    What I hate is some of these "stolen Valor" police go after people wearing Camo clothes (NO MEDALS, PINS, HATS, ETC.) just camo shirt and pants. Back when we were kids we all wore camo and played "War" in our back yards. The people I have a problem are the ones who wear Medals, Pins, Hats, and claimed they served in a time of war, go after those people.

    I sadly didn't have camo to play war in, so I opted to wear a jacket (kinda like it was a coat) and jeans. Granted I now have an army uniform but it's from my great grandfather who passed away this year so I never take it out of my closet to keep it in good condition. He was a Korean War veteran, great man honestly too. Obviously now as an adult, I'd likely take part in airsoft wars. I also have a black trench coat so I could get creative with a uniform of my own now unlike when I was a kid (even though I live in Florida, I've always dreamed of owning a trench coat because they looked so damn awesome to me).

    It is NOT illegal to wear uniforms. It's not. The ONLY medal it is illegal to wear if not awarded is the MoH. If it were, then the cast of every war movie could be arrested. (The thing about "deliberately altering the uniform" is a myth. That's just poor research). It IS illegal to defraud CLAIMING you were...insert service/specialty/tours/medals here in order to gain some something you would not otherwise be entitled to.

    same same. The actual only time Ive ever used a military discount is at Lowe's. They make you verify your veteran status and will not issue the special account if you dont bring in either an active or reserve id, or a DD214 for those completely separated from service. Once you bring the ID or 214 to them, they tag your customer info in their computer system as a vet, but only at that store. I wouldn't have even bothered except its too easy to spend $1000+ on materials at Lowes when you renovate your home. 15% is equal to no tax plus 6% discount on final cost. Cant pass it up.

    When I was around 20, I found an amazing looking US Army dress uniform jacket at Goodwill. It had everything on it, french fourragere, 2.5 row stack, some other nifty lookin' things, and it had the rank of a staff Sergent. I wore it in public all the time until it didn't fit me anymore. Only one time did someone ask me about it, and first thing I said was "I don't know, I got it at Goodwill." That was the end of the conversation.

  • @Si74l0rd
    @Si74l0rd3 жыл бұрын

    I'm inclined to agree with your perspective. Without rank or name tapes, it's just very utilitarian clothing. I've worn military cast offs since I was a kid. My uncle gave me a bunch of his old stuff when he got out of the Paras, just because I was doing a lot of hiking and camping and outdoor pursuits. So his much battered army bergan became mine, along with boots and several pairs of combat trousers. The rest of the kit I wasn't really interested in. I didn't want to play soldier, I wanted tough utilitarian clothing and I wanted it as close to free as possible since it was gonna get wrecked by mud and rocks anyway, clambering through potholes and the like. People overlook the pure functionality aspect these days I think. If I'm wearing blue camo fatigues with a DC Shoes hoody and a pair of DC high tops, I'm probably not trying to fake anyone out. Milsurp has been a catwalk stalwart for years now! Granted, I tend to wear branded cargo pants rather than army fatigues these days, but that's price and availability, nothing more. It's cheaper to pick up cargo pants on sale at a retail park discount place than it is to buy milsurp, with the newer kit being more expensive, and the older stuff becoming rarer. Again, UK biased. I bought five pairs of cargo pants from a brand called Legend and Soul, who have a charter to make kit for HRH Prince Charles. I bought them because they're well constructed and made from a heavy twill, with double stitched seams. But I bought them primarily because they were heavily discounted and very well made. I'm not pretending to be royalty though. Cheap is cheap, and quality clothing for cheap is a genuine bargain, whoever it's made by, or for. In my opinion. I was in the scouts organisation for a decade and some and I had uniforms for that, that I didn't much like, or my school uniforms for that matter. I'm not one for playing dress up and maintaining razor sharp creases, but I do like the pockets and I do like the robustness of military surplus. If it's for sale on the open market to everyone, then what's the issue? When it comes to rank insignia and all that though, that's mostly being a con man. Military surplus remove all the customisation on items before sale, in the UK at least. If you're covered in patches, you put them there. I can see why people get up in arms about the wannabes, fakers and con men. And the fake charity style ones need to be prosecuted with all due haste!

