"Our rights are not guaranteed by the world. We fight for them and have to protect them everyday because they can be taken away from us, if we don't pay attention to the world beyond our focus." - Nerdwriter
For me, the constant extreme closeups created a feeling of being "trapped" or stifled. The limited visual image makes the world very small, and I think that was the intention. Just a thought.
@fotheon-9955

Honestly to me the closeups got a bit anoying and predictable by the last episodes.
@Slavkod
6 жыл бұрын
well the handmades too, have those blinders, simmilar to the ones that horses have. And the point of those is to make your vission streamlined, to make you feel "trapped" the closeups seem to be there to make you feel like the character is feeling, to feel what its like to be oppresed in such a way. I dont know i didnt find it anoying, i found it to be interesting way to present a tottaly new world, from a 1st person perspective.

also, agree with Matthew, the DOF seems to have the purpose of creating of a feeling of being trapped, observed.
@Roberta_Trevino

Yes, it's very suffocating too. Even if it's repetitive, it's annoying for a reason. You're trapped and suffocating under the blurr. Just like Offred, you wish you could see more but can't. They can't read. They can barely listen into other's conversations. It's frustrating and I think that, to some extent, that's the point. Making the viewer just a bit frustrated.
I've got a confession to make: sometimes I turn Nerdwriter on just to listen to his soothing voice.

So an interesting fact about low apertures used in film making. Stanley Kubrick wanted to shoot a scene in the movie Barry Lyndon by candle light. So he contacted NASA and got ahold of a lens that had an aperture of 0.7. nerdwriter said 1.4 was razor thin, but it has nothing on trying to shoot at 0.7. I actually planned to do an informational video essay on the lens he used, and the interesting stories surrounding it.

I just finished the series last week, you couldn't have picked a better time to post this video! Thank you for sharing this amazing show with your audience :)
I have watched so many new shows/movies just because this guy´s perspective. The beauty he finds in every production.
A beautiful and frightening commentary . Thank you.
you are always so spot on, this stood out to me so much! The shallow depth of field (and everything else from colour grade to composition) was just breathtaking in how they used it as a visual story telling device. I can't remember another film or show that made me feel so intimately connected to a character's psyche more than the Handmaid's Tale. The show totally takes the book to the next level, cannot wait for season 2! Keep up the amazing videos as usual
WHY DOES YOUR WORK MAKE ME FEEL SO MANY FEELS!? Keep up the good work I enjoy your videos and can really feel your love and passion for film and story telling through each video.

Thank you for making this. I have had several conversations with people about why this show is not only important for its story but for film-making as well, as you illustrate some reasons for this beautifully. Amazing work as always.
As i was listening to your summation about the show and how it was filmed and watching the Clips that you chose I was really amazed and it brought me to tears. I've watched the show twice and you make me want to watch it again and again and look at it from a different perspective because I wasn't watching it through a cinemagraphic lens, as it were, I was just watching the show because I enjoyed it but now you make me want to watch it simply for the art that I seem to have taken for granted the first two times. So thank you for such a beautiful video that was so well thought out.
The handmade's tale was a terrific and terrifying watch for me.

Your best one yet! Fantastic episode!
This breakdown was unbelievably phenomenal! I come from the world of wedding photography and it getting into filmmaking and eventually, feature films, I knew that shallow depth of field as a tool I wanted to use, but now I totally understand why it's useful, and why I need to consider it's use… Not just for the point of it looking nice, but really understanding why am doing it that way!
I'm from the city in Canada this was filmed in! So cool to see it this way.

Awesome analysis as always man, you rock!
Well done Video love your passion in doing them
congrats for the engagement!! great video as always!
Congratulations on your engagement dude! That's awesome! Great video by the way, there seems to be this school of thought in contemporary "filmmaking" (by that I mean the DLSR uprising), in that "cinematic" is something that pertains to a "look". But I do agree with you that with Handmaid's Tale, really highlights the purpose of shallow depth (and rack focusing) as a device to enhance perspective and in turn, to serve the overall story.
I didn't realize that they'd made a show out of this horrifying book. I may have something new to watch now that I'mall caught up with Game of Thrones.
If you like shallow focus and narrow field of vision, especially shot entirely at feature length, check out Son of Saul. It even won the Oscar in 2016 for Best Foreign Film!
Congratulations for the engagement! You two look fabulous! Great video too as always :)
You are AMAZING, Mr Nerdwriter. I just love your ability to analyze things. And thank you so much for sharing!

