That just saved me a bunch of money. I was about to order a replacement pump. I got about 2 mins into the video and realized my issue wasn't the pump, but the $1 O ring. Took longer to go to the parts store and back then to replace the O ring. My power steering pump went from a screaming banshee to quiet as a mouse. I can even parallel park again. Thanks for the help.

I also had constantly noisy/juddery power steering. Tried the o ring replacement, multiple fluid flushes and hours of sitting there going lock to lock trying to bleed air from the system. I finally found a fix for it. The stock spring clamps that attach the hose from the resovoir to the pump somehow were letting air into the system. It didn't show any signs of leaking but if I turned the wheel fast enough it was able to pull air in from those shitty spring clamps. I replaced all the spring clamps with some nice worm/gear clamps and was able to snug those up alot tighter than those spring clamps could ever dream of. After I replaced all those, I did another flush and bleed sequence and after a few days of driving and engine heat cycles it's completely back to normal. No noises, juddering or headaches 😁 steering felt brand new and light as a feather.

On my '07 Impreza 2.5i, I had the juddering, mostly when turning right. I too used screw/worm gear (heater hose) clamps to replace the original factory clamps. Even with the wheels off of the ground, it took a LONG time to get all of the air out of the system. Once I did, it was quiet, smooth, and linear.

@@zannyZ06 I had the front of the '07 Impreza off of the ground on jack stands. I removed the bad power steering pump and the intake snorkel that goes right over top of the pump. I turned the steering back and forth several times, engine off, to attempt to purge the old fluid out of the system. I tried to pour and pump some PS fluid into the newer pump through it's suction side by turning it by hand. Then, I put on the good junkyard pump and reconnected the hoses. Filled the reservoir 3/4 of the way. Started the car, letting it idle, and slowly turned the steering back and forth. I would take roughly 30 seconds to go from full left to full right, 30 seconds to go back. The pump was LOUD, like "this is a bad pump!" loud! I would turn off the engine and add fluid about every minute. After about 15-20 minutes of this, all of the noise and goofiness of the steering was gone. I MAYBE had to add some fluid a day later, then it was completely fine. No noise, no leaks, no juddering. It's a stupid design. They should have just kept with the old PS pump that had the metal reservoir on top of the pump, and mounted the whole pump lower. Having the reservoir LOWER than the entire pump, especially without really good hose fittings on the suction side of the pump, is bad engineering practice. This reinforces my opinion that Subaru is run half by idiots and half by brilliant people.

Thank you for this video. I just replaced the entire rack and pinion as well as the pump itself on my 05 H4 NA. I have pulled a vacuum on the system and it holds about 20 bar with no drops, so there doesn't appear to be a leak but the brand new pump (Lares) is pretty noisy after several attempts to air bleed the system. It does go away once the system reaches temperature and I did replace the O-ring with the new pump, but not that suction hose. The high pressure hoses that route down to the rack and pinion are also brand new. I will give this a look when we get home. Thank you again

I just went through this with my Baja Turbo. Bought a brand new OE pump for over $400 after the remanufactured unit the previous owner had installed decided to take a ATF dump through the pump shaft front seal. Not fun fixing a bad PO's neglect. My Subaru specialist told me the same thing about the lack of a OE rebuild kit for the pumps the H6 and turbo 4s use. Apparently remanufactured ones are rebuilt with off the shelf o-rings, gaskets and seals so the longevity and reliability is a crap shoot. I found this out the hard way unfortunately but it is what it is.

Great vid on preventative maintenance. That hose to the pump guaranteed to become rock hard eventually. That hydraulic pump is the most expensive part of the system and,. probably easiest part to service. The OEM rack will last a lifetime if you don't contaminate the system. The rack, is less than $30 and seals and helper are maybe $40. The time to pull it, a "professional" rebuild and installation... priceless. For those who care, they are one of the most reliable systems on your vehicle. "Topping off" your fluid, without tracking down the source=contamination, #1 reason for failure. Keeping air from entering the high-pressure side will make the seals in the rack very happy. It's one of the least "wearable" systems. I'm putting my vote on a inner CV boot replacement somewhere in the future. I forget the exact amount, but I was just talk shop with my local Subaru service manager and it was over $200.

To the body shop when I have a painted hood waiting to be installed. Everything has fluid as I go to bleed my reservoir foams up in a few mins I have UV dye but saw the end of the rack and PS all over the garage. Should I still dye it? I think the toe truck when dragged it some how pulled excessively on the tire to some how mess that seal up, otherwise the headlight was destroyed, hood bumper, but that corner panel is fine. **ANYONE ELSE PLEASE COMMENT OR 2 CENTS

After removing engine, I got a nasty whine from my PS pump when I finally got it all back together. What I think happened is the strain that was put on the hose/pump when it was hanging off to the side to get motor out finally did the 17 year old O-ring in. Really hoping this will be the quick $6 fix! I ordered a 100 pack of O-rings for $3 and an OEM one for $3... whichever arrives first will probably get installed!

Hey Mr. Subaru, thank you for the information! My 2008 Impreza is having this same noise, so I'm gonna replace the o ring and hose and clips to help alleviate it. However, I have a question about the power steering reservoir. My p/s reservoir (part number 34630AG001) looks like it is leaking/sucking in air at the seam that's approximately 3/4ths the way down, I assume that the p/s reservoir is actually 2 formed plastic molds that are glued together (or at least that's my theory). Have you seen p/s reservoirs leak or suck in air at these seams because of expansion/cooling of the plastic? I'm debating on if I should replace the reservoir as well. Hope you have had a wonderful Christmas and New Year, and thank you for all you do for the Subaru DIY community.

