Abuse does things to people. Horrifying things. It doesn't justify acting negatively towards others, but it can construe your thoughts of what is right and wrong and how to act as a member of society. Why I'm glad the kids were understanding in the end once they actually met and saw Eddy's brother, and were willing to befriend Eddy and doing so help him be a better person.

The story of the Eds is actually pretty sad if you think about it. They all dealt with some form of trauma at home . Ed had parents who showed favoritism towards his little sister that treated him like crap. Edd had parents who were never around and only communicated with him through sticky notes that they left for him. Eddy dealt with years of physical abuse form his older brother, and I assume that his parents either never picked up on it, or picked up on it years after the damage had already been done. With the neighborhood kids rejecting them, Ed, Edd, and Eddy truly only had eachother. Seeing the Eds finally get accepted by the neighborhood kids was one of the most satisfying endings in cartoon history.

This movie itself: It was basically an apology to the fans (and a chance to end the series properly) and it was able to deconstruct everything: The Eds' flaws (Ed doing something smart, Edd standing up for himself and showing physical strength, and Eddy displaying remorse and humility for being such an asshole), The Kankers (by making them help the Eds instead of torturing them), Kevin and Sarah getting what they deserve, and the Eds finally getting accepted by the kids as their friends. Let's not forget that, The Powerpuff Girls Movie, Billy and Mandy's Big Boogey Adventure or Regular Show: The Movie aside, this was probably among the closest Cartoon Network has gotten to doing a legitimate feature-length movie. This wasn't a two-part movie episode. This wasn't a sixty/seventy-minute episode. This was an entire hour-and-a-half MOVIE. AND IT WAS A HIT. Furthermore, the movie currently sits at an 8.5 on IMDB, with a few professional critics remarking on its quality that is unexpected of an animated tv movie based on a cartoon. It is exceedingly rare for a movie adaptation of a cartoon to ever be received better than the source it is based on, and yet the movie pulled it.

There was no title card in the movie because in 2007, Title Card Artist Paul Boyd, who was also a personal friend of Danny, was brutally murdered by Canadian Police for his wielding of a bicycle chain on the streets of Vancouver, B.C. Rather than ask him why he had the bicycle chain, the police opened fire on him 9 times all over his torso. Needless to say, Danny was absolutely crushed. That's why he ended Season 6 after just 2 episodes, because the final episode was the last title card he had completed. The officer Lee Chipperfield was cleared of any wrongdoing and the RCMP defended him. It was found that Paul Boyd was mentally disturbed, but he was not dangerous. The police claimed that Paul Boyd swung the bicycle chain at the officer, but a DNA analysis only showed the officer's DNA on the chain, meaning that it could have possibly been planted by police. All in all, it was corruption at its finest, and justice was not served. R.I.P Paul Boyd. 1967-2007

Maybe they did it because they wanted to end it on the mock "hero turned villain" ending they had. I kinda found the ending with Johnny funny, but there could have been other ways to end it I think. Still enjoy the show and movie though. It's still one of my childhood favorites and I think it ended off on a decent note that suits the show. It worked for what they wanted and was a satisfying wrap up to the show in my opinion...even if you never find out what the "Scam that must not be named" was.

Looking back on the series as a whole, Eddy's brother was likely a juvenile delinquent like in a literal sense. He probably got involved in actual crime and knew dangerous people like he was in/started a gang and everyone's parents told their kids about it which is why everyone was so scared of him. This would explain why Eddy did scams as opposed to just stealing from people because that's what his brother did. It's also likely that he didn't leave as much as his parents kicked him out either once he turned 18 and went "we don't have to deal with your bullshit anymore" or he got arrested and that was the final straw and they told him don't come home until you get your shit together.

