LOVE this video and love your commentary!!! This problematic but wonderful show gave me so much joy. For the record, I am an ER doc and that policy stuff is 0% factual: we see everybody, immediately, without question and it does NOT matter how they arrived to the ER ("cop drops" are actually very common) we would never turn anybody away.

It's possible that they're misinterpreting and exaggerating the policies that have to do with where ambulances are directed to take patients, with adult gunshot victims being driven to the nearest hospital with a trauma center instead of the nearest hospital in general or being directed to bypass certain hospitals if their trauma centers are at capacity. That scene was so jarring and uncomfortable in how it relied on the villainy of everyone around Will, including the wounded child, to make him out to be a saint. blackyouthproject.com/guest-post-why-some-chicago-hospitals-wont-treat-victims-of-gun-violence/ www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-biz-hospital-bypass-diversion-ambulances-20190926-6gt4gv4pgbhwni5z2qx23nrcqa-story.html

Many chicago hospitals do refuse to treat gun shot patients. blackyouthproject.com/guest-post-why-some-chicago-hospitals-wont-treat-victims-of-gun-violence/ Many Chicago hospitals have recently been accused of abusing "bypasses" where they tell ambulances to take victims to another hospital , because there either aren't enough resources or staff on hand. www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-biz-hospital-bypass-diversion-ambulances-20190926-6gt4gv4pgbhwni5z2qx23nrcqa-story.html The first source is six years old so things could've changed, but the fact is many people have died and continue to die in Chicago, because they were told to go to another hospital farther away.

@@elizazerbe7784 I can't speak for Chicago from personal experience (I'm in Philly), but transferring gunshot victims to trauma centers requires stabilizing them prior to shipping them out. By law, no one could get turned away bleeding at the door if they arrived to the ER in that kid's condition. Ambulances taking longer trips is a different issue though, you are right.

My personal favourite moment was when, while Lito was preparing the drinks for Sun, he was supposed to be doing an interview for this deeply emotional and difficult role. So Sun, in his place, describes just how alone and vulnerable she is, and it's just beautiful because it is through Lito that Sun can learn to be vulnerable.

this scene made me feel that Sun was often used only when they needed characters to do martial arts, which is a shame. Even on the sheer abilities side, one thing they could have used her for was her business background, to sort through the documents and corporate structure while hunting BPO for instance.

I’m sure Sun’s time in prison is less unbearable seeing as she has 7 ways to still feel the freedom of living despite her reality, and Wolfgang in his self isolation never really got that isolation with 7 people constantly having his back. Whether he wills it or not. That’s the beauty of their dynamic.

@@Vekcrazah oh, absolutely, that aspect was really touching. I really like the character overall, emotionally her arc is well handled and I really like her presence and performance - and indeed the fact that a relative loner does find the sensates as a way to nurture her emotional side is really cool. On the more action/plot side of things though, I feel like using her business experience would help the fantasy of 8 people sharing their skills. And that aspect is important too, even if it isn't as important (for instance Capheus is a really cool character despite not bringing all that much on the skill side of things- even though I find his season 2 plotline quite messy).

And then commenting on the societal pressure Rajan feels, has felt his entire life probably, to divorce Kala and to deny feelings he develops for Wolfgang too. And at one point they hook up without Kala, who would be on blockers at the time for reasons, and that's weirdly beautiful.

I truly thought they showed Wolfgang and Rajan had developing feelings. At the house, while waiting for Kala, they seemed to connect. Rajan watched Kala in Wolfgang's arms then later how they sat on either side of Kala and would touch each other during the feast. He let them ride together in the backseat of the car to Naples (not sure my hubby would be so understanding lol) and let's not forget their reactions to "it's complicated" while introductions were made to Felix. Also, at the wedding, they hugged and hung out. There were subtle clues they had developing feelings.

Will should have been an ex-cop, who quit because he tried to rat on his coworkers. It would explain his skills, and have some really great interactions between him and Nomi. Nomi can get information, but she doesn't know where to look or what she's looking at. It would make his relationship with his dad 1000% more interesting, give an easy space to say ACAB but also that we get brainwashed into lionizing cops, and would just give a more real discussion of things, where he continually points out rights violations done to and by the cluster.