Brilliant video!! ! I've been watching your videos for a while now and it's incredible to me how insightful you are; please keep up the great content!
I cant get enough of this show! well done video!
Unfortunately, shallow DOF is mostly used because of composition laziness. You'd see that, for DPs like Deakins and most notably Lubezki, most of their shots are deep focus. What makes their images great is not some fucking "bokeh" but it's their ability to use a color palette and a point of attention through guiding lines to ultimately send the right mood and message. To be honest, a cinematic image is not about shallow DOF. Yes, it can give a sense of tridimensionality, but what will make it cinematic are the artistic choices that ultimately make the frame.
@C.C.Cope220
6 жыл бұрын
Thomas d'Auteuil It's a tool like any other. The best cinematographers are the ones that try to master as many techniques as possible to have the largest tool box to tell each story. Unfortunately a lot of students films and indies overuse DOF and as you said because of composition laziness which means that anyone who wants and knows how to use DOF really has to justify its use since it has become so stigmatized.

One thing's for sure, after I watched this show I felt depressed for at least one full day. Couldn't eat, couldn't sleep, was very disturbed. It may be because this show has a LOT of resemblance to the current socio-politcal climate in America. This is nothing near the current socio-political climate in America. The writer originally based it off of Iranian women primarily with a healthy helping of the rest of the Middle East. If you're basing your entire belief on the whole abortion debate then you're either ignoring or are naive about the equality and freedom American/western women have. If the US comes under Sharia law then you can start making those kinds of comparisons.

the analogy between this show and the current political climate is extraordinary, almost prophetic. but know this. the revolution has to come from women. that is the only way of victory of those who choose diversity or exclusion, of those who choose sharing over hoarding, those who choose love over hate and fear

Did anyone else not like the show or how it looked? I quit after two episodes, I hated the constant voice over, the explaining of everything, the filter and yes even the shallow focus, but I understand that's my personal preference.

It was exceptionally painful to watch on many levels. My wife likes it but I can't help but find constant flaws in presentation and practicality of the situation. The suspension of disbelief needed to accept what the show offers as how things happened is too much for me to swallow. It would have been better just set in a world where such a state already existed and her friends were abducted than the contrivances required to up end the US government with a small minority of people who then establish a stable, if dystopian, society within a decade.
@cinnamon9390

I personally hate voice-over, it's almost always really stupid, but after a few episodes I kind of stopped noticing it. It's a strong cup of something, and it's probably not for everyone. Nothing wrong with not liking something most people like

I haven't watched the show, but I loved the book intensely. So I'm just weighing in to ask *burstofsanity:* have you enjoyed other dystopian tales? Because the plausibility of the Handmaid's Tale is on a par* with most other good ones. Is the genre just not your cup of tea? *Personally, I find it far more plausible than most; but it's certainly not less.

Holy Mackerel the Third Yes! Given its stylistic visuals the lack of visual storytelling really bothered me, I only watched the first episode. The attempt to transition from the present world to a dystopian future felt clumsily done too, it seemed to lack a nuanced understanding of how that might happen and the way humans would actually behave. Oh, and I couldn't tell the characters apart with the bonnets on xD
Why do people think this could actually happen in America because Trump, yet many of the same people that would say this, defend North Korea and Venezuela?

Great video! I really appreciate your analysis of shallow depth of field. The use of it as a crutch reminds me of film school when everyone was trying to achieve the look, and most of the films were composed entirely of close ups...hahaha. . I was frustrated with it at the time, because my favorite movies utilized deep depth of field and rich wide and master shots, but that required great set design and fantastic lighting which requires money and great skill, both of which we lacked at film school.
