It’s a shame the sinster franchise died out only after 2 movies. A unique demonic force with just enough roots reality to make it google able but enough to box it in. Such a waste of a potential

Never really notice how religion and super natural horror movies seem to go together. But you're right it really does, since was ten years old horror Movies about demons and demonic things are only onesbThat could still creep me out and still with me ,when done effectively.

This did not have to be 45 minutes. I get interested in the lore and I’m immediately taken out by all the narrators side rants that have nothing to do with the subject and go on way too long. Everything else is great tho

I would say the main reason the west has predominantly christian/catholic and so on in media is because it's pretty much the only acceptable religion to fuck up/tweak, nobody is going to care if you take huge liberties or mock it, you'll probably even get praise for doing it even if what you made is trash. However if you did that to say Jewish/Islamic or any other religion or folk lore people get weird and super touchy about it, especially if you are not from those backgrounds or are white or you mock/tweak things. So if you wanna see new stuff you gotta dig around in the indie zone where they aren't bound by the zeitgeist and tend to step outside of the box more. An interesting movie I found was Stereoscope which is about parallel realities.

To be perfectly honest, this whole “problem” seems more like “American audiences clamor for the same things over & over”, English/American horror is all the same, or a maybe…and this being the thing that makes the most sense: it’s just a language/subtitle barrier when it comes to the movies you’ve seen, covered, or heard about. There are worlds of horror outside of the movies you’ve named that focus on many of the exact topics you mentioned wanting to see. For some basic examples: 1. Serpent & The Rainbow focuses on Haitian & Vodou mythology, The Possession (2016) has a Rabbi exorcist played by Matisyahu with the demon being a Dybbu, and lastly - if you aren’t averse to subtitles: Indonesian Horror director Joko Anwar has many excellent movies that don’t follow Western religion & are often in a category of their own. Basically it all comes down to there being PLENTY of great horror films out there, but if you refuse to look outside of the US, won’t watch anything subtitled, or expect Hollywood to change/remake the better horror out there to fit English standards or language - that’s on you.

Another reason for religious based horror: minimum explanation. Imagine someone who makes up a horror movie monster or supernatural malevolent spirit from scratch. It's new. It's creative, but because it is unknown, the writers have to budget a portion of their time explaining the threat to the audience. This is easier done in a TV series since there is more time available with four 23-minute episodes is a 92-minute long film and 26 23-minute episodes is about a six-movie franchise in one year. On the other hand, religious horror starts off with a villain (Satan and his fallen angles/demons in Christianity) that is already known by the audience even if they left their religious faith.

There is so much potential in pagan horror! And I want to see it explored in ways other than the ‘creepy evil pagan cult’ tropes we see in movies like Wicker Man and Midsommar. I don’t want to see stigma against pagans perpetuated, I want to see the most ancient of religions explored in creative ways onscreen.

I think that to encourage using voodoo as a source for horror movies its very a delicate subject. For one, Voodoo is already stigmatized and demonized, this stems from and fuels racism agaisnt african-american people. The use of "black" in "black magic" in fact comes from the color of their skin. The fact that people think voodoo is just a doll you use to curse someone using pins is another expression of how western culture has processed black american spirituality. And also, Voodoo is a closed religion. So I think only black people who are actually knowledgeable with the subject matter can make a portrait or voodoo in media that is not just racist fear mongering.

Honestly I feel like there's more variety in horror movies in Asian films. The channel Horror Mine opened me up to it and I don't think a lot of the films he covered feature any Christian themes. Though I don't remember a lot of them, most were evil spirits or cults or plain horrible people.

It would help if the religious horror genre didnt seem to be dominated by Christian/Catholic symbolism and connections. Letting other religions get some time in the light would be nice, and not just the generic "oh it's some Pagan ritual connected to my family."

Religious Horror is just a lazy genres at this point because they are so easy to write. Btw, the only problem people have with shark movies is what the old ones did during production, ie killing real sharks, and what they did retroactively, caused mass culling of sharks where none had existed in the past.

I think you meant abrahamic religion horror movies, because not all religious horror movies involve Christianity. Buddhist type horror movies can include The Ring and The Grudge, which involves monks, instead of priests. Also, any horror movie involving genies or djinns is referenced to Muslim horror. Most horror films have their roots in folklore or religion to some extent. Silent Hill, which involves a quasi-christian-like cult is a good example. I think the only types of horror that do not involve religion are usually cosmic horror, such as Lovecraftian stories or fear of the unknown.

To clarify, though there are religious themes, no horror movie is 'Christian', pal. Horror genre, to devout 'Christians' is what they call 'secular' entertainment, and they'd steer clear of it. Fact is: most 'Christians' aren't even Christian.😂

I want a horror film based on The Sims franchise, The Sims could become an interesting horror film. Especially if you take inspiration from the first two games. Granted it wouldn’t be a horror film outright, it would be a horror comedy. An idea would be the film starts out like a regular family comedy but things slowly get darker and more off putting as time goes on. A character get trapped in a room full of carpets and a fire place with no door, a character gets trapped in a pool with no ladder, a character is suddenly compelled to eat something poisonous. So many scenarios could be spawned from this. Not to mention the already existing lore in the first three games is so interesting and a lot of it has some dark/spooky undertones and themes. Olive Spectere for example, her house has a grave yard next to it with a chair at the back to look over the graves and Olive has a romantic history with the grim reaper. It’s commonly believed that she was a serial killer who married men and killed them just to have her romance with the grim reaper. They also have a child together named Nervous Subject, his story also is dark. He was adopted by these two evil scientists who do all sorts of messed up experiments on him and potentially did them his whole life. Those are just examples, there’s so many others. I’d recommend looking into the lore of The Sims franchise because there’s some interesting things, many of them are exceptionally dark. Trust me, the lore is deep and is really interesting. Even the ones that aren’t really that spooky/dark are interesting.

11:49 - there is also a practical reason to not drink or use recreational drugs in a horror movie: not being inebriated in a life-or-death situation. The slasher movie killer has an easier time stabbing someone who is passed out drunk than someone who is completely sober and alert. 14:06 - I think the movie producers' religion matters less than the audiences'. As an example, would it be really be that odd if a Christian movie producer made a Hindu-theme horror movie intended for an Indian audience?

27:07 No, more representation would be a great fix to the issue, but I understand that you wouldn't wanna go there cause some people are quite touchy about it (for whatever reason.) People of different cultural backgrounds bring different ideologies and different fears and mythology, like you showed with the different religions. Great example is Jordan Peele! I truly do think he brought something refreshing to the genre and iirc it wasn't even religious. None of us are ever going to be completely informed on every aspect of everyone's culture, but people fear what they don't know and it can be even scarier for those who do know (ex: the cacuy and la llorona.) Also! because of the same general fears we have as humans but having different cultural perspectives, a diverse group of minds could make exploiting these fears in horror movies much more interesting. sorry for the essay lol

The Crawlers from The Descent aren't Skinwalkers. They have nothing to do with the Skinwalker stories. They're nowhere even close to the stories. And Wendigo typically aren't described the way you mentioned. They typically look like an extremely emaciated corpse. The animal features are typically additions from Hollywood or other sources that ignore the original legends.

There are several movies about Dybbuk boxes. I think it could be interesting to see a movie done about Yeti from the Nepalese and Tibetian point of view. Maybe one where a giant squid attacks a cruise ship. Or selkies with a village living near it's river. If you read about how fairies, gnomes, etc are viewed in old Celtic lore they are scary. A holiday movie about The Yule Lads. Frau Perchta would be fun.
