STOL Pilot Training with Brad Lund
Hi Folks!
This is a 20 minute video of some STOL pilot training with my new friend Brad Lund and his new #CubCrafters FX3.
Brad wanted to some #STOL #pilottraining and some off-airport training. We have been trying to connect for sometime now and everything lined up for us to get together and work on the basics. As you hear me say often, yes I'm a broken record about it, but Power and energy management is key to become a safe backcountry pilot. For that matter, a safer pilot period. Slow flight is key to becoming a good pilot in all regards in my own opinion.
Here you will see us go through all sorts of various scenarios starting with the very basics of just seeing how he does with a spot landing, his roll out length after touchdown, his directional control etc. Having never flown with Brad previously, we go to some very simple spots to assess where we are and work from there. You will see Brad goes from a very fast approach and long (500' plus roll outs) to slow and stable with 250' or less rollouts in high density altitudes. His progression over a 5-6 hour training session is just incredible and I am certain you will agree.
Sit back and do your own assessment on this training, his technique from start to finish and let us know what you think. Obviously there is so much more that goes into all of this behind the scene but I try to capture the basic info here for you.
Brad is a pilot that spends a lot of time in his jet. The smaller Carbon Cub is new to him and he is getting better with each landing in this video.
I hope you enjoy it. Please leave us a comment, hit the button for notifications and if your like or did not like this video hit the buttons! Subscribing to my channel helps me out as well.

Had to add part two to my comment… Awesome instruction! There’s not enough guys like you teaching.
Holy crap that was so much fun to watch, especially from your perspective! Thank you so much for the VIP, one-on-one training Kevin! I can’t think of a funner day in all my life! I felt I got the best training from the best backcountry/STOL pilot in America! So fun to spend so much time with you. Epic! Let’s do it again soon! 👍🏻

🔥😎EPIC! Thank you Brad for allowing Kevin to share your performance enhancement training. Was a pleasure following along..❤️😎🔥👍 Thank you Kevin for sharing. 👍😉
This format is definitely my favorite type of aviation content on KZread. Thanks for the instruction.
Watching another pilot being trained by the a Jedi. STOL on!
Great video, Kevin. Brad is very fortunate to have this kind of training. Stick back….stick back all the way….just like my dad used to teach me. He also taught me power off spot landings. Only allowed to clear the throttle once. Of course, not for places like these strips, but excellent energy management practice. So, if you’re looking for future video ideas here’s one I’d enjoy seeing.
Kevin, By far one of your best videos. I really enjoyed this one.
Your best film yet and one of the best STOL training films. Of course if you want to learn STOL get instruction other than KZread.
You can see the nerves in the flying just melt away the longer you get in the video, this training and video are great
Hi Kevin, Another great video, I love watching your videos when you are training. Take care, Be safe.
This is good stuff! Damn that wing tip was close....
Red and Black - so sharp!
You guys have such awesome airplanes and such an awesome playground. I miss that life 🤟🏽🤟🏽
Bro, sweet vid! I've had people tell me that they learned more in the 3-4 hours that you worked with them at MayDaySTOLDrag than they have in months with others. You know your backcountry flying, you respect the machines, and you have "no grey areas" when it comes to safety. Keep it up brother and see you soon!
These are the kind of videos I enjoy the most! Keep this up! 🤘
Wow. You're a great mentor.
Very nice! Thanks for the day!
Sooo good!! Cannot wait to get into stol!! 🤠
Awesome video, brother. I always love your energy!
Amazing coaching!!! Learning from the best!!! I appreciate hearing exactly what should be happening while watching the pilot learn what his aircraft will do. Keep up the awesome work!!!
Loved seeing you up on Outlook Kevin and Brad. More of that 🤙🏻
Kevin loved this video. I have about 50 hours in the 140 that spring gear can really bounce you back up if you hit hard. The pilot did a great job getting it to stick.

Man it’s hard working from home today with this! Replay X3 now. Maybe a few more times then I’ll get back., Thanks for this awesome training - for all of us! Can’t wait till Ontario.
Looked like an awesome day for everybody
Excellent video. Thank you for sharing.
Great vid Kevin! Love it.
This is great content! I love flying behind the power curve!

