ARCHER Shoot and Scoot

Ғылым және технология

The modern battlefield is characterized by a multitude of threats and challenges. In order to improve survivability, combat units must be able to work together effectively. The tasks of the artillery may include preparation fire over long distances, suppressing fire, and being able to follow fast-moving ground forces for several days. Fast emplacement and displacement is crucial for delivering fire support when needed, as well as avoiding counter-battery fire. BAE Systems' Archer needs less than 30 seconds from the time the operators receive a call for fire, to stop the vehicle, position for action, and fire the first round. Less than 30 seconds after the mission is accomplished, Archer is on the move again. Archer can get into place, fire six rounds, displace, and move 500m in less than two minutes, while the crew remains in an armored cabin.
The combination of Archer’s features sets it apart from other artillery systems: The superior range; high rate of fire; rapid emplacement and displacement; mobility; crew work environment; and safety, to name a few. Parts of the Archer capabilities may feature in other systems out there, but bring together the full portfolio of capabilities to the warfighter in one single system the way Archer does.

    That's where you get it wrong. Artillery radar will detect incoming munitions, however with the speed of this weapon system (deploying e t c), by the time you have fired on the suspected area the Archer is gone. TL;DR The enemy will locate the possible firing position but they relocate before they are hit by counter-artillery. There is a difference.

    whats even more impressive is that the Archer system has a special firing mode in which it fires consecutive rounds in decreasing angles of inclination while adjusting the propellant load, causing up to 4-5 shells to impact almost simultaneously in the single target area. Crazy hail of death that is

    True. The new Indian AMAGS (ATAGS MGS) is also capable of doing the same thing. Its called Multiple Round Simultaneous Impact (MRSI). Now imagine this: a single Artillery Regiment has around 18 of these howitzers. If they all fire a 5-round MRSI simulatenously, imagine the effect on the target end:- One second everything is fine. Next second 90 155mm H.E. shells explode simultaneously around you. And this capability will soon be available to almost every Brigade Commander in the Himalayas. Chinese soldiers gonna' $hit their pants.

Feeling a little nostalgic I had just recently reinstalled and have been playing Tom Clancy's: Endwar again, where most of the combat vehicles presented are completely fictional but feature or showcase weapon systems or design concepts that were or are currently still in development. This is due to the near-future setting (at the time of it's release) of a third world war breaking out between the U.S., the Russian Federation as well as the "European Commonwealth" in the year 2020. The Archer is the artillery unit deployed by the European Commonwealth military, the so-called "Enforcer Corps."

But another important feature is the crew protection and the fact that you can do what you saw in the video with only 2 people. Noone needs to leave the cockpit. Everything is automated. 1 driver and 1 operator is all it takes, even though 3-4 crew is standard. In theory this mashine could be handled by 1 standalone guy, if he moves between the drivers seat and the firing controls. (Again without leaving the protection of the cockpit) This would of course increase the time between parking --> firing --> leaving. But it isn't impossible.

    What is NOT shown is the additional vehicles needed for complete effectiveness. 1- 3 other archers to complete their team. 2- 2 fuel trucks 3- 3 ammo trucks 4- communications vehicle (if needed) In total this system, though decent on its own. would be part of a 10-vehicle unit. One that you don't want to be facing off against.

  • @tylerjuarez9817

    @tylerjuarez9817

    Also not shown is the Fires Direction Channel team which in and of itself needs its own cluster of vehicles and logistics behind it, and you need forward observers (which if they're mounted as dedicated forward observers or integrated with infantry or cavalry require MORE vehicles and logistics) to get close enough to place the shot and watch the splash to make sure the round actually made it to the target. This is still an absolutely magnificent and terrifying system however. Just have to make sure the supporting logistics elements are updated and kept up to speed too, which often in Western militaries just blatantly are not.

    The biggest weakness, or rather the best counter to artillery is a counter battery, using sensors or knowledge to triangulate where the artillery shot from and shoot back. And that is because most artillery platforms over a certain calibre are stationary and take minutes or longer to shift. This platform can be moving outside counter battery range before the enemy has even been hit by the barrage. Insane.

    Super cool. Dunno if this is a feature, but some sort of water hose that could spray a little water around the artillery, making the dust lay on the ground. rather then be blasted around from the shock. making it even harder to identify where it were shooting . also, if they were to Move-Shoot-Move-Shoot repeat. a drone could then see the first big dust cloud. looking after the second not so big, calculate where the next one could be and have airsupport ready.

    I think if anyone was close enough to see the dust cloud, they'd be able to hear the blast

    I'm curious as to how often one scoots. (Your firefinder spots them, they scoot, their aistyonok finds you, you scoot, etc...)

    ...and that’s about the time you may stay at any location - before the enemy hits you directly. Good they are behind armour!!
