But what's the alternative? It's not like people are keeping some secret reservoir of cheap cars for members of the secret cheap car club to occasionally buy from. I've been driving Monteros since the beginning of the 90s and they were always considered trash trucks by everyone until very recently, then they disappeared from the wrecking yards magically over about a 2-3 year period as all the ones owned by careless people finally quit working and all the rest are owned by responsible owners who take care of them and the price of a used one is pretty high these days. Same thing for the cars on this list... putting them in the hands of people who are willing to spend some money might save a few from the scrapyard for another few years.

Intake/Exhaust valves, timing issues, transmissions, electronics, etc. Most of these are pretty solid options but I'd have a hard time recommending specifically the 11th gen F150 to anyone shopping on a budget. Some are problem free, but just as many come with huge repair bills and neglected maintenance.

Just a little correction on the Cedric/Gloria's... You can get most engine and transmission parts in the US if your willing to be smart and cross reference part numbers. I have a 93 Gloria (same car as the Cedrid) and have rebuilt my transmission, did water pump, timing belt, tune up, valve cover gaskets, termostat, and the only part I have to get from japan was the intake gaskets. I've redone the suspension to lower it. (VIP build) and all those parts are US sold. Everything comes from Q45's, 240's, Maximas, or 300zx's. Great car and easy to maintain.

There's a 2016 listed at $22k. I actually love these cars, I used to own a V6 manual coupe. Amazing cars. But under $10k is wildly unrealistic. Thats the price range for 4 cylinder coupes.

Aftermarket support is huge and you can definitely daily it because of the size. I pulled mine just under 10k with the engine swap + parts. TDi Touareg will literally bleed you dry in terms of parts. That air suspension costs an arm and a leg to fix. The engine parts are a kings ransom these days cause they’re not easy to come by and salvage stuff is all but gone, having been picked over years ago. Tech heavy and rare cars from a decade plus ago are not a good idea cause with no real factory support your at the mercy of whatever someone wants to charge

I feel like the 2002-2006 R53 Mini Cooper S is worth a mention. 2-door hot hatch with phenomenal handling, forged engine internals from the factory, and an eaton supercharger is a recipe for a lot of fun. A healthy aftermarket and enthusiast community also makes these a great platform for modification and with the right knowledge and mods, they can be made to be very reliable.

The reliability issues that the 2002-2006 1st-gen cars had came from auxiliary items that are easily fixed with aftermarket parts or mods without destroying your wallet. The 2007+ 2nd-gen Mini's with the N-series Prince engines, though? Absolute junk. Avoid at all costs. Also, half of the cars in this video are maintenance nightmares.

I mean the only cars on the list that might be any money to maintain would be the BMW, Volvo and the Cedric, and that’s only due to part’s availability. Miata, and civic are bulletproof cars, always were always will be, the mustang and F150 are so common you could probably start digging in your back yard and find a spare motor to drop in, really cheap pars, easy to work on and fairly under stressed. The Cadillac, while the electrics might play funny buggers, is a suburban underneath which is a really tough little truck

The e82 platform really is a great car. I used to own a manual 120i and it was quite fast for a 2l and also nible in the corners even in its stock form. Just a all around blast to drive but you have to keep in mind that they come with a host of electrical problems that can sometimes be quite tricky to solve. Its nothing that will have you stranded on the side of the road but for example my lights and windows didnt work most of the time

Check your ground strap. A bad ground can cause weird electrical issues...also if you swap halogens for LEDs, you will trigger codes because the resistance is LEDs is so low the car thinks there's no light there.

Scored me a 5spd 2008 Mazda3 Hatch with the 2.3L for just a bit under 4k a few months ago! Its a dream and its been a blast learning manual. Bought it with about 62k miles, almost at 67k now and I couldn't be happier! Def got a steal of a deal! An NC would have been fun, but the hatch is hard to beat! Cheers to all the shoppers out there and best of luck!

you're better off buying anything in that price range with a proper title then some wrecked piece of shit that's rebuilt Yes I'm sure someone will go off and say "uh my car is rebuilt and it's fine" well I'm glad, yes you can get good cars that are rebuilt. 90% of the time they aren't though and you're taking a massive financial risk on unknowns if you don't know the vehicle history or other info.

@@rj6110 that really depends on what totaled the car. A slow collision with airbags going off will total most cars but if you know what you’re doing the repairs could be minimal. All in all I believe rebuilds can be solid buys but only if you know what you’re doing.

Touch screen, push to start, bluetooth, traffic sensors, backup camera, and automated cruise control, fake carbon fiber trim It isn’t fast but I’ve already seen rental companies and rideshare drivers with over 180k and zero complaints Look them up seriously a clean looking car for the price with alloy rims and color matching side mirrors
