Well I have a 2010 Subaru Legacy and I had the same problem. Couldn’t figure out what it was at first. I changed the cam and crankshaft sensors I changed the radiator, new wheel bearings, brakes, rotors, brake hoses, and a lot more work and still had the same problem. The stall comes when you come to a stop and the hesitation is from the engine. It isn’t a transmission problem. Come to find out out I came to start my car one day and I had a rough idle and strong smell of gas. The engine light was on flashing, disable cruise control, etc. I took it to a mechanic and the code it gave was cylinder 4 misfire and intake control valve solenoid. I changed the coil packs, spark plug and the intake valve solenoid and the problem went away. Also make sure there’s no valve cover gasket leak that causes oil to get inside of the coil packs and spark plugs and over flood the valves with puddles of oil. It’s a $900 fix.

Hello all, Was able to get an official diagnosis on my 2012 Legacy over the weekend. Turns out to be a bad torque converter as well. Dealership quotes the replacement at $1800. Subaru needs to order a mass recall on this issue. Too many of us are experiencing this known issue. Could be life threatening as anyone can rear end us when our cars die randomly.

2010 Legacy owner here.. exact same thing started happening this month and guess what? its 2020 and the 10 year extended CVT warranty started from the date of first purchase (must have been sometime in 2010/09 we got the car used it only has 80 000 kms on it) I am going into subaru today to see if we are still under warranty but we never recieved a letter notifying us of the extended warrranty (or the issue with CVT) And if we are BARELY outside of warranty i really have no recourse but to sue them. This is a life threatening problem and my car has only 80 000 kms on it. I cant believe a company like subaru is screwing its customers like this

Well the culprit was the torque converter. It is being replaced by the dealership. It seems to be a known issue as I searched through the forums on the same subject. I am wondering if there should be a recall if enough people have issues with the CVT. Pros: Above-average fuel economy; simple, efficient power delivery; you'll never feel a shift. Cons: Takes some getting used to; can cause engine to drone during hard acceleration. Summary: If you're shopping for a car and you see the term "CVT," it stands for "continuously variable transmission." Alright, so what does that mean? Let's start with the basics. A CVT is a lesser-known alternative to conventional automatic transmissions. You operate it just like a regular one -- slide the shift lever from "P" to "D" and off you go -- but after that, well, it gets a little complicated. Ordinary automatics have a certain number of gears that are referred to as "speeds," hence "6-speed automatic," for instance. The reason is that each gear is only good for a certain vehicle speed, so if you want to keep accelerating, the transmission has to shift up through the gears -- first 1, then 2 and so forth. But a continuously variable transmission technically doesn't have gears at all; rather, it's like having one magical gear that's variable across all driving situations. That's why you don't feel shifts from one gear to the next like in a normal car. All you'll notice is changes in engine speed, or RPM: higher for acceleration, lower for cruising. Here's where it gets really weird. The CVT orders up the most efficient engine speed for each situation and keeps it constant even if the vehicle is accelerating rapidly. In a passing scenario, for example, the CVT knows the optimal engine speed is pretty high (typically around 5,000 RPM on the tachometer), so it zings you up there as soon as you floor the gas. But as you pile on vehicle speed (50 miles per hour, 55 mph, 60 mph), the engine speed remains exactly the same! There's no "running through the gears" like with a regular automatic, no rising crescendo as the passing gear nears its limit. Instead, you hear a steady hum -- or, less charitably, a dull drone -- while the engine works efficiently at that sustained high speed. It's definitely a different way of putting power to the pavement, but it's also an increasingly popular one. Nissan has used CVTs across its lineup for years, and stalwarts such as Honda and Subaru have followed suit. What it means to you: CVTs tend to squeeze out some extra miles per gallon, especially in urban driving. That could tip the scales if you're comparing, say, the CVT-equipped 2013 Nissan Altima (27 mpg city/38 mpg hwy) to the 2013 Hyundai Sonata (24 mpg city/35 mpg hwy). But the real question is whether you like the way that CVTs respond to your right foot -- a question only a thorough test drive can answer.

My 2011 Outback with 69K just started doing this same thing. It is not bad....yet. It seems to only happen when the vehicle is cold and I come to a more abrupt stop. It started last week with just a shudder when I stopped. Now when it happens it stalls the vehicle. Was it worth the $1100? Or if you had to do it all over again would you just unload the car? Of course this is happening just outside the warranty!

Ive just got a 2011 Legacy and its CVT is nothing like Toyota or Lexus, which I found both to be smooth in operation. Its taking me days to get used to the Subaru and its quirky transmission. It varies between being quick off the mark with little accelerator pressure, to not doing anything at all when I put my foot down, then catching up few seconds later with revs flying high. Also find it lumpy, as in not smooth and feeling hesitant as I’m moderately applying foot to the pedal to get up to town speeds, 30 40 mph etc if I dont put my foot down hard enough, which then gives me too much power. Anyone else notice this ? Any way to resolve it ? Toyota has an E CVT which works miles better.

Yeah... I have the 2010 Legacy 2.0L n.a and having excatly the same problems like yours with the like "nothing at all" when pressed gas pedal. Have kept resetting ECU or the idle relearn methods and it does magic for just a few days (I mean the car flys whenever gas pedal inputs) but problem comes back again and again. Only quite recently I had some issues with misfiring, and after changing plugs and coils, it seems the problem goes away, and the stalling also goes away somehow. But now only experiencing intermittent rough idles when engine still not fully warmed up and the car will even shakes or vibrates for few seconds. When put into N gear it will disappear immediately. Could that also be Torque converter issue? Next is to clean up the EGR valve to see how it goes...

I had a very good feeling this was the torque converter cause I remember this being an issue way back with dealers trying to fix it before it became a problem. My 2011 legacy does this very same thing and going to take it to the dealer tomorrow. However I know for a fact this is it due to it's nature of stalling only in drive at a stop after cold starts but after a while the shifts warm up and it's ok. I'm only testing it but I'm actually down shifting it with the manual mode into 1st at complete stops to affirm this. Otherwise, had the throttle body cleaned and no codes (so no MAF) and acceleration is normal.

Here’s what mine does so when I do a hard stop or uphill it’ll kinda start shaking like it is gonna die and I’d j let off the brake sometimes it won’t. And after it’s runninf for awhile it doesn’t do it. Is the common theme for this torque converter? I have no check engine lights on and runs fine otherwise

This isn't the only Subaru problem. How about burned out lights, air conditioning almost stalling the car at take off. My wife has an out back and we are on a first name basis with the police because of lights out! Just fix the problems Subaru and we will keep coming back. Ps. I will buy a Crosstrek STI if you build one🤗

@@markgoldenberg870 no idea. Thats what he told me. I never checked for coolant mixing at the time because 40k miles early I had the heads done due to the timing belt tensioner going. Mine was idling rough too! Now I bought a saab-aru. Ran great for about 6k miles. Started shutting off with the cel coming on briefly. I had no idea what was going on but it got worst. The problem was a catalytic converter and both 02 sensors. I bought after market and lasted 100 miles. Yes 100 miles. 700 bucks out the door. I had to buy oem catalytic converter and oem 02 sensors which are from an sti on the saab. 2300 bucks!!!!! Now runs like a new car!