    USO saved my life when I was in the Navy trying to go home to my grandma's funeral. Unfortunately I couldn't get to the airport in time for my flight so I was rescheduled for the next morning. So I just sat in the front area with everyone else about to sleep on some of those uncomfortable chair. A USO gentleman tapped my shoulder and asked if I was military. I nodded and he told me to follow him. He led me to the USO area in the airport and told me to make myself comfortable. There was a comfy couch that I sat on and was just excited to be on. Then the wonderful guy told me to help myself to anything in the fridge. When I opened the fridge the thing was stacked up and down with lunchables and hot pockets. I will alllwayyys remember that night and allllwaayyys respect the wonderful people of the USO. THANK YOU GUYS. Y'all are my HEROES

    I was on an old aircraft carrier during Vietnam. Just so you know the Navy does things quite differently. To go from E3 to E4 you are required to take 2 correspondence courses, wait a time requirement and take a Navy wide test for your specialty. A 3rd class Petty officer (E4) is considered an NCO and the navy seems to keep the ratio of about 15 to 1. Possibly things have changed but when I was in, it was at all unusual for a 4 yr veteran to discharge as an E3. .

These soldiers go through some of the most brutal situations imaginable, and so many are deeply mentally and physically scarred, even if they don’t show it..and the majority of them never ask for a damn thing. The one where you talked about hipsters wearing the uniform, I agree because I’ve seen a video where a limo driver wearing a Marshall badge was busted for identifying as a Marshall more than carrying the badge and gun, not to mention suspected of shoplifting at Best Buy. All in all, the issue isn’t wearing the uniform, it’s parading saying that you are what you’re wearing

    i have an air-force t-shirt that was given to me by my brother and his teammates when i was younger. Whenever my brother deployed, i'd wear it non stop till he came back safe. I liked to believe that that shirt is a part of him that i can have on me so i can rest easy. Some grownups would give me looks - but i now i understand why. I never wore it to gain anything that shirt was basically my sheild and still is. it helps me think of my brother when he isn't here

    There are more programs to address addiction and homelessness issues among veterans now. It used to be more common with draftees that were broken after Vietnam. I don't think it occurs very much with people leaving the modern military, unless you fall through the cracks. At the end of the day, there are also some few people who find a kind of freedom living on the streets and they won't forsake it and reintegrate. It's fortunately a rarer thing now among veterans.

On a different topic I do struggle with the constant stops in the videos and talking so much. Should just preface it and play the video all the way through and comment after. Not stop every 5-10 seconds. It takes away from the whole situation. It’s in every video. We can see the dudes falling apart without the blow by blow. Let it flow sir. Let it flow.

    The only times I had an interaction with the USO was twice: 1. I spent 3 months at Galena AK Air Base (Since Closed) The USO sent some ex football players that came around and said hi to all of us on one Saturday. Then one Saturday the USO had an Art Auction, I bought a couple pieces of Art and sent them home as Christmas Presents. The other time I was flying home after I got out after 5 years in the Air Force 4+1 extension. I flew from Anchorage to Seattle and I had like a 10 hour layover. It was the middle of the night and they had a bunk room and they said I could sleep since I just got out and I was traveling home to Hartford, CT. They had some snacks but that bunk looked really good and I got maybe 6.5 / 7 hours of good sleep.

    I was actually in the Navy. But maybe I'll get in on these antics. I'll claim to have served in the French Foreign Legion and Captain Gallant was my commanding officer ( "Captain Gallant of the Foreign Legion" was a weekly televised show of the mid-1950s with Buster Crabbe playing the part of Captain Gallant. His then small son played the part of "Cuffy" in that show)
