Do you know by chance how much it cost you to do the swap obviously minus labor but I just want to know I have a 2011 Subaru outback I also have a 2 inch lift for it and some suspension and wheels but the four cylinder that came in it is not going to have enough power or torque so I’ve been curious to try to find a diesel swap I’m wondering about how much the motor cost you the extra parts you replaced and overall how complicated was the fitment and everything It’s ok if you don’t have time to respond to this it’s OK but I am just curious and it would mean the world to me to have this info I really want to start this build ASAP

I've never seen a diesel Subaru in the US, but had and older Mercedes 300 CD 5 cylinder that ran like a champ for 500,000 smiles, and then I needed a pickup truck. Looks like you've got all the little bugs out that come with an engine swap and best with it.

We had a 300 when I was growing up, rusted to bits, but the never had any issues and just kept on running. Not sure of the milage as I was so young, but my father bought it of a taxi-driver so had seom miles on it. My brothers Subaru kept on running for 2-3 years after this and now he has sold it. I will make an update on this later. 😊 Happy new year! Simon

Hehehe. I now know to guys who have had to change out their boxer diesel so I think there is something about them. Was actually not the worst car to change an engine on, as it came pretty easily out. Would have gone a lot faster if they hadn't cut all the wires, pipes and left a broken bolt in the engine. 🙂 Good luck with the gearbox Rune. 👍

Hey, it had a failing crank/bearings do to the lack on oil. A known production error, a liqued gasket laid during production closed a oil whole. Not sure about the details but a common cause for the Euro 4 engine to fail. My brother is still driving, 8000km now, so it is holding up well. :) Hope you are in luck and don't get the same issue. Subaru's are great, I owned a WRX back in the day my self. :) Thanks for watching and stay safe. 👍🙂

There is a bleed screw on heater core pipe, you can see it at 25:55 there is a plastic 90 degree elbow on left heater core pipe. That bleerder needs to be open when filling up coolant untill all the air comes out. otherwise good job.

Hi Simon, nice family job your bro seems to be a master of patience & skillfulness ;-). I do own an OB which shares the same engine (EE20 Euro5 -2014) and this is my second Outback after 420.000 km driven with the first one (EE20 - 2012). Pity for your engine but I was very surprised that an engine swap has been requested for an Euro5 (Black intake manifold). As you are most probably aware of, these engines have been upgraded by FHI from 2012 (New lay-out of the steel supports of the slide bearings) after the Euro4-disaster (The ones with the silver intake manifold). Should you be interested in a few tips e.g. on the maintenance of the DPF which gave me > 400.000km as lifetime on my first Outback, I would be more than happy to share these with you. Confidence in motion is back! ;-)

Hey and thank you. I think this is a euro 4 engine, despite the black intake. This is a 2010 outback so would think it's a euro 4, but I'm not an Subaru man. I was told changing from a euro 4 to a euro 5 is a bit more work, but I was never told what. Guessing you need to program the ECU. Got a tip about the problem being gone in the euro 5 and got asked why we did not upgrade, answer being we did not consider it an option at the time. 🙂👍 If you have some deep insite into the DPF please share, this is space for learning so if someone else with and outback, or the same engine, comes around and sees this I guess they would be more than happy to read what you have to say about the DPF. 😀 Thanks, for watching and the detailed response. Really appreciate it. Best, Simon.

@@LandRoverDrive Hi Simon - Yes you do have according MHI specs sheet an Euro4 fitted in you 2010 OB - A swap to Euro5-GEN2 engine (2012-2014) was possible without DCU reprogramming by keeping E4 glowplugs, E4 turbocharger & E4 Injectors. Loads of owner's of Subaru cars sharing the "E4-GEN1" EE20 engine have been doing the move to E5 following their engine failure after 80.000-120.000 km (Metal fatigue of crankcase material - stress fracture in the slide bearings housing area's causing o.a. the crankshaft to break). As alternative and since a very few people on earth do have a skilled & devoted brother like you have, upgraded GEN2 short blocks are available from Subaru when failed E4-GEN1 engine is kept.

I'd also try to mod it for even MORE horse power too! Id rework parts that could fail. I love the AWD! rally . There is a video on youtube where some guys have a 500 HP 2009 gas Forrester! too cool ! Thanks man, appreciate that. And yeah, there is a lot of great mods out there. I have always liked the Subary linup, and I have owned a 2005 WRX, but I think they did a bad choice on removing the low gear option on the new cars. This was one of the great features and what made it so great. Petrol is good option for the long haul, as it's much cheaper to maintain and less expensive parts that could faile like glow plugs and injectors. I think the XT with low gear would have been a great car to own. Cheers!

@@LandRoverDrive cool 😎 I love the subies too after I got mine in 2015. I had to have my Throttle body replaced and head gasket. But I had one of those extended warranties. 1,800 US bucks but they did at least Five grand worth of work. So it paid off.. The car hauls ass now. It's so light! I put good Michelin tires as wide as I could get it for a factory rims. Solid now. The three things I'd like to do currently would be a nice computer chip that still passes smog ...and exhaust and little better shocks and struts all the way around. Still would like to study the diesel engine that could possibly go into it and strip it all the way down rebuild it ...turn it into a project before I landed it into the car. I'd like the torc and pulling plus more horse power 🇺🇲👍 I was a United States Marine corps F18 jet mechanic in the 90s But I am a broke dreamer now. Thanks for the inspiration depression killer.

Overlanding is my mind release and being out in nature. F18 jet mechanic is cool, the have been Norways number one fighting jet for quite some time now. Currently being change out by F35's. Yeah, I feel like the Diesel was an experient motor for Subaru. The norwegian market and the politicians were very pro diesel in that period. They are not anymore so seeing more petrol on all brands now here, including Subaru. I think the overall cost of a car will be lower with a petrol, when the expensive diesel components starts to fail and need replacing. But the day to day cost, here in Norway, is a bit lower with diesel because of the fuel pricing. Around 2NOK 0.18 punds, 0.2$ difffernce in pricing per liter. :) I think I will think about going for petrol on my next car.. Thanks for watching, commenting and I'm glad you liked the video. He forgot to write down the numbers on the injectors and had to struggle to read the numbers due to their placements. Would be strange if there wasn’t a write up or a video on this on the internet. 🤔 You could call a Subaru workshop and ask, or drive by one, mechanics usually love to talk shop if you ask them questions. 😉 Sorry we couldn’t be more of help on this. 😊 Simon