Isnt the point of the sense8 concept that were all connected, regardless of race, sexuality, or power structure? Having someone at the top of the power structure within the cluster drives that point home. Id rather see Will as a bad/dirty cop who struggles with the racist aspects of u s police (and even his own prejudices) because being a sense8 enlightens him. That feels more compelling than having Will start as an ex cop because all cops are racist

  • @ellentheeducator

@@lifefindsaway7875 The thing is, I'd be somewhat fine with that story, if we're willing to have members of the cluster be bad people. But like, they are not presented that way. Even Wolfie, the nastiest of the cluster, is still practically a cinnamon roll even before the rebirth. If they did do as you suggested, it would be a fine story, but would have to be a very different story, one that prioritizes the growth and realization of a cop to the fact that his profession is inherently monstrous. Or would have to be much like Guardians of the Galaxy, except worse because the Guardians are kinda compelling because they're assholes but are also deeply and powerfully oppressed by power structures. These ideas are good and all but... eh. I would have less interest watching it with that story than just a better version of the story already present tbh

There's the fact that everything is energy, a hologram, there are probable parallel realities. I don't want to say that this show cured my Caribbean mom's homophobia/transphobia but it helped a lot. It wasn't until I was an adult that I realised her beliefs about things like that. I'm ace, so before I realised that, I just kept waiting for the day i would feel physical attraction when i met the right person. I'm nearly 30 now and it's really never going to happen Lol. Anyway I heard her say some things that shocked me because I didn't expect that kind of ugliness to come out of my favorite person in the world. I just stood there staring set her and stuttering, like how did i not know this about you. The subject just had never come up before. I was so disappointed in her that I wanted to cry... Yeah I did cry. I tried to have a conversation about it but she shut me down and that was that. Then the most hilarious thing happened, her 2 sisters who live in Canada came to visit, and I was looking for something to watch and we picked this show because it sounded interesting. That wasn't awkward at all Lol! They loved it which shocked my mom because they were raised together and she assumed they had the same beliefs. If they ever did, they changed a long time ago because they didn't bat an eyelash. I thought I was going to get it for watching that with them when they left but mom was curious. What did my aunts know that she didn't? She binged the whole thing in a few days and was so upset when it was canceled. Anyway, she went from Sense8 to the letter 'L' to a bunch of other LGBTQ movies. She was baffled because these were just people living their lives just a little differently than her. She may not fully understand but she respects, and no longer fears or denigrates. Live and let live, she says nowadays and I'm so happy.

It's about our best traits as humans. This show gives me hope when it feels like living is too hard, it makes me feel again when I'm numb and tired. Even seeing the clips in this video made me tear up. Sense8 has a soul and it's absolutely beautiful. Thank you for the incredible video ❤

This is the show I re-watch when I need to believe in humanity again. And I cry. I cry a lot. At the sad scenes, and, even more so, at the happy ones. I cried many times throughout this video. I don't know what a new show would have to do to surpass this for me, in my category of "restores faith in humanity". Sense8 is just so unique, so far and beyond, despite the problems, one I would've mentioned was the moral ambiguity in regards to violence, like, killing guards is no biggie, but attempting to kill a sense8 is horror. But...nobody is perfect, just like their characters. So I'll stick to *wholesome* . Because that's what it is.

I agree that shooting the Whispers with a rocket launcher was very corny, but I was so excited because I saw it as a callback to that one moment when Kala says to Wolfgang that 'the jury is still out on whether a rocket launcher solves ANY problem'. I think I will forever be heartbroken that this show didn’t get more seasons. I’m so glad they got to wrap it up as best as they could with the finale, but it wasn’t the same. It was such an amazing, diverse show that felt so so important, despite its flaws. I connected with it in a much deeper way than I think I have with any other show. With Will I feel like if they had made him a cop that had decided to quit because he joined the force to do good and because of his dad and then realized how broken the system was, it could have been a better way to still get what they wanted from him being a cop. We could have a lot of the same character traits (his tactical skills would still make sense, his knowledge of crime/cop stuff, and it would enhance his sense of justice really). He could even take advantage of some of his old contacts/team for some of the researching stuff (have his old partner be someone who wants to leave but feels stuck for some reason like blackmail or debt or whatever idk so he’s willing to help?). Sure some things would have had to be difference but it would have been a better way to do it I think.

