You missed the best thing about Archer. It have a program that can send three round burst that hit same place at the same time with different parabolic arcs and charge.

And they can get away before the three rounds hit the target. But if they do not aim to "shoot and scoot" it can shoot six shoots that land simultaniously (if I remember correctly). But if the do that they do not have the time to be on the move before the rounds hit, hence having increased exposure.

9 rounds per minute, average rate, 21 shells and 6 charges per shell standard load, 30 seconds from last shell fired to packed up and rolling, and from stop to firing. Full refill of one unit in 8 minutes, from a 100-reload ammo carrier using standard 20-foot containers, so any vehicle capable of carrying such can be used. Using an armored Volvo 6x6 dumper vehicle, allows for practically over-the-shell parts for easy of repair and/or replacement. High mobility, 65-70 kmh on road surfaces, and with a fuel tank allowing for 500 km range between refills. Large tires allowing for varying ground pressure, making it able to deal with a wide variety of surface conditions, from snow to mud to desert sand, much more so than a tracked vehicle, as well as 1 meter water depth when fording. The vehicle is mine-resistant, CBRN-protected, ballistically armored, fire-resistant and the windshields are resistant to shrapnel and medium-level firearms(7.62 Nato). With the combat compartment closed, the crew is protected and self-sufficient for up to 24 hours, and while the standard crew is a gunner, a unit commander and up to 2 operators, it is capable of being run and used by just the one crew member. For self-protection, the vehicle also have a remote-controlled weapons station on the driving compartment roof, capable of mounting a Minimi, FN MAG, Browning .50cal or a Mk. 19 40mm grenade machinegun, and is gyro-stabilized to allow for fire on target while moving. If something that cannot be fought with the weapon station threatens, it carries smoke launchers for cover while withdrawing. In every way a remarkable bit of kit.

I tried to fire the rounds from 155mm HW 77-A with an EXACTLY aimed Elvevation indicator. I was critiszised for slow firing. I had the precision in mind. In one case, the artillery piece was wagging, waveing, so I could not release the shot, for I did not want to fire stray shots out into the outness of the target. We had played with 10,5 cm a lot. Even live rounds. Hear them wobbling over your head, hahal. Tjoff-tjoff-tjoff, when they are wobbling in the air over your head, trying to fly straight. The peice might have had too low gas-pressure into the recoil-mechanism, or the grund was too springy. Slowness into the firing is better than dumb-shooting, for should you shoot 200 meters wrong, you might kill your own men.

No, others like USA are testing, Ukraine may have received a few (~6-12 units from Sweden). This is presently the best SPH (self propelled howitzer) in use until the Rheinmetall RCH-155 is produced for front line use. Fun fact: if testing proves true the RCH-155 is fully automatic load/fire as well like the Archer but it can apparently hit its targets while on the move. That is an order of magnitude more difficult in its precision and its survivability from counter battery fire. Edit: to reflect correct name of Rheinmetall future SPH.

It has been pretty common to measure artillery barrel lengths In calibres, at least on naval cannons - how many times the barrel diameter has to be multiplied to get the barrel length. That does mean it’s not a very useful measurement if you don’t know the barrel diameter, though.

It has been the standard for many years in the west to measure barrel lenght of artillery in calibers. So a 155mm L52 gun have a barrel lenght of 155mmx52. About 10 yaers ago the standard whas pretty much L39 on 155mm guns. Now its L52. You normaly write it:Caliber 155mm, Barrel lenght L52 (52 calibers).

Even when I was doing my military service back in the 90s, we had counterbattery radar explained to us. See, most artillery is ballistic: once the round is in the air, you can't control it any longer. So if you have radar that can get a fix on the projectile, you can easily calculate where it was launched from, and then use your own artillery to bomb that location. That's one of the Archer's strengths: it can deploy, launch a few rounds, and then GTFO before the other side can locate them. So by the time the counterbattery fire hits, they're long gone.

Russian artillery is for reducing cities to rubble with no building left standing, and for making craters in the fields until it looks like a moon landscape, as we can see clearly in footage from Ukraine. Western artillery is for taking out Russian artillery to keep this from happening. It doesn't take anywhere near as much artillery and ammo to do as the Russians have, but it does take some. It seems the West will need to start up an 155 mm ammo factory somewhere, or those Archers won't be able to do more than look impressive. God Jul!

It is designed for shoot and scoot, it can deply fire a few rounds and be out before the enemy has enough time to register that they are being bombarded. If you look in the video there is also a cut were it shows that it can be equipped with an anti air machine gun so its not completely defenseless then to top it all off it can shoot with long range projectiles upto 30+ miles making it very capable of staying behind the safety of its own frontlines making reactionary forces much hard to hit it. The only threat for this artillery would be long ranged air guided bombs which by time you have an aircraft in the sky and in position this artillery pieces has already done what it needed and moved along.