This just shows how easy you guys make this look.
Awesome job and instruction Kevin!👍🏼👍🏼
Excellent video Kevin ,you are a great teacher , the proof is right here in this video with the way Brad improved his skills as the lesson went on ! I also watched you teaching a young guy with a light colored HUSKY in one of your earlier videos ! This is good stuff ,Thanks !!
This is awesome!
That was helpful & nicely filmed 👍🏻
Really enjoyed the coaching and watching the improvement!
What a great video :)!
I wish I was this cool.
Awesome KQ. Thank you. Plan on seeing you at HS21
Good one Kevin!
Badass! Im getting my ducks in a row. Be talking to you soon
Good job man!
sehr schoen !
I need bigger tires on my Avid, and a good stol trainer. This looks so fun.
That wing tip got close 9:20 Must be really hot there the 140 took every oz of HP to take off.
I gotta say, the cessna 140 is probably the best plane I've ever gotten to fly. Super mild, but still a great time.

Super fun with very limited performance makes for a great trainer. And economical. 👍🏻
Great stuff. That 140 sounded like it had a cruise prop. Sure wasn’t spooling up
I LOVE your teaching style!! Remain calm here….. nothing is fucked…..! Hahaha
I want to do this so bad. I want to build a plane and fly like this! Would love to come fly with you guys and feel it in person!
Nicejob guys!! Quick study great teach! I was a little worried with that 140 take off it looked like not enough power with wieght density low and hard climb even with nose down to gain more speed!! But grest skills everybody! …luv it watching everyones little bit differnt flying styles though u can learn alot everytime even pros!!;-)!never cockyjust sure of what you know you can do… glad everybody safe!! Carbon Cub fx3 are def imppressive! And ya’ll cover your six…;)

You absolutely can’t be afraid to point the nose down. Proficiency in high DA is essential before attempting something like this.
At 3:52 I had to rewind and watch that tailwheel bang off that rock about 6 times.
Very very informative!!! I am thinking about buying a Carbon Cub SS. I've never landed off airport, did all my training in a 7GCBC. Owned an RV7 sold it 3 years ago haven't flown since. I want to get flying again!! Other than power are the flight characteristics similar to Citabria? Thanks!!!
Hello brad nice job I’want to learn how to flying the stol were you located

Everyday is different depending on the wind direction
Just got a Legend Super Cub last October, and I’m nearing about 100 hours. I’ve got the short takeoffs, and I’m starting to get better at spot landing and shortening the rollout, but I’m still afraid to brake too hard and nose it over. How do you get used to hard braking without going over?

Where’s the old school slips? Other than that very nice.
I’d give anything for a day of off field training with you Kevin.

Life, kids and just busy. Hawaii for a month has me on the continued catch up. Honestly was supposed to go back east and now guarding our house from fires out west here 🙏
A million dollars worth of planes sitting in that field.
“IT’s ALL RUDDER !” Absolutely 100% ! Poor old DRACO, paid such a heavy price - for the want of “EARLY RUDDER INPUT.” “IT’s ALL RUDDER !” Say it again, “IT’s ALL RUDDER !”
140 departure was sketch

😜🤙🏻 kite takeoff. Super fun!
Pretty cringey. Reminded me of giving primary instruction back in the day. Looked like a shi* show. “Advanced Pilot” might be a stretch KQ.
Why spoil your great video with the bloody loud music, not enjoyable at all.
Hey Kevin, some time ago, I came across you us-bushflyers on youtube. Especially the flying cowboys. I love what you do and I`m sure, if I were in the USA, I would be one of you. Unfortunately, what you do is not possible here in Switzerland, so I do it with model airplanes. I also enjoy playing with the plane, take off and land perfectly, often at the limit. Or with just one wheel across the field, preferably just on the tail wheel. I love training my friends and push them to keep getting better and more confident, just like you do! I was enthusiastic about the SuperSTOL, probably also because there is no modelairplanekit or ARF of it to buy. So I built a 1/3.5 scale model myself, based on documents and KZread research. In the future I will try to make some videos about our "Bushflights". I'm still working on a reasonable video quality, but I've linked a few here for you. I would be happy about a comment. Have fun, take care und fly safe. Greetings from Switzerland.
