Stripbox vs. Octabox as a Key Light for Off-Camera Flash Portrait Photography

Ойын-сауық

Every single day I get DM's asking why I use my Westcott stripbox instead of a Westcott octabox to light my off-camera flash portraits. Well... you be the judge. Does it really matter?

    Yeah I've heard that a couple of times and you're definitely right! This was spur of the moment though. I use the strip everyday and show examples of it's usage on insta all the time in my stories, but if you want any personalized breakdowns with a model on a video, I can do that for you. I do stuff like that every week for other photographers and videographers on dannybatista.com/learn !

    You pointed out good things in the end, and I almost didn't drop off in the middle because of the different pose comparisons. But “less space”, and “easier to squeeze in” while shooting are definitely good points.

    what about light domes vs light boxes?

  • @DannyBatista

    @DannyBatista

    16 сағат бұрын

    The larger the light, the softer the light. A 36in light dome will produce similar results as a 36in softbox. A dome however is completely round with the diffusion which means light will spread all around vs being directed in one direction.

    It works just as great in the same scenarios as a 3ft octa. All the same scenarios apply as far as I’ve ever used it over the past 3 years in shoots everyday. It’s 3ft of light horizontally and thats what I need it for in most cases. There are plenty of cases where I go vertical with it for long distance shots, for a harder light to work with the hard light scenarios I like to shoot in during the day as well.

    I like to use a strip box because of the versatility. I’m literally flying to a differnt city each week for my booked shoots and workshops, and since the strip performs amazingly in all kinds of situations I like using it a lot. If you follow me on insta, practically all my photos are shot with it. (All off-camera flash shots)

    I don’t really understand your thoughts on the differences here. In the end it all comes down to positioning, feathering and so on. Add a grid to the Octa and control the light spill. Then you’ll get even closer to the lightstrip look.

  • @DannyBatista

    @DannyBatista

    Жыл бұрын

    I'm not trying to get closer to a light strip look. The point is that an octabox or other circular softboxes or beauty dishes, which everyone believes is the only kind of main key light to use, actually is unnecessary in the majority of scenarios I shoot in. In my 10 years of experience the strip produces VERY similar spill and and soft light qualities as the same width softbox while providing a ton of other benefits in many different scenarios. I can shoot under it in tight scenarios like bathrooms, hallways, cars, etc. where a 3ft softbox would be in the way all around. It's less of a parachute in the wind, on-location. I can choose to have a little bit of a harder look, to mimic closer to sunlight when put in a vertical position. etc etc. It's easier to travel with, it's less obvious in situations where you need to be a little more inconspicuous, and I can go on and on. Gridding an octa does not make it more like a strip, it makes it more like a gridded strip because both act very similarly. A 3ft ungridded strip has a ton of spill just like a 3ft octa. Hopefully that helps clarify.

  • @SugaHoneyIceTea36

    @SugaHoneyIceTea36

    8 ай бұрын

    Perhaps but not in these first 3 examples. It’s clear the edges on the octa are softer and light is more even. Horizontal strip obviously falls off below chest level and the right image due to positioning is poorly lit on the opposite side with vertical octa. I’m no fan of beauty dishes as they are no good for normal portraits and exaggerate imperfections on faces and are only good for fashion shoots mainly. Yes I agree you don’t need traditional modifiers all the time but for me an octa is most versatile. Prefer it over square boxes for example . Also when you shoot headshots I prefer the more rounded catchlight which might not be as noticeable as a full body shot.

  • @mroblige1018
    @mroblige10183 жыл бұрын

    Not much of a difference. I mean you could feather a softbox with a grid and get the same results correct?

  • @DannyBatista

    @DannyBatista

    3 жыл бұрын

    Well the point is I don’t want a grid if I want to get a nice spread either with the octa or the strip. The point of the strip for me is I get very similar results with an octabox of the same width so I prefer to use the easier to travel with, easier to manuever in small spaces, easier to position out of the way, less likely to blow over in wind, stripbox

    @@DannyBatista I agree about portability but the strip box outdoors wouldn't give the same spread of light unless you were in shade or shooting during night hours.
