Billy Hargrove came to Hawkins as the new kid in 1984 and quickly took over the school, catching the attention of almost all of it's students. But Billy's history goes much deeper than that. To fully understand his character, I'm going to analyze everything we know about him, from his youth in California, to his relationship with his father and his new family (including his step-sister Maxine Mayfield), to his years at Hawkins High, which include his encounter with The Mind Flayer.
"Flayed Billy" also brings new traits to the character, so I'll also discuss how this aspect of his psyche is representative of mental illness and how actor Dacre Montgomery used this, and other ideas to prepare himself to portray this character.

Whoever wrote his character really understands reactive attachment. It’s why he seems to both hate and care for Max simultaneously. He really does care for her, but he is also a victim of abuse. When he becomes close with someone, he pushes them away emotionally, and he has control issues.

@@rosieglows because he is influenced by his fathers intentions and he also has a good side. Example: his mother and Karen wheeler. We didn’t need a big character arc because we already knew he was a victim. The sacrifice is all he needed for redemption because he was partly controlled by the mind flayer.
It was so disturbing that Karen showed interested in an 18 year old man who was still in high school, and then started trying to entice and pursue him when he was either still 18 or 19. Nothing more questionable than some way older adult going after freshly out of high school young adults.
Billy was a very well fleshed out character. I think the reason people were so sad that he died wasn't just because he sacrificed himself for max the. But when you see the little happy kid he was , losing his mother , because you kinda think something bad happened her? Then years of his dad being abusive to him. You look back over how he treats max and everyone else and just feel sad for him he could have been a totally different person if things had been different. But as great as a character is it made sense how he died and he got the anti hero redemption arc. I don't think Billy allowed himself to show emotions towards people he cared about, he didn't want to seem weak or have it used against him. That's why how he treats max is so conflicting. He cares but goes about it in the worst ways possible. But he obviously loved her enough to sacrifice himself to save her and tell her he was sorry. Its such a great show with great characters
@JazzyB9481
Жыл бұрын
Yeah that's exactly why I was so sad about his death! It was the fact that he was once an innocent kid, but his experiences hardened him. One could argue that having a hard life doesn't excuse that type of behavior, but he really wasn't a bad guy after Max set him straight in season 2. He really just worked out, worked, and kept to himself after season 2, before the mind flayer got him. And in the Sauna scene he cries and apologizes to Max and says everything that's happening isn't his fault. He tries to protect Mrs. Wheeler by telling her to stay away from him after he's flayed, and even resists the urge to knock her out in that scene. And when the mind flayer is telling El that he's going to end everyone, you see Billy shed a single tear. I actually really grew to love his character after watching season 3 a few times.
@crimsonffire

@@JazzyB9481 yeah I think as the audience , we got to see more to Billy than the average "bad guy character " because you get flash backs of him as a kid and El used this and the love he had for his mother to break the smell the mind flare had over him. They have to be some of the best thought out characters I have seen in a show and as you pointed out each season you grow to like and care for these characters ,they are so reliable in so many ways. I know I was kinda rooting for him to live . But he redeemed himself and it was max he wanted to know most that this wasn't him. Was so gut retching to see him open up and say it wasn't him and apologise before the flare took him back over and escaped. The also choose great actors for their roles . Guy who played Billy was great. Going to be a mixed bag for season 5 but all great things must eventually come to an end.

I'd say that's a strong theme of King's. He is intentionally drawing a parallel between fiction and the real world in whic most adults are useless! That's what makes his works terrifying, they reflect real life.
No, Billy is not like Henry Bowers because Billy handles all his problems/fights completely alone, whereas in strong contrast, Henry Bowers can only do anything to anyone when he's got all his buddies with him. That's VERY different. Billy doesn't seem to have any friends and is quite a loner.

Billy might have bipolar disorder with psychotic and/or schizoid episodes, he has become obsessed with max in the way that he wants to protect her, and step in as almost the father figure within the home because of his distain for his father. That’s why he has been focusing his hate for Lucas, is that like with most fathers they are worried they are going to corrupt they’re precious daughters, because that is the way that he feels towards max. Racism CAN be incidental. It's entirely possible for Billy to not have cared about Lucas and never showed a single racist bone at him--if not for his interaction with Max. Billy does show interest with Max, but it's clear it starts as a sort of control, not anything positive. So take this, and add a black boy getting a crush on Max, and it's a perfect storm for targeting Lucas. I seriously don't get the 'he never showed interest in her' from you. It's clear he thrived over controlling her--because he'd get his ass kicked if he didn't keep her firmly under his thumb.

