Can The U.S. Afford Its Military Aid Promises?

U.S. defense spending and military aid costs are adding up. President Joe Biden signed a $95 billion U.S. military aid package in April 2024, allocating funding to Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan and the Indo-Pacific region. This is on top of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2024, which authorized military spending of a record $886 billion. U.S. military spending and aid packages bolster the American defense industry. “People think we’re sending a big check to Ukraine”, Gregory Hayes, CEO of RTX, told CNBC’s “Squawk Box”. “The fact is what most of that money will do will go to support American defense industries here in the U.S."
The five largest U.S. defense companies, Lockheed Martin, RTX, General Dynamics, Boeing and Northrop Grumman, had Department of Defense contracts totaling more than $118 billion in fiscal year 2022. “There’s a lot of foreign countries that get aid from the United States that’s predicated upon using that aid to buy U.S. hardware,” said Ken Herbert, aerospace and defense analyst at RBC Capital Markets, told CNBC.
Watch this video to learn more about where the U.S. sends military aid and personnel and how defense spending impacts the world at large.

    Unlikely. I don't know where you are but average spending per public school student is about $15,000 per student. That's $300,000 for a class of 20 students... If anything our schools are massively overfunded. How is that possible? For the same reason fertilizer runoff is bad for streams. Sure it helps plants to grow but they grow so much that the stream gets clogged up with algae. Money makes bureaucracy grow and when you have countless administrators, councilors, specialist, etc. you spend all your money there, meeting their needs and forget to actually hire teachers, pay them well, and provide basic supplies to the classroom. If teachers are losing needed teachers it's because the money went to something else, something that doesn't teach your kid to read and do basic math.

  • @4.0gpa44

    @4.0gpa44

    15 күн бұрын

    @@ThubanDraconisAgree totally with you except I don't think fertilizer should be regulated, but that's another topic. My school district spends around $22k per student per year, if I'm remembering correctly. Way, way too much money. Many Christian schools could easily do education for 4-10k per student without the liberal propaganda, and homeschooling is another great option as well.

So every 1 billion dollar aid means US companies get 800 million dollars which is used for paying salaries of workers who work in defence sector, the raw material costs etc. So basically with war in Europe, US is running its economy. US companies have already invested way too much in their defence supply chain. That means you simply cant shut it down. Millions of jobs will be lost. So its kind of that US need instability in world so they can sell what they make best i.e weapons.

    Why should it? I do believe that is an individual responsibility to build structures of survival. If money is spent overseas to prevent escalation in preventing a larger conflict involving NATO to occur than that is in the best interests. Because if a larger conflict occurs people will then say “Why didn’t we do more to stop it?” even if people who don’t want to learn new skills or gain knowledge of new industries to better their lives say that money could be spent on healthcare or education. Why rely on the government solely to make that happen? ChatGPT & various tools exists to make more money & expands ideas. That’s why I think if systems were put in place to improve healthcare or education many would just waste it because they themselves lack ambition.

    Defense aid does come back to America. Like the guy at the beginning mentioned, it's an 80% return on investment. That money trickles out from those 5 defense contractors. Still, 80% is terrible. Especially when that 20% loss results in death and destruction. Building a new railway or port might not have a positive return on investment either, but it'll benefit Americans for generations instead of a few quarters at Raytheon. Central planning doesn't work, it's fraught with fraud and misallocation of resources.

    Global unrest is generally bad for the US economy because we are so dependent on other parts of the world for goods. For example every time there is a conflict in the Middle East gasoline prices shoot up. America just needs to be more selective on where it “polices” The other option is that we become more self sufficient but again brings other challenges like price increases for goods because wages in America are higher. So imagine your Nikes go from $175 a pair to $300 a pair because we decided to move manufacturing back. How many people can afford $300 sneakers?

    The world has already started to slowly move away from using USD currency for international trade and diversifying their foreign currency reserves. Should the world use the USD less there will be massive problem for the United States. Unlike other countries that have to pay back debts in foreign currency even to their own people. The US pays back debt by simply printing more without the value of currency turning into toilet paper.
