments so you will only see trumpets, mellophones, euphoniums, and tubas. If you want a show that puts trombones to good use check out Cavaliers ‘17, Blue Devils ‘17, Carolina Crown ‘18, Bluecoats ‘19, and I think the Mandarins marched a line of bones in their 2018 show. Glad to see you dip your toes into the DCI KB. I love band no matter who’s holding the horn so it’s nice to see you branch out. Hope this clears this up. Much love

True Fans of Marching Bands can Definitely Appreciate this Version of The Marching Band! To many people think because HBCU Marching Bands are their First Love, they're not supposed to Respect, Enjoy, and Support this Version of Marching Bands. I Disagree! Quality Musicianship is just That! and A-1 Quality Precision Drills are ALWAYS Enjoyable! Song Selections is Usually The Biggest Difference between enjoying HBCU Style of Marching Bands and Corp Style. Or Any Other Style of Marching Bands. Im Still trying to figure out the beginning of this show tho, as i am writing this only Halfway thru the performance. At the VERY Start i wrote my VERY FIRST THOUGHT. "SLAVERY!" Not to say ANYTHING about this band being Racist, im just giving my first, earliest Raw Opinion at a glance to this Performance and the Story That It's Telling! Something to do with Slavery is a Guess?

It's based on the life of Spartacus from during the Roman era.....and how he was eventually killed etc. If you don't understand what it's based on its understandable to instantly think they may be portraying slavery that we (as people of color) are use to.....however there were Roman slaves too.....but yeah if you think of the Roman coliseum and the gladiators there, you'll have a better sense of where the show theme is.

You're right. These are professional athletes and musicians. The travesty is that this is the only professional sport (yes, it's a sport) where the athletes don't get paid. They, in fact, have to pay the organization to be involved. Imagine if professional baseball players had to pay the MLB to play the game. It's a damn shame. I speak as a former DCI member. I marched one season with the Blue Devils Drum and Bugle corp. I couldn't march the following seasons of my eligibility because my family was poor and we couldn't afford the 3 grand per season.

Check out the movie Spartacus and you will understand this fieldstone better. It is somewhat like Gladiator. The difference is that Spartacus was born and raised as a slave that was sold to a gladiator trainer, whereas in Gladiator, he was a general first that became a slave and then a gladiator.

Spartacus is based on a historical roman figure, Stars put out a pretty good mini-series about 10 years ago or so. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spartacus Also, love the Cobra Kai shirt!
