How to Replace a Transmission (Full DIY Guide)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Transmission removal, replacement, and installation. Learn how to remove a transmission so you can replace your clutch or flywheel, or so you can rebuild your transmission and install a new one in your car or truck.
In this video I show you the 10 simple steps on how to replace a transmission. I am doing this on a rear wheel drive 98 Mustang but the process is very similar on other rear wheel drive, front wheel drive, and even automatic cars and trucks. Each detailed step will allow you to learn how to remove a transmission yourself so you can replace a clutch, flywheel, rear main seal, throw out bearing, pilot bearing, or just swap transmissions.

To answer the most common questions in the comments section: 1.) Quality videos like this take a lot of time to produce. This and the next took me over 300hrs. 2.) Follow me on Instagram "ChrisFixit" for daily updates and tips and tricks. 3.) The exhaust on the car is the performance exhaust, just used on the track. 4.) The speedometer is fine... it spun all the way around at the last drift event and I havent had a chance to take the gauge cluster out and push it back to the other side of the peg. 5.) This is why I drive automatics. Lol good work Chris. My dad and I replaced his clutch on a late 90s camaro. Took like 5 hours but we were a 33 year old with bad eyesight and a distracted 14 year old who just wanted a wataburger when we were done. Also didn't have a transmission jack. Dad was benchpressing the transmission while I shoved it forward to install. He knew what he was doing, but I lacked the skills to be of any real use. Wish I would have taken it all more seriously at that time and appreciated the time spent together. Thanks for the memories

I had fun doing this a few years ago for my 94 Mazda B2300. Clutch went out, and I had barely any money so I did the whole job with a few harbor freight sockets, extensions, torque wrench, and jack stands. Everything else was by hand, I had to lay the transmission on my chest and knees to get it off and on. Even used the truck's jack to lift the truck because I didn't have a proper jack at the time. Really taught me how much can be done with simple hand tools, and I haven't been scared about any other repair job since then.

Hey Chris, it’s Chris. I’ve never worked on cars nor do I plan on it, however I watch every single one of your videos and here’s why. It gives me knowledge of automobiles I ordinarily would not have. I then take that knowledge to the mechanics shop and I’m able to have conversations about my vehicle where I seem like I know what I’m talking about preventing me from being taken advantage of! Thank you for this! Just wanted to chime in and let you know that there is a tremendous amount of value in what you do even when some of your audience will never work on cars. Thanks buddy!

Great idea of getting a transmission jack. I took out a duel range hydromatic transmission from my 1955 Cadillac with a floor jack with a small piece of plywood and the transmission sure enough rolled off and pined me and a helper under the car. Those old transmissions are like an anchor for the passenger ship the Queen Mary.

My manual transmission is much simpler on a 50yr old 4 speed so I don't have all the sensors to disconnect. I've also been told I don't have to drain any trans fluid. Just came across this video and fit to say, you do a "stellar" job outlining, explaining & performing the steps required to do this specific task, 5 stars and a big 👍 's up! I have yet to look at other videos but my son and I are removing the engine from his 2011 Mazdaspeed gen2 as we believe his #3 ring has failed, compression tested 155, the rest were 180. We've completely removed the front of the car and unattached/ disassembled everything we even think might be in the way of a clean lift and removal but have paused at removing the trans axles & clutch. We believe the clutch can be removed from the 5 bolts on the top where the manual clutch shifter mechanism enters the transmission. Then the 2 nuts on each end of the axles for removal. I've noted these steps to frame up where we're at with this task in hopes that you or one of your subscribers could comment, let us know if we're on track, what to keep an eye on or tell us, hold up do this instead... finding videos and good quality ones hasn't been productive. Thanks for your input in advance and again awesome video looking forward to others! Oh forgot to mention we've not yet drained the trans fluid but it's on the list. (Chris - New Brunswick, Canada)

It had 140,000 miles, so I knew that it was due for multiple routine things. Check engine lights are also helpful because the car knows something is wrong and it is telling you. I bought a code reader for $70 and it was the best investment I've made. You can fix the vast majority of check engine lights for less than $100 and it would've cost that much for a mechanic to tell you what the problem is and not fix it.

Hey ChrisFix I just wanted to say thank you, sincerely. My 00' Mustang sat for almost 2 months in my friends driveway (My first car and I really have affection for it haha) after we saw your video on how to replace a transmission we decided we would give it a try. None of us (three people counting) has ever done such thing, the most we have done is change a motor oil, but thanks to this video and the sequel of "How to replace a clutch" we were able to fix my car this sunday January 20th, after 10 hours of hardwork, blood and sweat we replaced the clutch, pilot bearing, throw out bearing and fork. So for any of you wanting to attempt to fix anything on your car, ChrisFix's videos are the way to go they are so detailed that is impossible not to do what it says. Thanks for all the effort you put on your videos ChrisFix it was really helpfull! Ps: We would've finished in less than ten hours if it wasn't that cold that day 22° haha.

Another perfect instructional video Chris! Always try it yourself, you have nothing to lose, whatever you're attempting to fix, it's broken anyway. As Chris mentioned, you have the satisfaction of doing your own repairs, and you saved a ton of money, and, you have new tools for later! Pretty much all of this is simple to do, just break it down into sub-categories. I took my 2010 M35-X to the Infiniti dealer, (slipping in 4th gear), they said I needed a new transmission installed for $8700! Right! Picked up a code reader, threw two codes, transmission control module was bad. Drained & dropped the pan and the C-module, checked the module circuit board...guess what, one of the flat line circuits was cracked! Cleaned and soldered a wire across, reinstalled, etcetera, work's perfect to this day, only cost me about $100 bucks with gasket and new synthetic transmission oil...got-a love it!
