Awesome video Scott. My question is, are you shooting in highspeed sync. If not, what is your shutter speed. Man, you just made my life easier. I'm gonna try this method. I hope I can do it without HSS. Thanks Sir.

Thank you for watching! Yes I was shooting in hss. But you don’t have to. You can put your shutter speed at 1/250, and just increase your f stop to set your exposure in camera, and then turn your flash on
excellent video Scott...my question is what aperture are you using? Are you using a low f value ( eg 2.8, 4) with high sync or neutral density filter OR just using the camera"s natural sync speed and taking the ambient reading and adding flash ( f8)

Thank you for watching! I should’ve disclosed that in the video, my bad. I was using hss. I shot wide open at 1.4 for the whole shoot when I was using the 85mm and when I used the wide angle lens I was at 2.8. I’m always using hss and shooting wide open unless I’m shooting wedding receptions then I turn hss off so the flashes can recycle fast
Awesome video and very informative and detailed. Can you please provide a link for the light stand?

It really is that easy. But, you are bringing a lot more to the table than adding a flash and exposing for the ambient. Just say’n. Great work, brother.

Wish that soft box was more at eye level and less over her head. Makes the shadows under chin less long and the highlight on the forehead less harsh. But otherwise. Nice shoot

Thank you! I’ll adjust that for next time
Admire your goal in encouraging neophytes to dive into Flash, but, as one of our critics rather untactfully noted, there are obviously a lot more subtleties, like camera settings, HSS, light distance to subject, time of day, etc. (that I'm still struggling with). Maybe you're saving them for your next video(s)?
@scottstocktonphotography
Ай бұрын
I agree that there are a lot of other factors going into it like, iso, aperture, shutter speed etc. I thought by saying, expose for how you would like the scene to look, was giving folks the freedom to choose their settings to their liking, because not everyone likes hss like me, sufficed. I felt that if I went over all the camera setting and things like that, that maybe it would’ve been too many things to have to keep track of, and might have overwhelmed the viewer. Next time I’ll add my settings to the video. Thanks for the fair criticism I will take it in. Is there any specific questions you have with any of setting on your camera ?

@@scottstocktonphotography Thanks. Since you mention HSS, I think I can answer most of my own questions now. Main question: When shooting on sunny or mostly sunny days, as in the video, do you prefer open shade areas or sunny ones? Been afraid of shooting in sunny areas because that probably means "overpowering the sun," i.e., 600W strobe on full power, 1/8000 shuter speed. And, if doing a lot of shots, running the battery down or overheating the strobe.
@jasonbodden8816

Or you can use ND filters, which I prefer, as I get to keep the full power capabilities of my strobe.

Great video and info. Why do you not use a flash meter? Is it just easier to look at the screen? I always wonder because I see less and less of the flash meter getting used.

You can, but it depends on how bright it is. An ad200 would be perfect!

What’s your insta. Maybe we can do a live and figure it out together
Except you’re talking about a mix light scenario. Which is different than completely flash or completely constant light. It’s good info but it’s one scenario
@scottstocktonphotography

Same concept would apply no matter the scenario. I’d expose for the scene and turn the flash on no matter what scenario I was in
what's the size of the umbrella and what flash are you using? TTL?
@scottstocktonphotography

No TTL, always manual so I can have full control of the light. I was using the Godox ad200 and the Magmod 24 inch pro octa box

TTL or manual?
@scottstocktonphotography

Manual every time. Give me more creative control. I always start at the weakest power, then ratchet it up to get it to where I want it
How important is it to use the softbox?
@scottstocktonphotography
Ай бұрын
I’m always trying to go for softer light, and I find the softbox gives me much softer light than any other modifiers, or bare bulb. I also try to put the flash as close to my subject as possible, to make it even softer.

In my very humble opinion, the flash is too high and not exposing enough of her. Still too many shadows in the stationary shots. The action shots were superb though.
