Superbooth 20HE: UDO Audio Remote Workshop Tour
Ғылым және технология
UDO Super 6 is coming near to its release date; we were happy to hook up with designer George Hearn remotely as part of our Superbooth Home Edition coverage. As UDO are obviously still stuck back in the UK as well they were kind enough to give us a remote walkthrough or their offices and workshop.
The Super 6 is almost shipping now, so we’re excited to see them start going out into the wild. If you’re interested in getting hold of one then you can still pre order them!

This man may well be the next Bob Moog, Tom Oberheim or Dave Smith. What craftmanship and passion. I wish him all the very best, even more so in these trying times for any small business.

I'm thinking to buy one of his synths simply to support him! ;-)
50 years of playing keyboards and this is the first time I had the opportunity to go behind the scene and see a passionate engineer in their workplace. Thank you Nick and George for this video (and all that helped behind the scene on the video :)

Sounds like a well tempered orchestra evolving whilst modulating and planetary morphing. 2 years later and my curiosity is getting the better of me now that Gazz bought one. I guess one must pay to play cause it’s not cheap for sure. Even the desktop.
And for all you guys wondering , the actual synths enclosure are engineered/ made by a german company called rueffel , who also did the virus , steinberg audio interfaces , waldorf quantum , sonic core xite one , radikal technologies accelerator etcc... Top quality assembly

Very important info, thank you!
"So yeah, when I was 18 I just whacked together a polysynth based on Curtis chips, but it's all discrete." Absolute madman! Wow!
Just bought one today and taking delivery of it tomorrow. As in all synths I own, I do my research and understand the history of the company and how a synth was born. This solidified my purchase. Reminds me of Dave Smith and his passion for synths. I’m in full support of UDO and can’t wait to see what the future holds. Hopefully, in a few decades, this first iteration of this synth will be a legend, and I’ll own one.
Wow! A bit over halfway through this and I'm blown away by this video. I wanted a super six prior to this but now I'm for sure going to get one. This guy's passion for his craft just comes through so genuinely, and it shows in the look and sound of his creations. Fantastic!
Good stuff! Thanks all😁🙌
Nick is a such a passionate guy, and super 6 is a fantastic piece of engineering.
Got my Super 6 yesterday. Such a lovely machine. I can't wait to really get to know that beast.
Every time I hear this synth, I want it more. My love for this project is a fever pitch at this point. George is the MAN.
my god what a demo. This man can play! He made me rethink the way synths can be played.
I was lucky enough to meet George at a BBQ as I also live in Bristol. I have had a Super 6 for testing since October and for those who have been waiting desperately for one, I can confirm it is worth the wait! It really is wonderful to play and create sounds on, plus it sounds great. The binaural feature is really nice and unique.
anyone else's eyes drawn by the big SOMA case behind Nick? George's synths sound cool.
I am in awe of those 3 synths that he only made ONE of.
Fascinating guy and superb design on the Super 6.
this video tour is absolutely extraordinary!
I think this is my favourite pad sound (grey synth) I’ve ever made but I didn’t save it.. so foolish!
Congratulations Jorge. How good the end sounds and how much passion in everything you do!This is how the synth sounds, which I will soon receive. I congratulate you and wish you all the best, Jorge.
This is a great video.it really shows that george has been in the synth design game for a while and that udo may just be here for the long haul.the super 6 is worth the price and this video shows that this is a true labor of love for george.
Very cool to see and even hear George's past efforts! The Super 6 sounds stunning, as in every demo. This demo is particularly nice, and brings to mind the opening of Oxygene. Like George said, I can't wait to see what others do with this instrument (even though George is an excellent demo player) - this just sounds like something genuinely fresh, new, and capable. The idea of oversampling at 25 MHz, pushing all digital artifacts and aliasing away and leaving a more-than-pristine signal, is just lovely, and seems to ooze through every sound the Super 6 makes, especially when pushed (and the difference is expected to be audible). I also really like the philosophy behind the binaural signal path - since hearing about it, I've been programming my own synthesizer patches in a different way (for example, panning one osc hard L and the other hard R and modulating them similarly but differently). This seems like a company full of fresh ideas and the talent and diligence required to execute them.

