Review: 2012 Subaru Legacy | When The Legacy Lost Its Personality

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Recently, Subaru's cars have not been living up to the brand's legendary reputation. With a dumbing down of special models like the WRX, and canceling of the STi, one can only wonder where this began. I think it was with the 4th generation Legacy, which is the subject of today's review. Enjoy!

I have this gen Subaru Legacy - but avoided the 4 cylinder and CVT. I got the 6-cylinder (HG) engine with the 5-speed automatic. It is pretty fast, gets above 20 mpg on average, and is super reliable. Now has 145,000 miles with AWD great for climbing our mountain with snow. It was among the last powertrains to have the 5-speed automatic because in a couple of years they redesigned the car again and put the H6 with a CVT as well. No head gasket issues with this engine - the H6 is rock solid in comparison. If you feel all the imperfections in the road it probably means that the oil in the suspension has leaked out. That happened on my Subaru for the rear suspension at 130,000 miles. I could replace it for about $2000 but just deal with it as it is minor.

I have this same vehicle but mine does have temp gauge where your mpg one is. it is reasonabley fast even with the 4 cylinder. it can hold it's own on the highway. the engine is peppy enough for me to dart around in city driving. this is also the generation where head gaskets were not a recall issue. i agree that subaru has gotten more boring and doesn't to enthusiast anymore. for me this is a good car with some luxury options (leather, heated seats, AWD, great sound system) with decent reliability safety and running costs. mine does burn oil but that my only complaint at 154k miles

Great review 👍 I can agree that this car does look bland when compared to the 4th gen and the CVT does dull things quite a bit... Fun fact, I actually used to have one of these as a 2014 CVT Wagon (Base 2.5L) and it did look much better, wasn't a bad daily driver and the interior looked decently modern and well built at the time (mine had a small infotainment screen as opposed to the basic radio)... Age hasn't made this car look better and it does look and feel quite dated (as you said) and the CVT's have proven to be pretty problematic... I'm potentially looking at getting another Liberty/Legacy but this time, it will be a 4th gen manual...

I saved tons of money driving my 2010 Legacy 2.5i - great gas mileage, the car eats snow, and cheap insurance costs. I have 235,000 miles on it and my kid has it in college. Not many problems with it (no blown head gasket you mentioned). I used Mobil 1 full synthetic oil with a Mobil 1 oil filter and changed it every 10,000 miles. The cloth interior was trashed so I got new Katskin pleather interior which made it look good enough for my son to not be too embarrassed driving it. I loved that car but it is just about done!

Cvts get a bad rap. These are made in house by Subaru with their lineartronic cvts. I hate the traditional automatic especially the four speeds because even though they're reliable, they gear hunt when you're going up the mountain. Also you're like everybody else with Subarus and you mentioned the head gasket issue. But you need to learn which years they had issues with the head gaskets. This model did not have that issue and it was due to the coating on the head gasket would wear and would cause leaking. Even Hondas in certain Toyotas had issues with head gaskets. But people always mention head gaskets with Subaru not knowing that the issue is not a common issue with all years. I've had many Subarus turbo non-turbo different years new and old. This car was by far my favorite to drive as far as comfort, room, and the fact that I can get to LA to Sacramento and still have gas left over. The CVT is also nice for climbing Hills as it doesn't hunt for Gears and you get your torque right off the bat. You could pass someone going up the mountain and it does not feel like you're in a 4-cylinder. Not to mention you can drive through some pretty deep powder in this thing. I've had a 2018 legacy, and I like this one better.

Subaru has never had to take a bail out unlike most the other big time manufacturers not even in the hard times. It's almost like the cars they produce sells 🤔, it's almost like they know the customer's wants and needs 🤔, it's almost like they are a fair amount cheap than the competition an most people dont require a Mercedes Benz quality interior to get from point A to B 🤔, it's almost like they go better in areas with harsher road an weather conditions 🤔, it's almost like they are bought by adult's that can make good an reasonable, logical, an economical decision an not a youtuber that multiple times says it's a good car (but I don't like it) 😂 an you should listen to me in this video an not the millions of satisfied subaru owners 🤔!?!?! The manufacturer has never lost its personalitie or successful recipe of 4 doors + flat 4 + symmetrical all wheel drive on the legacy. Just because you don't like some body lines, fabric, an plastic don't try to turn people off from them.

Update: my best friend who owns this car has had to put in $4k in repairs over the past few months, and now he’s selling it at a huge loss. So not only do I not like it… turns out it’s just straight up a bad car.

You wasn't talking about that very specific one don't play it off like you was, you were talking about that generation an every one past that as a whole. Your friend mostly got over charged on parts an labor an was paying for the previous owners lack of care and maintenance sadly that's the world we live in, again not the cars fault or rather that very specific cars fault since your putting that way. Yet even in your reply you couldn't argue not even one of my valid points. This speaks the lack of your knowledge about the model an manufacturer and its now obvious you have pulled your information an finds from a group sample of 1 out of 1 😂!!!

Trust me coming from a Subaru owner, the cvt and newer gen Subarus are umm… if you want a new Subaru get an Outback or a Brz. Otherwise get a mazda

It funny you spoke about Toyota cause they are heavily influencing Subaru choices since the collaboration in the BRZ and the Toyota version of it. SMH Subaru grow a pair or continue to let Toyota run you out just my opinion
