I also met him, Friday of Labor Day weekend, 1975 !!! Talked to him and the drummer personally just after a short practice session !!! Saw him in Nashville, maybe 1999 or the next year. He played a Special Session for the people that had joined the Quixtar online sales company that was started by Amway, wow, almost couldn't remember, L O L !!!

At first I thought him a Roger waters "This is my band" kind of a man but I never really knew what a showman and entertainer he is. Kilroy was here is so disliked and I guess rightly so. But it's so clear he needed a good lyricist and writer at his disposal, someone like Kerry Livgren. Paradise theater was shat on by reviewers as well for the same reasons. The albums lack in any real depth or meaning so they say but my god is there talent there in that man it's just a little misplaced. I personally love both of those albums. Maybe Styx shouldn't of been judged and reviewed by prog rock standards???

I came here for this awesome rendition of this classic song in the midst of the spring of 2020 COVID-19 lockdown. This song has never been more true. "The headlines read that these are the worst of times. I do believe it's true. When people lock their doors and hide inside. Rumor has it, it's the end of Paradise...but I know, with the world turned upside down, Baby, I know...You'll always be around. The best of times, are when I'm alone with you...". As I sit here locked down with my wife, this is so true and it gives me hope. Thanks, Dennis. Your voice is timeless. So is your message.

DANG, HE SOUNDED FABULOUS THEN TOO. Having just listened to the 1996 live "Paradise" version of this 1981 hit, it sounds to me in the same key, and the arrangement on every instrument is as close as it can get. SUPERB and EXCELLENT group put together here - the vocals sound like the young dudes in original form. This one is even a tad bit more zingy. I wish they could all perform for another 50 years. This song will never die.

The perception that Dennis is somehow just a wimpy crooner who doesn't rock is simply a bad narrative started by that stupid documentary on VH1. DDY was the main creative force in Styx. Yes, Tommy Shaw's arrival began a productive musical tension that would only last a half dozen or so years. Tommy added nothing to tunes written and created by Dennis. But if you listen to everything that Tommy wrote, you hear Dennis adding his own touches to make the songs even better. DDY was a co-producer for every Styx record. Shaw's Styx is not the same without Dennis. Lawrence Gowan may have a spinning keyboard stand, but vocally he is light years from Dennis. In 2010, DDY decided that if Styx weren't coming to him, he'd recreate his own Styx with new versions of Tommy and James Young. Not only do these players look like stunt doubles, they sound and play as well if not a tad better. Proving that Dennis DeYoung is not only a creative genius, he's also a musical director who can out-Styx the band who currently owns the name. This video of "Best of Times" is a musical celebration. It validates all of the decisions DeYoung made. From "Babe" to "Kilroy" and Glenn Burtnick. Dennis is no longer the maniacal dictator from "Behind The Music". He is having the last laugh and he's apparently having a lot of fun too.

A great part about NOT living in Los Angeles anymore, for me, is that when a performance comes to town and you want to see it, you can usually get a ticket. Great shows in LA sellout. I saw both this rendition of Styx, with Dennis, and the other one, with the other surviving band mates, Tommy & James while living in Orlando, 10+ years ago. Both were great shows. Dennis has always had a theatrical side. Styx was my first rock concert growing up. The Forum, in Inglewood CA (Los Angeles). I was in high school.

Just watched the Dennis D concert in LA from 3 years back. Looks like the rest of the band has been replaced. Dennis D. Is Styx. What a show. I have seen Styx without Dennis. Now I have seen Dennis who is Styx. Please come to Ann Arbor when all this craziness is over. Styx is back!!!

My GOD...that voice.. Dennis DeYoung's voice NEVER degraded as he got older... as so many other rock stars have. If not the best voice, it's tied for 1st place. He's a true professional.

DDY has another trait that Gowan et al lack...he always connected with his audience each night. As a veteran of 4 Styx concert tours and 6 events I can honestly say other than Freddie Mercury Dennis was the most charismatic front man I have ever experienced in my 60+ years.

nothing better then the harmonies of Dennis and Tommy. And by the way Tommy is every bit as good today if not better then the years gone by. Both very good as they are today. Never better then who they would be together again. But that won't happen unfortunately.

@@flintrock8433 Do check your facts. Dennis in part is why Styx is who they are today. Together Dennis, JY and Tommy are phenomenal! Separate they are still very good and I enjoy both sides very much! One last tour together would be amazing!

@@flintrock8433 Please explain how Dennis screwed Styx? Babe? Their only #1 hit and Song of the Year of 1980? Mr. Roboto? A #3 hit and the single sold over 1 MILLION copies? Kilroy Was Here? An album that sold over 2.5 MILLION copies and spawned 2 TOP SIX singles? Yeah, that is REALLY screwing them. 99.9% of bands would kill for that kind of screwing. Tommy and JY continue to demean these songs and yet happily cash the royalty checks that made them rich. You are a moron.
