Well. Not really. There was a recession, high unemployment, an intractable inflation problem that continued for years, and a general feeling of malaise and decline in America. That is what the song is addressing. Along with Dennis DeYoungs’ longstanding marriage. So nostalgia is a disguise and THESE are the best of times

Local city magazine had a feature article 50 best rock songs of all time where a band could only have 1 of their songs on the list anyway Styx made the list with the song too muchvtimr hands i think voters missed the boat there wow what a timeless amazing song right here from Illinois band

Styx has an uncommon voice effect: they collectively form a voice as if it was a synthesized one. I don't understand how they do that, but it seems to me that it's mainly the voices of J.Y. and Shaw in falsetto. I have seen that same effect only in Queen and ELO. Does anybody know if that effect has a name?

DDY is often forgotten as one of the great rock voices of his era. People recall Perry, Gramm, Bowie, Cronin, and Mercury but DeYoung belongs among those greats.

Emotions what we feeling the last few years i could harp on endless list about the 80s what it meant a different World the world was alive whoever got to see it The Best Of Times the 80s another dimension portal league scale class planet the 80s i would go in a heartbeat or my spirit guide me and never want to leave and the 80s can go on forever that be a wish dream fantasy fairytale cause bein a kid was best toys cartoons food entertainment we only had 2channels VCR, Video Games etc etc

I believe that somewhere in the world, there are people who feel the same emotions that I feel when I listen to masterpieces like this song.

This song so vividly reminds me of going to my high school’s football games on Friday nights, just to hang out behind the bleachers the whole time with my friends instead of actually watching the games. Truly the best of times. Nostalgia is such a strange feeling.

Absolutely true! Behind the bleachers was a tree filled gully we called "Japan". We partied there and hung out and as long as we made it home, our parents didn't care. I'm 65 now and I know that the music of the 70,80 90 was the best! The weed also! You did not have the terror of Fentanyl as well. Life teaches us to appreciate and cherish our friends and family. When they are gone, we have to wait until were in Heaven to enjoy our great reunion.

I so remember this anthem as a “coming of age” young adult circa 1981. I can’t listen without a lump in my throat, and a dull ache in my chest for that most wonderful time of my life!!! ❤️🙏❤️

THIS is the band Styx that I will always remember, making this amazing beautiful music and with all the original members

I was born in ‘79 - so please forgive my opinion that most ’80’s rock is synth heavy trash. Tommy Shaw and James Young are very competent rock guitarists that I will always respect immensely, however.

I had watched a mini-series for A Tale of Two Cities and read the book just before or after hearing this song for the first time and I always associated it with the French Revolution and thought of that show, which sucked because I love the song but couldn't stop myself from associating it with decapitations (It was the Best of Times; it was the worst of times). Almost 40 years later I have something more current to associate it with -- and not as bloody.

Omg, roller skating was my religion.

I have to admit, it was, the Pieces of Eight, my first concert in US. My first concert in my life and my first group that I ever saw live, in concert. What a show it was. Everything smelled like cannabis, we were young and full of life and had so much fun at the concert. No, I didn't try anything that night, but enjoyed the show, the lights and the music. What an incredible time it was, the 80s, the music and the crowd, all having fun and enjoying music together for the first time and yes, I bought my first Rock tshirt. What an amazing experience and memories.

They don't make em like this anymore. You won't find any music like this in 2023. God I miss the 80's!!!

I had this 45 vinyl when this first came out back in '81. I remember I was in 5th grade, and I met my first girlfriend at the roller rink where they would play this great song. I keep thinking about this song lately. In light of how horrible and dystopian everything is nowadays, those truly were the best of times. Love Styx💖

This is Australia 2019, i am 56 years of age and i remember when one of my first girlfriends and were together this song was playing and it was a very exciting time in our lives, because it was of our first love, and the music was fantastic and this was the music that made our love even more comportment in these days.I still listen to music of this era, and it does not really matter from which country you are from this song is very important to you youth and be proud of it.

Just got home from watching Styx, Foreigner, and John Waite. Took me back to a simpler time in my life 🙌

This was STYX at it's best of times. At the apex of their collaborations, the best line-up of musicians that sang to me on my younger years (I'll be 60 in three months), Dennis DeYoung, Tommy Shaw, the Panozzo brothers John and Chuck and James Young. This song brings some of the best memories I've ever had.The best of music to soothe the anguish and pains of the worst of times we're living today. God bless us all!

I’ll never get sick of listening to this song. Styx would have to be one of the most under rated groups.

I am 13 and I love these songs my dad always played them for me and I am so grateful because this and many other songs will forever be in my memory because they got me through everything literally. I wish I was alive to witness all these songs when to band was young I went to a concert and it was great but my dad said it was always better when they were younger

Nope- 2022 Baby. Happy Birthday To me. Grew up in Chicago, where Styx is from. This was also our HS Prom song 1985. Those truly were the best of times!!🤟

Those were the best of times! Their music lives on and is iconic and WOW POSITIVE! no ripping on ex's no slurs no PC crap

Even though the world is in turmoil and turning upside down, this song gives me hope to face the problems of today. Saw Styxx when I was 17 and will always remember that concert. They are timeless!

I just realized how much the music of Styx defined my teens and 20's in the 70's. What an awesome time to party down.