The FPGA approach is quite common now, it's again something you won't be seeing in VSTs, hardware wins again :)

@@6581punk I may have to agree with you there. I've owned a few hardware synths, but have switched to a fully ITB setup in recent years. The best emulations of classic analog synths are so good now, that I'm personally happy to just use the software. However, these new hybrid FPGA/analog synths (Super 6, Novation Summit, etc.) seem to bring something genuinely new. I don't think any VST will be able to oversample audio to tens of MHz in realtime anytime soon (although to be honest I don't know how to do a good back-of-the-envelope calculation here, so I really don't know). At any rate, the combination of the powerful FPGA, analog filter/amp, binaural design, and playability/build quality makes the Super 6 highly desirable. I've been planning to start learning to play the keyboard this year. It may just have to be this one!
Those one-offs are really beautiful and the component quality in the Super 6 looks great. Looking forward to having one some day.
Never wanted to spend this sort of money on synth before but every time I hear the S6 I hear something I haven't before., It's going to be hard to resist.

Awesome work, George! I wish you the best in 2021!
THIS is the sound and especially playablility that I was looking for for so long!!! Absolutely brilliant. Ordered mine... Thomann Germany says end of may, can't wait!
Fantastic video gents - what an amazing company and product. Been in love with this synth since I first played with it at Synthfest, can't wait to get my hands on one of my own. Wish UDO all the luck in the world and can't wait to see what you guys come up with next !
Thank you so much, definitely a highlight of my week. Those prototypes sound lovely. 🤤🤤🤤
future classic in the making.. these are amazing looking (and sounding) synths
Beautiful soundscape and feel towards the end!
Incredible stuff here... definitely something special going on with UDO
Well done George for designing a great sounding synth. Prompt delivery of a reliable machine must be an even greater challenge. Good luck to all involved.
Awesome. Already got my preorder in. Can’t wait til I’m finally able to create on it!
Great sounds at the end!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Stay strong George! Sorry your brand new market emergence is experiencing problems at this uncertain time. Keep the faith and you guys will kill it. It sounds stellar, and I hope to have one soon.. Cheers!
I have some of your old oscillator modules, all PCB’ed up and calibrated, I didn’t get around to finishing the project. Super 6 sounds like it should be a new Orchestral instrument standard, like a modern-day Ondes Martinot. Really really classy. Every success George. I’ll come and say Hello one day.
Great tour! George is a fantastic individual.
Best superbooth vid for me so far :-)
Excellent... Thank you and well done
Nice guy, nice philosophy and nice instrument! 👍🏼
Oh gooooooood! The wait is killing me! It would be great he he signed the first batches inside or something as a little easter egg. He should be proud of what he has done!
i already know I'm going to love this synth when it arrives. It certainly makes sounds I've never heard on a fully self contained unit. It would be great if they did a sort of Yamaha DX1 trick. Two super six synths with extra controls, perhaps a function assign matrix with LED's signalling enabled function, an 88note Hammer Action, Poly Aftertouch Keybed, extra split and layering function. I'd take a £10000 finance out for one of those also :)
OMG UDO is incredible!
Great interview
Great as always Nick, and George’s demo at the end sublime. The sound from the grey one wow! I do hope that’s gonna be a preset? I definitely need one, I promised myself that I wasn’t gonna buy anything for a while but Come on, awesome.
breathtaking instrument and performance at the end
Wow ! Now I want one :). Fantastic performance in the end. It has a certain something.
This synth just sounds amazing
Exquisite
George is AWESOME looking FWD to SUPER 6 UDO THANKS!
The F1 of modern analog synthesizers, and the guy to do it right. Amazing!
wasnt surprised to see a modal in there, got my 001 and maybe one day this baby if i can get the cash togther. something about Bristol and synths, magical. thank you for what you bring to synths George.
Did he say 12 filters at once, analog filters? Can someone confirm that? Silky and lush sound without FX, woah. When a synthesizer has its own unique sound and can’t seem to be easily replicated, You know it’s a classic synth. Well this one has it, yes it is pricey to the standard but it’s being made in Germany. I’m saving for one even if it takes me a year to pay it off. Is cheaper than therapy and gives me a bigger smile 😃
Bringing new meaning to the phrase 'attention to detail'. If I had the bread I'd get one just based on the fact that this guy designed & built it - it's obvious a LOT of thought/effort/expertise has gone into it. Maybe one day...
4:06 proper head scratch
Very enjoyable tour and demo. Thanks for the video SS! My hats off to anyone who can buy one and use it well.
I was excited about the SUPER 6, but now I'm more excited to know more about the earlier analog synths!
Great passionate guy. Really exciting new synthesizer, congratulations to UDO..! P.s THIS is the real deal, true passionate real people and no stupid trolling marketing BS. (Just my opinion. But cant help notice the big difference)
Well that was a bit special at the end. Very nice. Really emphasises that this board is designed to inspire creativity on the fly for live synth playing. I really need to make some space to pair this with my 002. Lush.
Really enjoyed that, what a smart guy. Btw, home made DIY synths should always be called 'Folly Synths' :-)

