Some of Scotty's videos should be mandatory viewing for high school auto shop. Heck it should be required for all high school. How many kids would leave school with at least a basic understanding of the cars they are about to climb into. How much money would they save over their life not getting ripped off. The best part is, it would be free education.

Facts

Take off the return line to the reservoir off and put it in a container, have wife start the car and turn the wheel while you pur new oil in the reservoir. When it's all clean, stop and put the return line back on. Done.

I knew a lady who took her Chevy Into the dealership for service . It only had 30,000 miles on it but they told her she needed a ' Power Steering Flush ' . They said if she didnt get it done , It would void her warranty . Afterwords I checked her owners manual looking for the Recommended Time / Mileage that Power steering fluid should be changed but there was nothing about it in the Owners manual . So I called the 800 Number in the manual and talked to GM . They keep putting me on hold . So I figured it was just a rip off that the dealer was doing on that lady . I called the Attorney Generals office and told them it was a ripoff . A car with only 30k miles on it isnt required to have its power steering changed . They told me to call the Dealer and tell them we were filing a complaint and that a 2 year old car with 30k miles on it , did NOT require a Power Steering flush . I called the dealer / service writer and told him he ripped her off . He never disagreed and just said " Send her back " . They refunded her $88.oo for the Power Steering flush and never said a word . Bottom Line ? Dealers will rip you off especially if you are a woman who knows nothing about cars .

Awful. I wouldn't be surprised if some mechanics tried to sell a power steering fluid flush and change to people who actually have electronic power power steering just take advantage of someone who doesn't really know much about their car.

OMG! where else can you go and be so entertained and educated at the same time. Thank you Scotty for sharing your knowledge. I’ve been maintaining my own cars for over 40 years now and I still have a lot to learn with the new tech that is being used. This is one of the first places I check when I need advice or guidance.

When I managed a lube shop, I offered a power steering fluid change for $15. This was back in the late eighties, early nineties. We used the same vacuum tank we used to drain automatic transmissions while the pit man was removing the pan and replacing differentials without drain plugs.

You already have a vacuum extractor so use that to extract the old fluid via the PS return pipe. Keep topping up the reservoir until you see the new fluid coming through.

I watch your videos over and over again Scotty. I've been working on cars since 1974 or there abouts it's like listening to a friend.

Exactly what I did to my recent purchase of 1990 Jeep Comanche. I extracted the fluid with a turkey baster. I didn’t drive it between extractions, tho. I just turned the wheel back and forth lock to lock. I repeated the process four times because the original fluid looked like black coffee.

I love Scotty's neighborhood. It's just like the one I grew up in also the one I live in now. A real estate agent would call it mid-century meaning most/all the houses are ranch style or split level built in the 1950s/60s when one 2x4 weighed what 6 of them weigh today. Like Scotty's old cars, with a little maintenance and TLC these houses will last forever cozy and comfy. Scotty, you're a great teacher you've done everyone a huge favor with your videos. Live long and prosper amigo..

Another way of doing hydraulic power steering fluid change: You can also put the front wheels off of the ground on jack stands, and take off one end of a power steering hose. Put several drain pans underneath. Then turn the wheels left and right a few times. Put the hose back on and refill the reservoir with power steering fluid. Start the engine, let it idle, then slowly turn the steering back and forth all of the way until you have smooth, quiet steering and enough fluid in the reservoir. Keep adding fluid as needed. Then cap the reservoir, put the car on the ground, and test drive it. This is also what you end up doing if you have to replace a bad power steering pump like I did on two different Subarus.

My 250,000 mile power steering was getting very loud without any air in the system, so I was scoping out changing the pump. Before I got another I did a ' non- running ' flush and freshened the fluid. That helped it out 90% and I'm still using it.

Great reminder to do a more thorough PS Fluid flush/replace on my 06 Tundra DC! Did 2-3 cycles a couple years ago and after only a few thousand miles a 5 cycle refresh should have it fine for years! Thanks Scotty!