All of the Eds really had terrible family lives if you think about it: Ed had been psychologically abused: Didn’t have many possessions, treasured his comics as he wasn’t given many “real” books and they took away the freaking stairs when he was grounded. Plus, they babied Sarah and enabled her to be manipulative and verbally abusive towards Ed (screaming at him, bossing him around, breaking what few possessions he had, etc.) Edd’s parent’s were neglectful. They just left him a bunch of chores to keep him busy and don’t interact with him otherwise. It could be that they were the reason as to why he wears that hat as a punishment for neglecting to do his chores or not performing well in school which has made him become so diligent, studious and morally superior to those his age. Eddy’s parents belittled him and made him feel inferior to his older brother. So whenever he was physically abusive to Eddy, they’d allow it as a way to “toughen him up and become a man”. Ed was never allowed to be a kid, so he’s more immature amongst his friends where he’s free to do so while you still see him being responsible and capable when he’s put in charge of caring for Sarah (which he does really well despite how horrid she is to him), Edd was never allowed to mess up so he had to mature faster and learn to become more self reliant to avoid mistakes and Eddy was never allowed to be himself as his family always saw him as lesser than his brother which is why he always put up a front and was so insecure. I’m so happy that in the end, everyone around them finally accepted them despite their oddities which is what they were always looking for❤️

The Aesop of the movie is pretty heartwarming if you think about it. Eddy learned the hard way that he needed to be himself in order to get others to like him. Throughout the show, Eddy tried so hard to act mean like his brother because he thought that he would be accepted. It only caused the kids to dislike him. By getting beaten up by his brother, getting yelled at by Double-D, later admitting that he made up everything he said about his brother, and admitting why he acted the way he did, the kids were able to see things from Eddy's point of view and ended up forgiving and accepted him finally.

I feel like the finale also added a sort of indirect explanation for the state of the cul-de-sac and how the "cliques" wound up the way they were. It's obvious that Ed is avoided, and probably always has been, due to his simple-mindedness, bad hygiene, and his sister's vitriol towards him. Double D, on the other hand, has always been implied to be relatively new to the cul-de-sac, and his nerdy nature would make making new friends difficult, but, we see the other kids slowly warm up to Double D and even Ed in ways that Eddy never gets. As for Eddy, the clearly most hated and reviled, that hatred really comes from displaced anger towards Eddy's brother. Yes, Eddy tries to scam the kids, most likely in a pale comparison to the bullying and intimidation tactics his brother used to dish out. But, the kids could never stand up to Eddy's brother. So, once Eddy's brother leaves, Eddy is a much easier target for their scorn. They see Eddy as an extension of his brother and pushed him down from one of the most "popular" kids (at least, he was feared in public due to being associated with his brother, even though his brother treated him ten times worse than the other kids behind closed doors) to becoming a "dork." So, it makes perfect sense that once the kids saw how terribly Eddy's brother treated Eddy, they would accept him back into the cul-de-sac. The kids never had that big of a problem with Ed and Double D, they mostly just thought their idiosyncrasies were odd. It was because of their association with Eddy that they hated them, and it was really because of Eddy's association with Eddy's brother that they hated him. Eddy's scams were annoying, but mostly harmless, even, fairly often, fun for the other kids. The scams were never the source of their hatred for Eddy.

to be fair, they weren't really hated until season 2, in season 1 they were mostly tolerated like classmates who make you roll your eyes by the stuff they do or say, like Rolf for instance is noticeably very friendly with them, while in later seasons he beats them up constantly, this is because in season 1 while they had their negative traits and personalities they weren't dialed up to 11, like they did with season 2 and onwards, like Eddy was selfish, greedy, lazy and irritable in season 1 but also had good things like when he stood up for Edd when Kevin bullied him for being weak, and Ed when his poor hygiene was getting uncontrollable, oh and Ed definitely wasn't as dumb in season 1, he usually at least knew what was going on, the episode which focuses on Eds bad hygiene wouldn't have even been possible in later seasons since he barely knows what's going on around him half the time so he definitely wouldn't have been able to learn all his lines from season 2 and onwards they basically got rid of all his positive traits and dialed up the negative ones to maximum making the other 2 Eds almost look like they aren't even considered friends by Eddy considering how much he pushes them around and how rarely he stood up for them , which made the Eds Eddy in particular the punching bag for the rest of the show, while in season 1 it was more balanced where they got a happy ending or their punishment wasn't 10x worse than what they actually deserved, plus the other kids usually got what they deserved as well when they were acting shitty, while in later seasons no matter what they did, they would very rarely get punished don't get me wrong, I like all the seasons and think all are good, some better than others, but I just think the characters were the most likeable in season 1 where they all had their flaws, but they weren't dialed up to the point of almost being caricatures