Dacre did such a good job with this character.
When Billy told Max to stay away from Lucas was indirect racism. They have no history with the Hawkins community to say it wasn’t. I have witnessed indirect racist remarks from those who intended as such and those who are entirely ignorant.
There were so many missed opportunities for the character of Billy. A few examples would be: Billy working with the group. Developing a father - son relationship with Hopper. Developing a friendship between him, Steve and Eddie (maybe even Nancy?) A nice tearful interaction between him and Max where we can have him apologize to her. Fight scenes like maybe him vs Jason or an old Demogorgon in the upside down. An inner conflict between him and Vecna or the Mind Flayer. An interaction between him and Will (since they were both possessed by the Mind Flayer. An interaction or bond between him and Joyce. Closure between him and Lucas. Getting to beat the crap out of his father. If he survived I'm sure the Duffers could have done it in a way where Max is still cursed, maybe because of the abuse Billy has put her through she has trauma so you could get a cool storyline between him, Vecna and Max.

Wow. Another Stranger Things video. Always love these.
Even though it is possible that he may have been a bit racist bc of his dad and the times back then, I don't think that's what initially made Lucas a target of Billy's... Many people have pointed out that this happened after Billy saw Max was upset because of Lucas and after that he hated him. Maybe something about it reminded him of his childhood seeing his parents fight and even though he didn't show it very well, he did care for Max and didn't want her to end up like his mother... but that's just a theory!!! ❤️
I love Billy, nice choice for Horror History! I'd love to see one for Brenner.
I loved that his sacrifice involved him "planting his feet to take the charge". What was used to alpha Steve was used to save El.
He was my favorite character, I almost couldn't keep on watching the series.
The duffle brothers have said this in an interview with vulture: Billy is racist, I think. It’s [reflective of] people that he’s viewing as different from him and an overall rage at the world. In this case, seeing his sister with someone like Lucas leads to that conversation." But, also, any way [Billy] can find a reason to attack Max, he’ll use it. We wanted to be honest about what an interracial relationship like that would do, and how certain characters would react, and how a character like Billy would really react to that." So yeah, billy was lowkey prejudice and racist towards Lucas.

@@daft_j yep! And I hate that people are Turing a blind eye and saying that not everything is about race. Lucas is a black teen in the 80s from a small town that is majority white, people were still small minded about race in the 80s interracial marriage in some states were still illegal!

@@izadorad And the 80s had racism written all over it since Reagan targeted black people. So, seeing people like Neil pass his prejudice and racism down to Billy is no surprise to me. That and Lucas would hear a variety of racist terms from subtle cues to overt racism since small town folks aren’t always friendly to black people, even when they’re kids.

@@izadorad Exactly. The few times anti-black racism has been highlighted in this series has been the covert, microagressive kind that happens and ppl(who are uncomfortable with discussions of racism) can try to explain away or gaslight the victim in the situation and say it's about something else other than race.
I feel like he did not have enough screen time I wish we could have seen more about this character

Are we gonna ignore the Vecna-ness of his final scene with the Mindflayer? Him and 001 even share similar hair 😂 x
I think max knew what it was because they were using it to put will to sleeep
I wish we got more billy human
i feel so bad for Billy, he took influence from the people around him A.K.A his father etc, i didnt think he deserved to die over it though. nonetheless, rest i n peace billy
I love your videos thank you for doing so much research with all your videos 😁
I heard when you reference to Billy Nolan from Carrie bc of the Stephen King influences but I think it's also interesting that they made his last name Hargroves, could that be play on Hargensen as in Chris Hargensen, also a human villain from Carrie? Also the name Chris as in Chrissy from season 4? Just a loose thought there I guess.

Made my morning
Thank you for the information
Love this
I would say what shapes Bill is not his father's fury, but that his mother left him there with him.
stop saying dominate, your making me think of all the fanfic i’ve seen
I like the way u repeated California so much times I laughed so had I even repeated it again and again
Eddie deserves a horror history episode
if you make one on eddie it would be so sad😭 i’m just waiting to see what happens in season 5 first
Hell yeah your attention to detail is awesome.
I just finished the series. And this is making me more sad 😭
It makes me sad because he was abused like the most part of his life, he never could do something for him because he was serving his dad. Everyone comes first in his “family”, he was serving his sister too, looking after her all the time. Then he was tormented and abused from a kind of monster. He probably felt weak and vulnerable, powerless and scared all the time, that’s why he tried to protect the most he could his sister (and he was right btw because now she is fighting monster and could be killed any time like we saw in s4) and he died trying to protect her. He was a martir tbh he was angry, yes, but he was only 17-18 years old, he could be saved. Also he was not an asshole to everyone, he was an asshole to people who made him feel treated.

Billy is also inspired by Rob Lowe’s character from St Elmo’s Fire ( also named Billy)