I think the best thing you can do for your power steering is to Never hold it at it's extremes. When you turn the wheel all the way and pull on the steering wheel to hold the tires so you can turn as tight as possible. Don't do it, when you hear that whining noise as your trying to turn the wheels as far as possible, That's the steering pump trying to push MAX pressure, that's wearing everything out. The seals, the pump, the fluid, it destroys the entire steering system. I have always turned my wheel until it stops then turn it back a quarter turn or so, so it's not whining and wearing out. 377,000 miles and still have all the original steering system components. Edit: I don't think that we have seen all the ways electronic assist can fail yet, but I would imagine that holding your steering wheel at the extremes would be hard on electronic assist as well.

Heads up: Some cars nowadays use ATF in their power steering systems. Definitely read the car manual and read what the lid says. Most times it tells you exactly what fluid it takes.

Thank you for this video. I am gonna change my.power steering fluid on my 2004 Sienna and maybe have the mechanic change the belt or belts if they need changing.

Scotty Pennsylvania love you and you know that. We share your information with hundreds if not thousands of our clients on Facebook. I had a slight leak in my power steering pump on my second GEN 99. So I use Lucas sealer It’s thick and works but come in the winter time it gels up with my experience I lost my power steering so what I did was I reversed pumped out all the Lucas and put regular fluid in. Now it may be that you have to heat up the engine compartment considerably so that Lucas liquefies but I took no chances. I sucked out all the residue from it cleaned it out and I don’t See it leaking anymore it’s possible Lucas did its job and sealed the unit where the hole was because I don’t see it leaking but in any event I’m sure information might help

Hey Scotty, love ya videos. My sister's Kia Soul has one of those electronic power steering. A cushion or gasket (I don't know what to call it) broke and had to be replaced. The whole steering assembly had to come off to change that $5 cushion. Now it's working fine. Cost of repair...Parts: $5...Labor: $400.

Some vehicles it's recommended to use ATF in the power steering. 2007 matrix might be one of those vehicles

Yeah, I think the power steering fluid is the third most frequently managed fluid in my truck. First being motor oil, second being washer fluid. I like to check the color and level of the fluid. If it starts looking too dark I'll use the turkey baster method to flush it with new ATF (manual calls for Mercon III for power steering, Mercon V for the transmission).

Scotty, Love your channel & I tell others to watch your videos. Perhaps redirect the return line going back to the reservoir to a Bucket. Jack up front of car. Start car, let P S pump out the Old fluid and pour in New fluid in reservoir. Need 2 people as to not let pump go dry. Like a Transfusion. Continue until new fluid goes into bucket. yup!!!!, you nailed it on the head about refrigerator compressors not lasting, they are made by "EMBRACO", and they are "JUNK". I have been in the hvac-r business 45 years. the copeland compressor company no longer make the small "TIN CAN' compressors, they are sourced out to "EMBRACO", and they just get out of warrantee( 1 year warrantee) when they fail, so there is no claim for getting a free replacement compressor.

Last week my girlfriend mentioned it's hard for her to steer her car when driving slow so I asked how long it's been that way and she was like "oh about 6 months". I said "and you're just mentioning it now?". I went to check her fluid and it was completely bone dry. I added fluid to the max line and within a few minutes it was down to the minimum line and then stopped dropping.

My 2011 Ford Fusion has electric power steering- and it doesn't work, then i found out that there is a recall for 2011 models with electric power steering, but... mine was built 6 days before the recall, i currently have a complaint in with NHTSA, but in the mean time it's quite annoying driving around without power steering

So I have a cheap battery operated Harbor Freight transfer pump that should work. I’m hoping to adapt a smaller hose that’ll fit in the reservoir and go down deep to get more out. Any thoughts?

My Scion XB, sometimes when the weather is cold the steering will lock up at first start up. This makes me think there's some condensation in the fluid that freezes. I've had the car for 10 years & to my knowledge the power steering fluid has never been changed. I worry that if I change it it might mess up something like in a transmission that's went a long time without a fluid change. I know that power steering is not as complex as a transmission. I wonder if it would be safe to change the power steering fluid.

It took me 3 full days to change out the high pressure power steering hose on my Buick LuCerne. I can see why it costs $800 for the mechanic to do it.