  • @williamallen7836

    @williamallen7836

The reservoir is not glued. They are sonic welded plastic. I have seen sonic plastic welds fail over time, but you would see the hydraulic fluid seeping, or full on leaking from a seem that wasn't welded correctly. The other area you need to be aware of is the rack it's self. Ware the high preasure line connects to the rack could be leaking. The low preasure return side can leak as well, but is less likely to do so. Also beaware of the area that the high preasure hose transitions to the metal hard line on both ends, the line it's self could be bad. Then there's the seals in the rack that can be bad. One of the most common spots for a rack to leak is, the seals under the boots that seal the shafts. TLDR; first step is diagnose ware your leak is coming from. This way you know which part(s) to focus on. There are leak detection kits that you can buy at parts stores. The dealership may even sell one, but they will charge top $ for it. The kits contain a dye that you add to the system, and go for a drive. Then use the included goggles and UV light to spot ware your leak(s) are at.

Do you have any videos that might address the Surge in voltage coming from the alternator? Seems like my lights get brighter and then get dimmer and it's a constant battle. I don't know if it's just a voltage regulator issue or what. Thank you.

what about a 2010 Forester? My daughter's car is showing signs of a bad pump, but I'd like to try this first. It's noisy sometimes and it's a little stiff or funny feeling when turning it into and out of a parking spot. So, I hope the pump isn't bad, but...

Thanks! I've been having issues with the power steering in my 05 Forester XT. I'll definitely take a closer look at the o-ring and hose. I also noticed that I have to tighten the belt every couple thousand kms or the wheel starts to kick. Do you have a video that would cover this issue?

04 FXT here, I've done 5000k's in mine since purchasing and all I've done was draw the old fluid and replace with new in the reservoir. Haven't touched the belts and I'm sitting at 195k, preparing for the huge 200k service. Might be an incorrectly sized belt, or some other component (possibly not holding set tension?) in the belt's pathing.

Hello! I like your videos, keep up the good work! I was wondering if you could do a video of the problems or the things to look out for when looking for a 2.0 Diesel… I´m looking for one because of the low consumption but around 90% of the Subaru’s on sales that have engine problems are diesel… So, I´m a bit scared to buy one … I would like to educate myself about it. Thanks, 😊

My 2014 outback 2.5I had a leaky ps return line that was replaced. The ps pump now makes noise like a piston slap noise but works fine and I Can't usually here it when driving until I slow down. Should I be concerned about the ps pump seizing and throwing my belt or having some other catastrophic failure? Or, should I just drive it until it gets really bad?

I can attest that the ps pump is pricey for an oem and not rebuilt. For my 06 Subaru wrx costed me around 350. The both hoses that connect to the ps reservoir both total price from the dealership costed me around 120. Replacing both hoses due to being hardened.

Have you made a video of an electronic steering rack going bad? I ask because I believe mine on my 2016 Outback has issues as there is clunking when I back up and sometimes when I turn the steering wheel. I Have replaced the front struts (including the top hats) with fully assembled OEM ones and the clunking sound it still there.

In your video, you mentioned that Subaru hasn't made a official rebuild kit for the PS pump thats on the 3.0l. I'm currently sporting a 03' VDC outback and noticed my pump is leaking a bit. No noticable whining at all, just leaking around the pump itself. Would it be possible to create a video of the differences of the 3.0l PS pump and the 2.5l PS pump as far as rebuilding them goes?

Turns out my hose was the problem. It was very hard I originally tried changing the o ring but it would still make the noise. Soo I bought. A new suction hose and in removal of my old suction hose it had two tears in the hose . When I started up the engine the noise continued but I place more transmission fluid also allowed the engine to warm up I locked the steering wheel a couple times after the engine warmed up and the noise disappeared.

I just replaced my power steering pump on my 2010 Subaru Outback. I also exchanged the brass washers as well as the o-rings with brand new ones, and I made sure to bleed the system. But the pump keeps making noise and the fluid is getting filled with air bubbles. Can you offer any advice? I know it’s not leaking anywhere, so should I keep bleeding it or should I just start it and let it work through it?

I have an issue where the wheel and steering wheel occasionally shakes slightly when I turn the wheel. It happens when the tires are on or off the ground. It happens more the I'm slightly off center. It might happen more when the system is cold. I've changed the suction hose and o-ring and the fluid has been changed and level is fine. I bought the reseal kit, but have not done it yet. I've never had an issue losing fluid. I'm not really seeing new leaks on the high pressure side or at the steering rack. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I replaced my pump in my 2011 outback w/ the 3.6l. Turned the steering wheel side to side making sure I couldn't hear the pump whine anymore & after all said & done whenever I go into reverse & turn to back out the car will idle really low until it completely turns off. Do you think it's a separate issue? Thank you for the video.

I have to try this. I don't really have a noisy pump but I get no assist on cold mornings until I apply a lot of force to the wheel, when I then feel the system start to work and the assist kick in. I did a fluid flush already and it looked fine, I'm afraid the valving in the rack and pinion was goofed up.