He's been building since synths since 28. Amasing! What school courses or major did he take to learn to build one?
Fabulous guy with a fabulous synth, it sounds every bit as lovely there as it did at Synthfest last year! Wonderful performance at the end, makes me want one all the more..... pipe dreams!
As you can see to the left bottom side at 2:00 mark. The secret and force behind UDO
I will live in ragged clothes, take a shower bi weekly and sleep in an enclosed trailer to own this Super 6.
Now you need 2 of these?? Let me rub my 2 coins and see what happen. Lovely, just lovely sounding synth.
What’s better than a Super 6? Two Super 6s!
I still want one, but I REALLY REALLY want to hear it do bass. I think George is partial to a lot of pad sounds and I truly want to hear if it can do the bass and lead stuff as well.
Sweeeeeet

this just in- burglars break into Bristol tech shop and steal nothing. A prototype keyboard had apparently been played for most of the night and some tea was made. a thank you note was found next to the instrument and an empty cup.

If an unknown corona virus dances through the air , is it then an UDO ?
I hope this doesn't offend anyone, but I think the idea of demonstrating instruments in a convention/trade show setting should be eliminated altogether. In such a crazy environment, there is no way that we could appreciate the hard-work and the history of the amazing people behind these products anywhere near the degree that this video has just provided. You can barely hear anything in those environments, and people always make each other sick at them. And then, there's the cost that anyone involved has to go to... When hard-working people spend thousands on a product, they want to feel that they are buying into more than a bunch of circuits and transistors. I love the feeling of knowing that my money goes to support the families behind these products. It was a real treat to see the environment in which these synths are created and to know that it's not a giant factory run by robots. You can clearly see that George is passionate about his work and believes in his product. Also, think about the money that could be saved and reinvested back into the product and the families that create them if they didn't have to dedicate huge budgets every year to demonstrating at all of these trade shows, year after year. I think people will begin to realize that trade shows are an outdated, expensive and environmentally damaging way to bring new products to the market.

You can say the same about any show. But how else are you going to be able to actually play around with the hardware before making what may be a very expensive purchase? I know this doesn't apply to every show as many are trade only. But others are more open.

It’s more than just a show to display and push products to consumers. A lot of business deals and networking occurs at these trade shows as well.
It's not the 2500 Euro that keeps me from ordering one. It's the bill of the divorce lawyer...