Have you considered or tried using your fluid extractor for a coolant exchange or is it just too hard to get it all?

Scotty, I have a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 3.6. I put the wrong type of power steering fluid in and shortly after that the pump is now leaking at the pump. Can I just change the fluid and will that stop the leaking, or change the two rubber O rings and fluid? It has a Electro-Hydraulic pump and calls for MS-11655 fluid. I am guessing the wrong fluid made it start to leak. Thanks for you help.

I did this to my old Silverado last year after starting to hear a light noise. After draining and putting in new fluid and a year later still no noise.

I do it where it takes only 1 time and approximately 10 seconds for a complete exchange. Jack up the front of the car turn wheel full left. Remove as much Fluid from resovior as posible . Disconnect return line and attach a hose extension to a bucket. Temporary plug the reservoir return nipple. Fill resovior with fresh Fluid. Simultaneously start car, turn the wheel full right while filling resovior. Immediately stop engine. Reconnect the return hose. Refill resovior as needed. Start engine ,turn wheel full left, shut off engine. Recheck level. This method you're completely eliminating all the dirty Fluid in one shot instead of diluting the dirt by sucking the reservoir 5 or 6 times.

thanks Scotty for being brutally and even humorously honest. I manage a lube and general repair shop in the hot California desert and because I'm such a religious car maintenance guy it genuinely disturbs and even maddens me the huge trend of neglect I see my customers do to their cars. granted it's a low income community and very few people have money or the cars worth maintaining but they get mad when they neglect their cars and blame me or others when me and my guys go by the book and pride ourselves in honest business. customers with batteries testing at 20 cca out of 600 cca say no thanks I don't want a battery. customers go 15k miles or much more in desert heat on conventional oil until they run the engine bone dry of oil and all fluids and say no I don't want anything but the cheapest oil change. it's their cars but don't blame others when things go horribly wrong. if people knew the benefit and long term savings of simple car maintenance they would think again before waiting until major repairs are needed. I mean why drive a car if u can't care for it it doesn't make sense and u have been preaching it for years so thanks for doing what u can to make people see the light because they don't believe me. I even show many customers your videos to prove to them. well, ally American brand cars have lasted me half a million miles and still looked and ran great when I upgraded cuz I'm a firm believer in frequent maintenance so at least my cars will look and run great while those fools are stranded on the roadside stuck with a huge repair bill lmao hahahaha

I agree often a model of car can get a bad reliability rap because the type of buyer does not do maintenance.

I've probably changed the power steering fluid over 4 times in the past few months on my 03 f150 started leaking, pretty sure one of the seals on the gearbox went and haven't been able to fix it yet just been topping it up. so far so good. Stained the driveway though.

DO NOT USE STOP LEAK FROM LUCAS OR ANYONE. So many times I’d have a small leak, trans, oil, power steering, coolant, every time I’ve used stop leak it only made it 10x worse. Just fix it or top it off.

Interesting video, Scotty. I have a 2004 Focus and have read that the only PS fluid to put in my vehicle is Mercron V and nothing else. But you show Prestone Power Steering Fluid...is this ok to use with a 2004 Focus? Thanks for any help. jon

I've nevr seen power steering fluid that type and color, always seen the red one, which is the SAME ATF (automatic transmission fluid), which is what I've had on mine since I've bought it. Also, I always thought that, doing it that way, the way you did, there's the risk of getting "air" in the system, and it wouldn't be good.

Older cars used a diff fluid that was just Power Steering Fluid. Both of my 2001's use the light gold colored PS fluid.

I recently replaced a power steering hoses on a classic car and added an inline filter at the same time.

What scan tool was used in this video...THX...GB

My old 1992 Nissan "Hardbody" pickup didn't have power steering assist and it wasn't that hard to steer. One guy told me that power steering isn't really needed and it's too easy to "over correct", whatever that means.

Would this method work if i (for the sake of the question) was using a different brand than what was previously used or would it just be better to do a complete flush to avoid any possible issues

I do that turkey baster method every few years. Barely uses a quart of ATF and my pump still works great and doesn't even whine after 220,000 miles.