Sense8 honestly changed me as a person. When it came out I was still in highschool and had a lot of issues around anxiety and depression. The overwhelming message of love and compassion conquering all things gave me so much hope at the time and the show still holds such a special place in my heart. The cop stuff with Will is definitely my biggest complaint with the show. It is incredibly tone deaf and frustrating to see which is why I usually don’t watch season one anymore. I find Will much more tolerable when he is not in that role even though like you said, the show really tries to not let you forget that he is a former cop. I do wish we had gotten at least one more season though... the plans for future seasons that the writers talked about on twitter all sounded amazing.

I was nervous to watch your video because I have such love for it that I think someone unsympathetically tearing it down would have felt very painful! But I loved it! You were critical where it was merited and ultimately empathetic to the narrative and its creators. Definitely motivating me to do a rewatch. I think the thing that always sticks with me is how well it manages to balance the dynamics between the character such that everyone feels like they have a strong set of relationships, and you have an instinctive sense of who will show up in any given time, not just for crises but also for emotional support. In some moments, the main 8 almost feel like different aspects of the same character they flow so seamlessly together and God, just, what a good show. Artistic ambition goals.

It shows their childhood, their teenage years, and their adult lives as heroes and villains.

This was one of my favorite shows of all time because it combined so many genres that I love, and after watching all the parodies of The Matrix, I loved how they made Lito's filming scenes with wires and guns sooo over the top but also very much in the Wachowski wheelhouse. In some writeup I read, the cast mentioned that spending so much time traveling and filming helped bond them all the more, and I think it makes the show all the better for it. Creating that kind of cast chemistry wouldn't work otherwise, and that shot when the cluster all gathers around Sun to protect her gets me every time and encapsulates the essence of this show and how much they all felt like family.

The way I generally pitch Sense8's collaboration to friends is "JMS is substance over style and the Wachowski's are style over substance. This has both." I actually got into the series BECAUSE of JMS, having been a huge fan of B5 and enjoying his work on comics (he started great runs on Spider-man and Thor, and was one of a half dozen writers brought in to revamp Wonder Woman over the decades, but kept getting into arguments with Marvel/DC and switching to the other company. Still, his take on a grown-up adult Spiderman is one of my favorites and he wrote the story for the first Thor movie.) Oh, he was also co-creator of the original She-ra series. Anyways, JMS' writing is defined by three things: characters driving the story and being changed by their choices; a thoroughly planed out plot arc and setting rules; and excellent philosophical speeches and vernacular jokes...while being a little hit and miss in between. I think we can absolutely see both of the first two in Sense8 (it was planned out for five seasons in advance and you can see how Lela's 'sensate homeland' and the Archipelago could have been slowly developed instead of the crash course in the finale) but I can only point to a handful of lines of dialogue that I can tell he wrote. In general, one of his weakest aspects as a creator lies in a reliance upon dialogue and acting to convey the story and emotion. Babylon 5 just isn't visually dynamic (outside of the at-the-time cutting edge CGI which incorporated physics in a way we wouldn't see again until BSG) and is shot more like a stage play than anything else. That generally means that what stands out the most are the quiet conversations and fierce debates between characters and the grand pontificating of principal (especially by Peter Jurasik and Andreas Catsultas) rather than action scenes or set pieces. I will say for anyone that is contemplating watching B5...the first season is widely regarded as the weakest, is the most episodic and lays a lot of ground-work for later seasons. I really can't recommending skipping it as there are a lot of plot threads in it that take two or three more seasons to reach fruition, and there are some absolute gems. However, it is a slow burn and the show really picks up from season 2 on. Aside from it's rich story and world-building, more than any other show I've watched, its characters transform and grow throughout the series. However, as the series was planned out from the beginning, its not a sudden twist or new season adjustment, but a clear, organic transition resulting from their own choices. (Representation wise: it's not great. Made in '94 with a mostly white cast and the one attempt at bisexual character was limited to subtext by the studio. I can still love it even if my worldview has considerably widened since I was a teen.)

So i haven't watched this show, but i don't mind spoilers so having loved your bly manor and haunting of hill house videos (that i won't watch bc they are spooky), i decided to watch this video - and have come to the conclusion that i have to watch sense8. I don't mind that i know what happens - i'll get to look forward to "that cool scene that was showed in the video"! Your videos are so entertaining and thoughtful, and have kept me company during my worst mental health crisis ever, so thank you for doing what you do, and finally convincing me to watch sense8. (Also if you haven't watched it yet - you might like Black Sails!)

