The Last Bronycon: a fandom autopsy

Фильм және анимация

Due to the runtime this counts as a brony documentary and, as such, it is the best brony documentary.
Helpful timestamps:
Viewers with sensitivity should avoid: 29:21-29:31 flashing tiktok imagery, 37:13-37:39 bronies raving with strobes, 39:11-39:22 flashing gifs up on an LED screen, 48:28-48:30 a pony gets zapped with flashing magic, 1:09:38-1:11:10 some concert footage played behind credits.
Click your favorite popular brony fandom meme:
Sweetie Belle is a robot - / jennynicholson
Bright Eyes from My Little Pony Tales is, also, I guess a robot (really trying to get this one off the ground, would appreciate if you told your friends) - / jennyenicholson
Headcanon that Rainbow Dash plays bocce ball sometimes - / progamerjenny
Shipping Discord with Mayor Mare - / spider_jewel
They said the phrase “pasta button” in a late-season episode and you haven’t seen it but all the bronies keep knowingly talking about pasta button and laughing uproariously and you don’t really know what that’s all about - / spiderjewel
Pretending to be attracted to the ponies lol when you’re definitely not - / jennynicholsonvids

When the last eagle flies over the last crumbling mountain And the last lion roars at the last dusty fountain In the shadow of the forest though she may be old and worn They will stare unbelieving at the last Bronycon When the first breath of winter through the flowers is icing And you look to the north and a pale moon is rising And it seems like all is dying and would leave the world to mourn In the distance hear the laughter of the last Bronycon I'm alive, I'm alive When the last moon is cast over the last star of morning And the future has passed without even a last desperate warning Then look into the sky where through the clouds a path is torn Look and see her how she sparkles, it's the last Bronycon

I was always SO happy interacting with the Brony fandom as a little girl. I LOVED attending cons, I would always take pictures with adults in full cosplay, and they’d draw my clumsily made OC for me for free while having nice, innocent conversations about the show with me. I felt surrounded by friends. I met several “horse famous” people who were, with one exception, SO incredibly kind to me, and it meant the world to me as the weird, mentally ill, autistic, often outcast kid at school. In fact, Jenny, you and your friend made a significant contribution to that. I had made a very, VERY poor, clumsy attempt at a Derpy cosplay and I attended a FiW panel at Fiesta Equestria in Houston, Texas. I had worked so hard on it, and though it was poorly made, I got so many compliments, including several from y’all, who were so so cool and funny in my little eyes. You guys said I looked like an angel, and I didn’t get compliments like that outside of family often. So, despite all of the weird shit and the harmful impacts I later realized exposure to the worse parts of the fandom had on my brain, I’m still very grateful to the fandom, to YOU, for that. Thank you, everypony

I really appreciated talking about the fandom becoming increasingly exclusionary and hostile for children to be in. I feel like adults (and especially teenagers and young adults who are trying to prove their maturity) assume that children can't pick up on hostile vibes or, dare I say, can't tell when they are being objectified or when there's a skeezy vibe in the air. On the more banal end, they assume kids can't tell when something's an innuendo or super violent- I think it's because they know how much they've changed since their childhood that they assume kids are (or should be) cool with everything because they're too dumb to notice anything. I can remember being little and even if I didn't know why something felt weird I could tell something was up and felt uncomfortable and/or unwelcome. I ended up not watching or reading a lot of stuff that was officially for kids because there were weird adult jokes or hyper-sexualized characters in there. Also, not to be blunt but many children don't get a choice for when they're exposed to sexual stuff. Even on the most chill end of this- not even talking about more direct messed up shit- little girls know they're often vaguely sexualized by adults and hate it. I remember talking about it with my friends on the playground at age 9. I remember shopping with my mom at age 7 and being disgusted by how many pajamas and shorts had quasi-sexualized stuff like "kitten" and "princess" printed on the butt- or emblazoned with rhinestones that hurt to sit on. It took hours for us to find shorts that didn't have printing on the butt. And by age 12 odds are good you've been horribly catcalled by an adult man. Kids get a vibe for what objectification is long before they actually know what sex is. There should be spaces and media that they can enjoy without having to worry about that, and where adult fans should take a back seat.

We can tell and we know. It’s hard to find a place where teenagers and young kids, regardless of gender, can feel safe and like it’s something actually made for them without perverted corruption.

'Men are not socialized to recognize uncomplicated, unsexual fondness for a female character' This blew my goddamn mind because it's so true. Girls will hug each other and be openly bubbly and kind to one another, but men are expected to be very tough and serious with one another. And so when a woman acts kindly to us, our wires get crossed and we relate that behavior to the closest thing that our minds have been allowed to grasp: 'Oh, she must be sexually attracted to me'. That's honestly a large part of why MLP appealed to some men non-sexually as well; it was like our own little universe where everybody was just kind of nice to each other.

Apparently she WAS checked by a number of people on credibility (she couldn't do the voices and claimed they were edited in post) and lies (she didn't just take credit, she said Nicholson was bullying her into silence), but I guess when you act with that much confidence..?

For a few reasons my relationship with the fandom is VERY complicated. But the show was like. My entire childhood. Being an autistic kid, a show about how to be a good friends that delivers its lesson in non judgmental ways with fun songs and colorful characters literally saved my social life. I learned how to socialize and to interact. I’ve started to revisit the show and it’s actually become a special interest again. Still a weird situation for me personally but the show itself is wonderful. Edit: Also like. To be clear. When I was watching the show I was in third grade. I was just slightly outside the target audience. And I had just received my autism diagnosis, so now I knew why I never understood people around me. I wasn’t watching the show originally to teach me about friendship, but it certainly stuck with me more in that respect because it was something I was aware of at the time. And again. I was like. 10. The ending literally made me cry even though I've never been to a convention in my life omg. As a fan of G5 and trauma victim of seeing Rainbow Factory at the age of 11, I've been reflecting a lot on the brony fanbase a lot lately. Everything about it is just so fascinating and the impact it had on... let's be honest here, our generation, is insane lol, I mean, it's unforgettable in so many ways.

Hi, I'm 3 years late but I love your analysis, as always. Around 17:45 when you say this, "I theorize that men are not socialized to recognize uncomplicated, unsexual fondness for a female character," I couldn't agree more, and I would even drop the word "character" and just generalize it to women in general. I can't speak for bronies since I'm not one of them, but I'm saying it as a person who was assigned male at birth, was raised and socialized as that, and had LOTS of experiences throughout my life where I did just that: became incredibly fond of various awesome girls and women in my life but didn't really have the frame of reference, experience, examples, knowledge, etc to understand that I was simply feeling a general and platonic fondness for them as people, not romantic/sexual attraction. In fact, I've come to understand over time that most or maybe all of the "crushes" I had one girls growing up weren't really sexual in nature. Obviously that's not the case for all AMAB people, but for me I've found it to be true. Either way, point being that I think you're right... there are so few examples in pop culture and even IRL with boys or men having "uncomplicated, unsexual fondness" for women that it's basically impossible for lots of AMAB people to conceptualize it. I mean I DO think some of that impulse is built-in as well, but it's also very much socialized into people like us.

I think men also aren't socialized to have nonsexual connections with other men. I mean, why else would there be so much "no homo" all the time? I'm hoping that the next generation or two of men get over that- and it looks like it's happening. Maybe in ninety years, two men can hug each other without fearing "teh ghey."
