Jerry Brainum believes that the peak of bodybuilding has passed and been on a downslide ever since - breaks his evidence down in a latest video.
Modern bodybuilding has been under scrutiny in many ways for the past decade or so. First due to the distended stomachs and "unpleasant" look of bloated mass monster physiques. And now more recently due to the many tragic untimely deaths of relatively young bodybuilders. That's why this week Jerry Brainum is going to look at the recent past to try and predict the future of bodybuilding - particularly Men's Open. Is it doomed towards more of a health and popularity decline? Or will there be a shock to the system to change the trajectory of the sport? In our latest episode of Straight Facts, Jerry Brainum predicts the future of bodybuilding using today's evidence.
Bodybuilding, fitness, weight training - all on the Generation Iron Fitness Network!

Nice to hear a clear unbiased view on the modern state of bodybuilding. Thank you. Personally I think it's a shame that drugs have overtaken gym work for getting size. In the 1990s competitors were taking much less gear but had the size and, importantly, the shape. Also what needs to be discussed is the increasing use of anabolics by ordinary guys at the gym.

Agree with Mr. Brainum, 100%.. I think all body building contests and strength contests should require that all contestants have to be completely natural and without any kinds of artificial substances in them. These guys are so stupid as to endanger their health by taking these substances just to win these contests. I am 69 years old, and have been weight training all my adult life, as well as running a lot for aerobic cardio improvement. In the 1970's a lot of NFL players were getting cancer. The most prevalent type of cancer these young NFL players were getting was testicular cancer. These young men were having to have their cancerous testicles removed. It was determined that the cancer was caused by their use of steroids. This scared the shit out of me, and I never touched any artificial substances at all. An NFL star at that time, Lyle Alzado, had brain cancer and died young. He wrote a book before he died acknowledging that his brain cancer was caused by his steroid use. He was a very aggressive player and lost his temper frequently, having to be restrained by his teammates. "roid rage." I blame Swartzennager for not only popularizing steroids in body building but also lying and denying his use of steroids for years. When he ran for governor of California [with his Kennedy niece wife] at his side who was telling the public what a great guy he was, in spite of many accusations from women who'd been sexually harassed by Swartzenagger. It was only then that Swartzenagger admitted to taking steroids. For an amateur like myself, many of the guys I worked out with thought that they had to look like Swartzennager, not realizing that he was taking steroids and paying a lot of money for all of the substances he was taking, while he was lying and denying it. I tried to tell them that Swartzennager is taking steroids and other artificial substances to look that way. Most times they didn't believe me because "He said he doesn't take those drugs." Or, they wondered where they could get some of, those kind of substances. I told them what I'd heard about steroids and how dangerous they were, but they just dismissed that saying "Swartzenagger doesn't look sick." He did a huge disservice to people with his lies and he wouldn't have been elected to "county dog catcher" without his "Kennedy niece wife", Maria Schriver, campaigning for him. Swartzennager returned that favor by having an affair with his maid and fathered a child with the maid. I'm sorry, but I can't stand Ahnolt. He certainly wasn't an impoverished immigrant, and apparently bought his way to citizenship to move to the USA, and instead of working a real low paying back breaking laborious job like my immigrant grandparents did [Sicilian and Irish], as well as most of the other turn of the 20th century millions of immigrants did, to become citizens of this once great nation, he waltzed into the pro body building community and did nothing but work out in the gym and spend a lot of money on the artificial substances he took. He had to have come from a wealthy family in the first place. Any normal American has to work for a living especially if you have a wife and kids, and they can't spend all of their time in a gym and buy expensive artificial substances to boot. Every time I hear about another 40 year old body builder dying of a heart attack I know something is still very wrong with the body building community, even with the newer substances which are purported to be safe or safer than the old ones. And we can thank Ahnolt, at least partly for that.

I promote natural bodybuilding all day. To me if you can buy it from the grocery store aka supplements or protiens then that's natural to me. And there's also men who actually need things like TRT or HRT but the narrative today in the pros is absolutely insane how much they're abusing. Not all but a good majority are blasting crazy amounts... then they die in there late 40s... its sad.

Thanks so much for this video. Yes, there are genetic factors that separate a professional bodybuilder from the everyday human body, there are more people who have the genetic ability to become so if they would pursue it. I been bodybuilding since the early 60's and I still training as hard as is allowable. The word genetics is being used to describe anyone who has massed their bodies to 300lbs at 5'7" and claimed it to be great genetics. DNA, selective choice, arm to torso length leg length, and how it all flows together with joint size just to name a few things are part of genetic development. The evolution of the human body hasn't changed so drastically since John C. Grimek. Training and nutrition have to an extent, but the ONE thing that has is the use of pharmaceuticals.

Some of the mass monsters think that if they stop using steroids their mussels will shrivel up when retired. Yes if you stop lifting weights but not if you stop using steroids. Muscle might shrink at little but not shrivel up. Guys like John Meadows and power lifter Louie Simmons thought that way. As they get old the drugs cause heart problems and some problems with the kidneys and liver. So many retired bodybuilders have died in their 40' and 50's in the last 5 years. Jerry is so right on the matter. Also this is what I have observed in the last 30 years from flowing bodybuilding. I was going to compete in the sports myself 15 to 20 years ago but could beat these monsters nor did what to pump myself up with all the harmful drugs to do it. Also they did not have men's classic physique until 5 or 6 years ago or would have done it. Now I am to old compete at 45 gowing 46 in 5 months.

I feel like it’s currently becoming a mental disorder referring to muscle dysmorphia aka bigorexia. Where even when retired or off season you still feel the need for drugs because mentally you want to always look big and stand out…it’s like dopamine for them…they feel they have to have it despite the fatal risks…and it’s unfortunate really!. Also modern bodybuilders want to get to the Hall of fame where they beat out all the top players because they feel they have more insight and care but I mean there’s no care when it comes to drug taking because getting bigger than the rest comes with a higher price no matter your knowledge and care…everyone before them faced the consequences but modern bodybuilders seem to think they can surpass the rest without a scratch??? It’s a bad mentality that seems to be getting worse due to dysmorphia and idealism. Men in general need an outlet and coaching/counselling in order to break these thought processes and break the chain of going out young. And competing fairly through being natty should be the new trend- not that it would make mental health better as it’s still competitive causing comparison and bodily judgements but it’s a lot more safer that drug taking and still having the mental side attached.

Competitive bodybuilding has lost all of its appeal for me. Watching chemical experiments walk on stage without a hint of aesthetics, who for the most part don't live past the age of 50 or end up senile or with oversized organs and haven't contributed anything of any significance to the world - other than their bloated ego - is not my definition of success. I still train at 69, have lived a full life, lived in 9 countries, have been involved in my own businesses and other causes and have never taken steroids, and I don't gloat over my successes. It's time. The standard should change. Let's see over 60 bodybuilders step on stage, let them be judged not only by their aesthetics, but also by their contributions to the world and perhaps even their mental acuity. What else can they discuss other than their workout routine and diet?

Unless these athletes only do it for a few years and get out while there is still time for restoring natural health, *these men and women are what is doomed.* I doubt the Olympia will change, but I guess I don't want it to. *The big issue is the athletes protecting their health in time.* Honestly, seeing a man that has returned to a normal physique like Dave who can then say, "check out these pics and vids of me", will show kids and young builders a whole different world but most of all, *they will believe they can achieve anything by seeing the contrast.*

It’s time for open bodybuilding to go away. This mass monster obsession has driven bodybuilding into fringe freak sport territory and wholly away from the commercial appeal it once had in the 70’s, 80’s and yearly 90’s.
