Superbike Racer Shane Shakey Byrne Life in Cars, Crashes and Bikes - part 1

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Welcome to a well overdue Late Brake Show (Non-Tour) ‘Idol Chat’, where we rope an Idol of Jonny’s and/or an Idol to many, for a sit down chat in our tatty brown leather chairs.
For this next ‘Idol Chat’ - of which there are 2 parts, this is just Part 1 - we picked the windiest week of 2022, to drag the tatty chairs down to Kent and meet a multiple motorcycle race champion.
The world of cars and bikes is often segregated and tribal, but we believe there's a lot of car folks - like us - who appreciate bikes/bike tech/bike racing/bike history, even if we don't ride much/at all.
Cue Shane Byrne. Six time British Superbike Champion Shane Byrne. Incessant vehicle cleaner. Astonishing death avoider and '80s Ford thrasher, Shane Byrne. An inexplicably talented rider and a constant smiler.
In Part 2 Shane shows us around his garage, packed full of amazing 2-wheeled heroes.

I used to love the "Fast Bike" videos in the late 90's. Inspirational and good memories of attempting to re-create! I bought a 916 off the back of "Fast Bikes". Shakey and the lads hooning in the South of France was brilliant.

I love your interviews. The only reason you can achieve the fantastic outcomes is because you have real knowledge combined with a genuine love of the topics being discussed. There's no fakery involved. The plain honesty of the notebook in hand with the (small number of) facts or questions that can't be kept in mind just shows this is not done through smoke and mirrors. Excellent, excellent, excellent.

Great chat as always! Shakey is a lovely guy. Many moons ago, I worked at a BMW dealer, and my boss being a bike fan managed to persuade Shane to buy an M3 CSL. Now at the time, if you had a race license, you could order it with the limiter removed. However, at the time, BMW didn't recognize a Bike race license as valid! After many emails and an ECU returned to Germany, we made it happen. Apparently he didn't keep it long and replaced it with a Noble as it wasn't 'raw enough'! Keep it up Jonny

Interviews aren't really his scene, but you'd have a great time talking to Guy Martin if you could get him. Great stories, resolutely grounded bloke still despite being a household name, and as well as the bikes you could bond over his rod-rodded 788hp Volvo.

Great interview ,uncanny cos my name is Shane , was adopted at 6 months old ,my mother who brought me up didn’t drive or inspire me , and I was riding Honda 90s , down the field and council wasteland etc as a 13 yr old , was out at 12 midnight the night before my provisional at 16 , had loads of cars bikes , been banned 4 times , yrs ago , then owned most big bikes , zx10 , bus’s a etc etc , been round the tt circuit at 180 in places with the misses on the back , worked at Mallory park , for 4 yrs , and 20 yrs ago met shakey at the bike show N E C , he signed my bike jacket ,,, still own and wear it , in the summer months madness cheers shaneweightman uk 🇬🇧

I totally understand about the ‘struggle to compute’. About 5 years ago I rode a properly fast Benelli and was having a bit of sensory overload. I would seemingly only blip the throttle and BOOM next corner, brake, downshift, throttle out and BOOM, next corner all on public roads. Yikes! Too much for this old man. Great interview!

Very interesting to hear the Shakey vs Shane discussion. A great way of rationalising the situation and coming back from the crash. Great chat!

Fantastic excellent episode so good to see Shakey he would still be BSB champion if he had not had that horrific accident.I wish him all the best in the future.