This is the only show I've ever seen depicting pure love, understanding others not despite but because of their nature, and celebrating it. For the first time, I didn't remember the plot just the feelings, and it was warm and wholesome

I love this show so much. I just realised that it's Sun and Mun. She sorts of shines brighter than him with the whole beating him in a tournament thing. So freaking cute. Edit : I just saw that you came to the same réalisation and that what I get for commenting before the end of the video.

As a DID system, this video was unbelievably strange to watch. It was simultaneously so similar to my experience 'I am also a we', 'multiplicity', how it feels to share your life so much with others, the sharing, the talking in your head, so much felt so much like us, it was wild. But also it was so different that every time I got comfortable fully relating, I was reminded that this is not a show about actual possible real-life things. Not sure if it was positive or negative. Maybe both.

This show made me cry more than just about anything I've ever watched, and you better believe my eyes are wet from watching this video essay. You always seem to find the balance of loving something while still examining how it could have been better - thank you so much for that and for all your hard work putting these together. Truly a tremendous and emotional watch

I have DID, formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder, and this show meant so much to me. The way I experience it is like having a family of individual siblings sharing one family computer (aka the body). The themes that this show brought out were intensely relatable because of that. Feeling like you’re going crazy, getting a handle on communicating with each other, strengthening the ability to go in and out of, or even share, control of the body, but mostly in the internal family it creates. We even have our own individual skills and perspectives that show up when that person is present. It’s not often that DID is represented in the media, and if it is it’s like 99% likely to be a bad horror trope with a ~spooky killer alter~ twist ending, but this show was different. I know the show isn’t actually about DID, but having and being an alter is very othering, and hard to understand for singlets, but I feel stronger for it, and this show really highlighted the power that comes from a situation like mine. I’ve always got backup lol

its been a while since i originally watched sense8, all the way through in fact. i couldnt tell you much of the plot, but i do remember some amazing sequences, and coming away with an overall feeling of warmth. your video essay really puts into words what i loved about the show (and what i felt meh on), and i need to go back and rewatch it immediately! (also i live in berlin and it is so funny and weird to see it depicted on screen. lets just say that apartment building from the first episode is. not that. and i often bike past the place where wolfgang blows up that car with the rocket launcher, and *everyone* would have heard that)

Also living in Berlin. The place (where Wolfgang blows up the car) is so very public. There is a train line that crosses a bridge there and a huge office building with a glass front on the other side. There'd have been so many eye witnesses. On the other hand it is pretty cool to see that place occasionally and smiling with a bit of nostalgia for the show.

Great Video, love Sense8 Honestly the only thing that annoyed me (other than the cancellation) was some of the things in the finale which were clearly intended to be introduced and drawn out in a third season which ended up being just dropped in without explanation. It just came across as unnecessary and the result of cramming already planned world building into too short a runtime. I just feel like the trinity mum thing and the chairman should've been left out and they should've focused on the things already established with the 2 hour limit they had. Still love it though. Such an unique and ambitious series that really shows and respects the diversity of our world.

I really liked this show for a while, although the "it's Tuesday" moments and details bothered me, it was full of creativity and cleverness that's hard to match. I do think the finale is kind of terrible, mostly because the helicopter explosion is egregiously anticlimactic, but it's hard to be too upset knowing what happened to the show. It's probably better off concluded than it would have been with just the ending of season 2.

Okay - here's the thing...I'm gonna watch 'Sense8' first, (unbelievable, yeah? I haven't seen it yet!), THEN I'm going to watch your video essay. I watched your essay on the 'Happy Death Day' movies first, and then I watched the movies. This had absolutely no impact on the extreme enjoyment I had watching these films. In fact, watching these movies became a more joyful and heart-warming experience because of your excellent essay (I watched them both on my birthday!). But. 'Sense8' is two full seasons. I may need to dive into its world first before viewing your essay. P.S.: Your essays are "drop whatever you're doing - there's a new video!" events. Thank you for all your hard work!

I'm super excited now to see this short-lived series, (that made me sad that they never got to season two). There's such a feeling of joy you give to your videos - joy in discussing these shows, and joy in immersing yourself into these shows. Thank you!

I just rewatched this show and also still cannot believe that this show was made and that we got a whole freaking ending-I can tell the way all of the storylines that were summed up quickly were meant to have been explored more thoroughly than they were and can you tell that I cannot get over this show ever and just want to rant about it forever? Edit: finished the video and am sobbing over how much I love this show with all of my heart-much like the people who created it, I think.
