Chris would make a great automotive instructor.
The diagnostic portion is always as valuable as the actual repair! Well done.
Quick tip, put a jack under the front of the vehicle and take the pressure off the wheels. It's a lot easier to turn that way. Also, if you get some air trapped in there, like the Dodge/Chrysler setups like to do(particularly the old Cummins trucks), you may have to turn the wheel lock to lock without the engine running first to push some of that air out. Good luck all! Thanks Chris! Another great video!

Hey Chris, just wanted to thank you for your videos! Your info is short and to the point. You don't wonder off about who invented the wheel or about the history of the car. Stuff that has nothing to do with your video. The majority of mechanics or DIYers on KZread drift off the topic of the video, you don't do that! You stay on topic and to the point! "...about who invented the wheel ..." Sorry, had to snicker at this a little, considering how many wheels (incl. gears, pulleys, and the impeller core) are actually in this video and at least partially related to the process. More than even the average car repair video, I think. Also noting Chris coming back to read and comment two years later. Very nice.

You make working on cars look so much more fun than the experience I’ve had, probably cuz I’m always working with my dad. Thanks Chris, that was fascinating! i had that problem in my old Elantra last summer, i didn't tackle it myself, but now i know how my mecanic repaired it, and like G.I.Joe always said knowing is half the battle !
Was able to replace my power steering thanks to you first time ever working on a car…. It was fun might have to learn more and buy a project car to toy around with.
Thanks for keeping things like the stuck pully at 10:00 in the video. It makes the video last longer, but shows that's I'm not the only one that always has these kinds of problems when trying to fix my car.
It amazes me the production quality on his videos and for so many years he still keeps up with doing it all by himself pretty impressive
I get a sense of calm everytime i hear the torque wrench click over at the right torque. I dont know why but its satisfying.
Great video. The exact same thing happened on my car, which is exactly the same car as in this video. But one comment, once you have even a little bit of forward speed, there's almost no difference between power steering on/off in E46's. This is why they have such great road feel, you are getting almost direct feedback from the wheels. It just helps out when you're stopped and trying to park. And yes, turning at a stop without PS is a workout. My GF liked me better when the PS was broken. Oh well.
Imprint on the reservoir: Use ATF only. ChrisFix: nah, I’m gonna put some shady European full synthetic power steering fluid in. Also: when you bleed the pump, you actually don’t want to have your wheels on the ground. Makes turning easier and your steering components will thank you.

Actually in E46 all you need to do is step on the gas, and then the pump will prime itself and start to circulate. No need to wrestle it left to right like that.
I am a mechanic apprentice and I am learning a lot from your videos! Go on! You are the best!
Excellent video (again) and the only thing I might add is to life the car on jack stands in the front. That will lighten up the steering a bit compared to the tires compressing on the ground, under the weight of the car.
Been educated on cars so much by Chris's good quality videos! THANK YOU!

Chirs fix is awesome omg just saved me I thought it was the power steering pump but I was very low on fluid thank god I caught it on time I just got this e46 325i and I’m bringing it back to life wish me luck I’ve done extensive research looked at forums and common issues I have a lot of the common juices right now but the parts are actually so cheap for these and they have a very good after market very excited to get it up to date 😁
Pro tip from dealing with fluids in cramped german cars. If you need to catch the fluid before it hits the ground for some reason (like protecting the alternator), one trick I like to do is use a zip lock bag underneath where fluid will come out. The bag can go into any shape you need to catch fluids and can reuse the fluid if you needed/wanted to. Especially nice with some brake master cylinders that have a drain hole instead of a removable filter so you don't mess up the paint.
Me: chris my tooth hurts. Chris: Dont worry you just need common hand tools

Next time when you’re bleeding the power steering fluid raise the front wheels off the ground. It makes turning the wheel a lot easier and is better on the new pump

Or drive the car (carefully ofc) if you don't have a way to lift both wheels at the same time, it will also be a bit easier to steer and won't damage your driveway (if the car in on the ground) or risk moving the ramps.

best is with the wheels completely off the ground. Then if you can't do second best that being an empty lot so the car is moving when you torque on the steering wheel, you can use dish soap on the steel ramps.

One other thing, you should also allow the pump to get filled with some fluid before u start the car. Otherwise, if you can damage the new pump as it heats up, even with the turning if the wheels. For example, before tightening the high pressure line, allow gravity to pull fluid downwards. As soon as you see fluid dripping out of the high pressure fitting, then you can tighten to spec.. Cool video!!

Mine was screaming when I turned it on, but I’m pretty sure it’s a BUNCH of air. I was scared to move it, but you’ve convinced me to just send it and it should be good. Thank you!

Thank you, Chris. Honestly, thank you so much. In no small part, you are responsible for me methodically and slowly fixing small issues in my cars that only a few years ago I would have definitely paid a mechanic to fix. There are still bigger issues I go to a mechanic for. But that line is slowly moving up. Just literally yesterday I decided to check the vacume lines for my turbo before I sent the car to a mechanic to fix the turbo. Sure enough, there was a leak and all it took were two tubes of shrinkwrap over a small cut. (I'll change the line if it becomes a problem again.) I know for a fact that even half a year ago, I didn't have the courage, know how or self trust required to even attempt to check what could be wrong with a turbo. I know that, because the turbo has been acting funky for half a year before I finally gathered the courage to actually check it myself, thanks to youtubers like you, showing that fixing a car doesn't require years of experience or all specialty tools.

Oh you're not gonna believe this. I got a Jersey bred E-36 with a high pressure hose leak and I've been dillydallying about replacing that line, even thought I've had the part in the garage for over a year. What are da odds we're both working on virtually the same system.... Go figure. Excellent video, and get cracking on more factory videos like the NRS brake pad build. Beats me going to Canada, since my last factory visit was 1956 to the GM assembly plant in Linden, NJ (long gone now). NRS is on my list for all my replacement work now.
