Suicide: Quelling the Perfect Storm | Chris Caulkins | TEDxMahtomedi

In his TEDxMahtomedi presentation, “Suicide: Quelling the Perfect Storm”, Chris discusses the interdisciplinary nature of the many potential causes of suicide. With suicide as the 10th leading cause of death for all age groups in the U.S. and increasing, a formal academic program of study in suicidology is needed to better understand these causes and develop effective preventative measures.
Chris Caulkins is program director and faculty for the Century College EMS program, works part-time as a paramedic, and is also a researcher for Sumrith Solutions, a social science consulting firm. He is certified as a psychological autopsy investigator and has co-founded and co-facilitates two peer support groups for those bereaved by suicide. Chris is currently working on a doctorate; his dissertation preparation centers on suicide among college students and the protective (and detrimental) effects of education. The driving force behind Chris’ need to understand suicide were the deaths of his wife and brother - both by suicide.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Would love to see an update from him. The withholding of pain medication is currently devastating the disabled. Every moment of every day crying for death.

You are the only person I know who says suicide rather than committed suicide. I've always used that term because suicide in indeed not a crime. I also don't believe it's a fault or unforgivable. There are times when there are no new avenues to take to feel better.i also want to tell people there are no "typical" signs nor are there suicide letters. Every suicide is as individual as the person who suicides.

Very informative. Yes, the stigma holds tight and you do lose (some) credibility after an attempt. In effect you have a record of a kind. The great trajedy is human beings have such a destructive/self-destructive capacity at all. As in most things, prevention is (much) better than cure. We could start with (trying to,) treat each other better. And... good luck with that...

Thank you Chris...sounds like you really do understand while so many think they do. Suicide is still very stigmatized and no one will openly talk about it. How can we solve something we can't openly discuss? Do you realize how your life can be ruined by an attempt? used against you in a court of law or lose your children, etc......I know, I've been dealing with this all my life and all there is, is someone shaming me.

THANK YOU for posting! As a four-time familial suicide survivor (husband at 19, mother at 48, 2nd husband 28, & cousin age 21. Father died at 54, in my arms, due to alcoholism), I understand the great pain and stigma associated with the loss of a loved one by suicide. I didn't just "Survive," I found a way to "Thrive."' Need a friend? -@ Teardrops That Tango. ✞ Friendz; You are strong. You are beautiful. When it feels like the rest of the world is unreachable, help is out there. When the rest of the world feels like too much to handle, there is always someone or something that can help you take control of your thoughts, your actions, and your mental health. What you need to remember in times like these, is that you are never alone.

Not illegal, but the state has total right to punish you by locking you up on a legal hold until they institution believes you're "stable" enough to be released.
