Everything you didn't know about BBC Radio 1 Greg James ' love for cars. Welcome to a very special Idol Chat interview on The Late Brake Show with BBC Radio 1 breakfast's Greg James. Greg and Jonny Smith have been friends for a while, but when Greg wanted to find and buy his dream car, Jonny offered to help. The car? A E34 M5 BMW, just like the car seen in Ronin. The ultimate '90s super saloon? Greg reckons so.

Greg and Jonny spent the afternoon driving his BMW and talking about the Radio One DJ's secret obsession with cars throughout his life - often appreciating the mundane and normal cars during his childhood. Greg doesn't do interviewsRadio 1's Greg James - My Secret Love of Cars (and why I bought a '90s BMW M5) very often, so we want to say a huge thank you for agreeing to make this. Spot on Greg is so humble and selfless too. I have listened to him since when Fen cotton,Reggie Yates and Chris Moyles were still on radio 1 they used to Mock Greg James there was a time when Reggie Yates was mocking him on BBC three Big weekend but what I admire is the fact that Greg is so humble and he just does things in a selfless manner . Now Yates is history but Greg is the Head of BBC BIG WEEKEND now.

My respect for Greg has just gone up further than it already was. I love him on the radio and I’m a massive petrol head who’s also into retro German cars. My dad had an e34 528i when I was in my teens. My first car in 2006 was an e36 318is saloon which were quite rare. And I totally agree with you that bmw know how to make a 6 pot! What a remarkably candid and thoughtful man Greg is. Although I am a "youth" I don't tune in to Radio 1 due to the music, however, I would listen to him all day. There is something refreshingly relatable about him and I can tell how humble he his. As far as I am concerned, it is not boasting if it is something you are genuinely passionate about, and I know that as a Renault Safrane enjoyer, he is a man of exceptional taste. Did you tell him about the Irmscher-tuned Renault Safrance BiTurbo? That would be worth a French collection caper Really touching Film Jonny, Greg is a wonderful chap and I am glad classic cars have really made a difference in his life, that's what they are about.

I started a new job as a service engineer on the day the first Covid lockdown was announced (23rd March 2020). Due to a large amount of employees being furloughed and me being a new starter, I was covering many areas/regions across the North of the UK, driving several hours a day. Especially Greg but all of the Radio 1 day time presenters were a constant in my life from Monday-Friday for the best part of 2 and a half years through the majority of all the lockdowns. As like many others, I suffered through some hardships during the lockdowns and it was difficult day in, day out, listening to awful news on the radio about what covid was doing to the world and it got me quite down. Greg always had a knack of keeping my spirits up with his ridiculousness and always seemed positive despite what was going on. I never realised how much of a car nerd he was so to find that out makes me appreciate him all that more. Don’t know if you’ll ever see this Greg but you’re a top bloke and keep being you and can’t wait to see what whacky stuff you’ll be bringing to the radio tomorrow! That was such an uplifting video. Didn't really know or care about Greg. How wrong was I. He loves everything I do and all his stories ring true with me. Big love, and the M5 is gorgeous x

Cars and Radio 1, part of my youth. I'll never forget driving around north Wales in the early 00s during the summer holidays with my mom and dad. Listening to the brilliant Mark & Lard on Radio 1 in the afternoon.

Great video, e34 m5 was always my favorite. Interesting it's a 94 with the slim grill. Looks very clean!!

That was a really great watch Jonny, thanks, ..very sweet m5, Greg should have kept the beautiful Merc though! Quite insightful thoughts with his enjoyment of 'just' driving. Some quality chuckling to be had and a blossoming bromance was evident😊 I did laugh about the espace as I've got a glorious early Fiat Ulysse (ev1) that I like to refer to as a kidnappers or indeed a murderer's bus with its sliding doors and space without realising it was actually a potential selling point😀 also just picked up on the Ronin headlight flashes in the beginning montage on my second watch! Great car chase.👍

This is the most entertaining, watchable and honest car vid In ages. Bit of a car bromance here I think! A stunning M5 to boot!

That was brilliant! Greg seems to be the type of guy who could just sit and talk about any old car related stuff, without it needing to be about the latest Ferrari etc. Fantastic work as always Jonny!

As an American I’ve never heard of Mr. James, but I can see why he is a popular radio host. Very bright, very genuine, and just the right amount of nerdy car guy.
