Surface Advection - Content Repository Tutorials 2019

Surface Advection
In this tutorial, we'll recreate the Surface Advection scene from INSYDIUM's FMX 2018 trailer.
Techniques we'll work through include:..
* Creating a shockwave using ExplosiaFX.
* Sticking particles to a surface and aligning them correctly.
* Using ExplosiaFX to advect the rotation of particles.
* Generating geometry from the particle simulation for use with the Standard or Physical renderer.
* Using the Cycles 4D instance tag.
* Setting up Scene lighting.
* Using the Bevel Node.
This video was recorded on a computer with the following specs: Processor: i7-7820X CPU @ 3.60GHz, 8 Core Graphics Card: 2 x Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080Ti RAM: 64.0 GB

    Hey Bob! Brilliant man. Your tutorials are spot on and just great to follow. After exploring this method a little more. I have one question. If I were to change the scale of the cubes as you did within Cycles. Is there another alternate way to do so. I thought it would be in the Advected Emitter or the Generator, but no avail. Any solutions? Appreciate the insight.

    Hi Bob, excellent tut! One question, with velocity at 100% in explosia, particles seem to flicker a lot as i rendered em (rotate too much and too fast). I tried using drag but had no effect. I had to decrease velocity at 10% or so, but im not sure what im missing this way. Any thoughts? thanks

    Hi, I'm trying to cache that sim in order to use it in some other scenes. That means I need to copy and paste the simulation in a new scene, change scale and position of it and parent it to another object. I haven't been successful in caching and being able to do that so far because when I scale it down it's messing up, so if anyone can help me out that would be awesome. Thanks!

    Once again, really good stuff and a great technique. Thank you. However, it's troubling that you'd just ignore the obvious movement to the cubes on the far edges that's happening well before the advection wave hits them. Seems to me that's the first thing a creative director would ask us to fix before sending this shot along. What would a person need to add to keep the all cubes perfectly still (pointing up) until the wave actually hits them? Again, thanks for all you bring. :)

    Brilliant tutorial Bob, sadly in the newest version of XP the explosia doesn't react the same as your and the explosion just sinks instead of rises, even if i add a value to the temp it falls under gravity. Since upgrading i've not been able to get explosia to work properly at all.

    I've figured it out, and you have to use the initial emitter for that (the one that's driving the Explosia fx) I'm using redshift and here's what I did: 1. Put a redshift tag onto the emitter itself 2. Turn on the particle setting and choose optimised spheres. 3. Change the colour of the display particles to a rainbow gradient (which you should be able to see in your viewport once you've changed it) 4. Create a redshift particle material 5. Put the material directly onto the emitter. 6. Go into the redshift shader graph of the particle material and pipe the same node that's in the diffuse channel into the emmision channel as well. If you're not using redshift, then the other render engines should have similar workflows with particle instances etc. Hopefully this helps some people!

    Amazing amazing amazing, I am not regretting my decision to buy XP and Cy4D one bit. My issue with this is that I was unable to create an xpExplosia sim that started off "calm" before the shockwave does its thing, as soon as the sim starts the whole thing jumps into a slightly haphazard default position and is still moving around a bit (ie the particles are not perfectly even or symmetrical in orientation) before the shockwave hits it... wondering how to control the sim like this, how to achieve a "calmer" beginning if that makes any sense?
