Yesterday was my first day on a trolling motor! I ran us through a tree. Thanks for this video! Going to try again today!

Stealth is SO IMPORTANT to me and my fishing. I hunt the fish as much as fish the fish. I turn that puppy on pretty slow most of the time. Sure I speed it up a bit when needed and agree that "pace" for each day and situation is critical. However, I believe that it is usually harder to go too slow than to go too fast. Plus, when a trolling motor is up higher the fish definitely know you are coming! I learned from kayak fishing that you really can't go too slow. I have found a pretty good direct correlation between the speed you are going and the size of the bass you catch. I totally agree that that "on and off" deal is most alarming to the fish....

EXCELLENT points randy, if it’s still and I’m up shallow I’ll turn it on 1 or 2 if I’m pickin a spot apart

But I was spoiled...my fishing partner was my FiL, and he always ran the trolling motor. He passed away 2 years ago, so now the Trolling motor control is on me! 🙂🙃

I like my moccasins freedom, secretive and keeps my feet safe. Yeah boats don't have breaks, depends on the wind three is generally good for me. I tend to let the wind aid me ease into a spot. The pedestal is a must for me though. Physical therapy has been a constant for the past four years, it keeps the cane out of my hand.

Love this motor. Great power & torque. Very quiet. Doesn't faze my Optima battery. Minimal assembly. Gets me around the lake and pond nicely.

Good Info. Boat control and stealth are a bigger deal than most people realize.

My trolling motor has 6 levels, so I usually use a '3', except when fishing in a river going down current..at that point I just use like a '2' just to be able to steer going down current, depending on the speed of the water current. If I go up current, then a 3 or 4 may be minimum. It is never easy, and I still don't fish enough to get experience on the trolling motor. Keep the trolling motor on all the time? That's great if you have long lasting batteries...I have a 24v Trolling motor, and use deep cycle lead acid batteries...fully charged I am lucky if I can run that TM for 4 hours non stop. Again, I fish rivers a lot, so that battery life varies. But these are great tips Randy.... AS ALWAYS!!! 😄🙃

Have you considered doing on-the-water instructional videos?

  • @sc4808

I fish rivers and lakes so speed varies in heavy currents but my question to Randy and everyone else, when in current, do you allow the boat to go with the current (using the TM to slow down) or do you go against the current? I typically go with the current because I think it makes a better bait presentation if the boat and the bait is moving down river at the same speed. How do you guys do it?

Having been a back seat fisherman for many years, the worst for me was going too fast. Trying to keep up and getting jarred really negatively impacted my presentation. Agreed a somewhat higher pace is appropriate for power fishing with search lures or when waves are crashing against bluff walls or other hazards. Wind is usually a factor where I fish. I have that butt seat to lean on due to balance issues. My pedal is not recessed so the foot angle exacerbates this problem. Thanks for the advice and tips.

3-5 seems to be the range I’m generally in. 3 1/2 is good, even though my trolling motor is supposed to be infinitely variable it really isn’t. 100% agree run it consistently. Prop style can influence how high you can run the motor and those anti vibrations nuts make the prop easy to take on/off without tools. Check for line and weeds behind the prop often!

You think it’s straight forward but I can’t tell you the number of guys I’ve seen on the water almost throw themselves in the lake because they have their motor turned all the way to the side on full power and hit the foot pedal. 😂

Go stealth , keep it quiet , drift with the wind steer the boat straight in the wind , turn the power down , use anchor mode on a low setting , use ur power poles if in a real good location , stay in it make a ton of casts or pitches an pick it apart if you are in a spot that you have caught a few , don’t get too close in clear water , make longer casts in clear water , when the water is very clear the bass can see the boat , for me I like to get closer and pitch when the water is not clear , the dirtier the closer I will get to the bank , when fishing in a draining ditch or cut stay out fish it hard on the outer edge before you get closer , do not rush to get closer to the mouth

I’m not Randy, but if you can keep your motor trimmed down without hitting anything while fishing this is a benefit that will cause a slight drag to the boat and allow you to stay off of the trolling motor as if your motor is up the wind will push your boat more and you’ll be on the trolling motor more.

You talk about speeds like 4 5 6, but my trolling motor foot dial is 1-100 (like %) so how does your 4 5 6 numbers equate to the 1-100 scale?

You either have the skills to ride a wheelie for a mile on a 2 stroke dirtbike, drift a hot rod, or drive anything including a trolling motor, or you don't

Be a man don’t use a butt seat. Be a man don’t use livescope even though you’re going to get your teeth cleaned out. I love the info randy but the loathing of those technologies are there for us to use (if you can afford them)
