You're right of course. I was fishing with Denny Braur and asked him what he thought was the best bassboat setup. I was shocked when he told me the best all-around boat was a 17ft fiberglass with 150hp, like the old standard Ranger that early on ruled the circuits. He mentioned getting in the backs of skinny creeks, between waves, fuel economy, towing etc. That was in the 90s. I had a 20ft Gambler with a225 that ran 70+ at the time. Terrible hole shot, and the gas $ was ridiculous! It was $100 plus dollars a day in fuel and oil! Now I have a 16ft Jon with a front deck and a 25hp Yamaha. Fishing is so much easier now. Towing, upkeep, storage.. You are on the right track!

The highest HP that I have ever had is now, which I have a Ranger 178 with a 70 HP Yamaha. I'm a few minutes behind my partners 225 hp rig for each 10 mile run. I can tell you what you do need, or what I consider most important in tournaments. Beam of 95" plus. My very first tournament, as adult in my boat, was a 17 foot with a 115 on it. The boat ran 57 to 60 mph. The issue was I launched 24th. By the time I launched the waves of other boats had bounced off the shore and came back. I have no idea how we did not flip, I remember looking DOWN at my partner below me. Pretty sure my boat was in the air sideways. That was the first and last tournament in that boat. Sold it and bought a 19-foot Skeeter which had a beam of 96" or 95". Never had the flipping issue again. That boat ran 83 mph and 80 fully loaded with gas and two dudes. For me, it was never about running 80+. Everyone runs their boats flat out around max RPM. My engine had max RPM of 6500 but was propped for 6300 RPM. I could run high 60 MPH low 70 MPH and seems like I was around 5500 RPM. Point being, I never had to stress my engine and got great gas milage. Something else I cannot figure out. Why is a 20- or 21-foot boat over is 100k and a 19 is around 60k? I just find it hard to believe 25 more hp, padded deck, and nicer seats is worth 40k-ish more. I guess I could put specs in a spreadsheet to add up differences, but do not care that much. If I win the lottery my next boat is 21-foot, if not, I have fished in 19-footer for 20+ years and is just fine.

As a retired professional angler (guide) who has been sponsored in the past, you are correct, a bass angler doesn’t need 250 hp. Having said that, if someone offered you a free boat package, fully rigged, with 250 Mercury would you honestly turn them down? Just to prove a point and get more clicks? I would take it without thinking twice. Money talks in this business.

I thought the same way, but in the present bass tournament life. A lot or most tournament bass anglers DO NOT GET FREE BOATS ANYMORE. Now, I'm not talking the elite top 10 bass angler. I gotta say I like your videos man but sometimes guys gotta see the big pic. It is ok to run a boat when you get one on a sponsorship deal but that boat now sucks if you gotta pay for it that is a double standard. I also venture to say the majority of everyone on this video and or in the outdoor world has a house that is way more then they need and several utility vehicles and multiple trucks or a truck that is completely decked out. So you HAVE 20 TO 30 rods and reels, why a guy in a tournament can only fish with one at a time. We are are own worst enemy because we take , pay and want more until we can't handle it then we knock the guys that can afford or want it. Look how many boxes of tackle are sitting behind you on a shelf. Don't really need that but you got it and I am sure many guys would love to have it. In my opinion it is best to let everyone have what they want. I been fishing since the 80's I bought the very first ranger 522 that was made, it came with a 250 mercury xb and I still have it to this day and it looks brand new. I catch my fish on the flooded cypress/tupelo points and have to squeeze in and have to idle from point to point. B’Lat had a good video a few weeks ago on his 100k rig. He runs a falcon . His point was the boat manufacturers aren’t at fault. He went over every aspect of his rig and was at over 50k minus the hull which is all the manufacturer actually builds. Just like going to the grocery store, inflation hits hard, resins, glass, mat, roving, all the components have doubled and tripled. Not to mention wages on the employees that are struggling to raise a family.

There are very few lakes in the US that should allow 250 HP on a recreational boat. There should be limits on every lake as far as horsepower and speed. It's gotten absolutely ridiculous.

You go Randy your exactly correct . OOO the 80's what a great time to be a bass fisherman , Redman series, Bassmasters, Red man Gold it was all exciting running 150 hp on our Skeeters, Rangers, Champions. Never saw a really good idea of increased hp other than boats got bigger. Back in the day anglers took stuff out of there boats to run faster , batteries, tackle, fuel anything they could to gain speed. Harold Allen and the Texas boys did it all the time. Even 24 volt trolling motors . Keep moving forward . Dan

Needing and wanting are two different things! People don’t need that big block Chevy in their muscle car, but damn it’s cool! I finally could afford a used Triton with a 175 Merc ! Do I need it ? Probably not, but it sure is fun! I also have a 16’ aluminum boat and a canoe. I use them all! So it all comes down to what your personal preference is! I do know some guys that took fishing to the next level and they have to run what everyone else does or you will get left behind! Whatever you do be HAPPY with it!!!!

I fish a small, 800 acre lake. Guys with big bass boats fish there too. They run 200's and 250's and while not needed on such a small lake, they still insist on leaving the dock, throttling full up, blasting away and running 300 yards to their spot. where they shut it down. I run a 60HP on my boat and never run wide open on the lake even when I'm going from one end to the other. I think a lot of these guys with this boats and motors are really more interesting in hot-rodding and tournament competition than they are fishing. This is why they have no ethical problem with FFS and LS. They aren't really in it for the fishing part.

@@zillobeast5257I do most work on my boat depending on what it is and I agree there is a satisfaction knowing you did that and not someone else. I see nothing wrong with a boat owner taking it to a business that specializes in whatever type of work it needs. Plus it supports that local marina or those smaller boat shops that employ Americans that keeps food on their family’s table. Still, there is definitely posers out there in the bass fishing world with their wrapped boat to fish the Tuesday nighter lol

It’s ridiculous where we are in “Pro” bass fishing! I miss the days of 18 footers with 150s. If I were in the market I’d go tin with a 115HP. For the record, FLW started the increased HP trend and then BASS followed suite increasing the HP limit.

Bought my Phoenix 920 about a decade ago from a local pro. It came with a 250 Merc. What can I do? Overpowered for the local lakes I fish most of the time that have 35 mph (or less) speed limits, but I loved it when I got to take it out on big water. But like the money pushing FFS, I’m sure the motor companies pushed for higher hp in the big tournaments so they could sell bigger, more expensive motors. But I agree with you that the bigger motors not really necessary in most cases and settings.

I’ve always thought that the 1999 rule change from 150 to 250 was a mistake. I’ve had 5 different 18ft 150hp boats over the last 40 years and still run one. My buddies 150 powered 1996 Allison would do 80+ easy. If you had an advantage going that fast they would have sold more of them.

Sounds like a 'pro' fisherman problem. So if a name brand company offered you a 20 with a 250 on it you would say no? The major brands aren't promoting 18's with a 150 that's not the market. Just like electronic companies don't promote 2D sonar. Oh and yes I own an Allison, you either own one or follow one!

If you are in the boat to fish, and not show off, why do you need to go more than 30kph? Most ocean boats don't go over 35 and many don't exceed 25kph. This seems like needing a car that goes 120mph, when the speed limit is 70.