@@agbrenv I would account for all that due to getting a better understanding of what the show was, rather than pure flanderization. Totally valid that you preferred the kids when they were less extreme, but, for me at least, it seemed like the show didn't really hit its groove until season 2. I think the school season is the one that overdid it a bit, but the first season didn't overdo it enough. The Tex Avery, Looney Tunes elements were pushed harder from season 2 onwards, which I think gave the show its character. I think the three Eds still were very much friends in the next few seasons after the first, but I honestly preferred feeling like they were friends by circumstances that grew into true friends, rather than friends that picked each other from the start. They were friends, at first, because no one else would have them/the circumstances they were placed in by their parents. We all have friends like that when we're kids, having a small group of people to pick from but having no ability to widen our own peer group. I'd imagine a lot of the cul-de-sac kids will grow apart and not see each other much once they start moving away, with a few exceptions. But, not the Eds. Their friendship of circumstance grew into something deeper, and we see them fully acknowledge the brotherhood they've built with each other in the movie. We already saw that it was there, even when the boys didn't realize it, but we see their own realization during the swamp scene. They have their first real, possibly friendship ending fight, and they decided to fight for their friendship, even when it was hard. This is placed against the backdrop of stories like Kevin and Nazz, who pretty much find out the opposite. When the going gets tough, they don't stick it out for each other. So, again, totally get where you're coming from and I don't think you're wrong, just explaining my view on the Eds relationship and why I prefer a somewhat more belligerent tone. It speaks to the nature of childhood friendships, that it isn't a matter of choice, but what's there. But, the Eds show that, sometimes, really golden, lifelong friendships take work to build and aren't always perfect.

@@erinw4935 the film balances things out really well though, I think Eddys assholeness is toned down much more in the film, well the part where he does it out of anger/hatred or with bad intentions at least since he doesn't slam, push and knock the other Eds around out of anger and frustration as well as showing his caring side towards his friends as well which was very rarely seen after season 1 and before the movie yeah they were definitely friends in the other seasons as well but Eddy rarely treated them that way, especially Edd anyway, at the end of the day it doesn't matter all that much since I enjoy all the seasons

You know, the "Eddy confesses to Edd about being a foul-up wannabe loser" scene, and then Eddy tearfully telling everyone the truth about his big brother were both the final catalysts that sparked Eddy to finally grow up. Sure, helping Edd with his confidence issues through wrestling training in "Tag Yer Ed", letting Edd stay with him in "Momma's Little Ed", changing a light bulb on the Christmas tree in "Ed, Edd n Eddy's Jingle Jingle Jangle", and standing up for Edd against the Kankers in "A Fistful of Ed" were all enough to start Eddy on his way, but getting told by Edd that their friendship was over and then later telling the truth about his big brother were both the final shocks needed to show Eddy the light.

what you talking about, Sarah always feared the Kankers, you should rewatch the Ship inna Bottle episode "run for your ed" Also, imma debunk something: Eddy always appreciated Ed & Edd. You can see that in the episode where Double D is feared by the rest of the cast in "A Fistful of Ed" where Eddy tells Double D "Don't you think you went a little hard on Ed? He _is_ our pal you know?" and at the end of the same episode when Double D is surrounded by the Kankers Eddy stands up for him and tells them "HE'S HAD ENOUGH" and then gives him and Ed a hotdog, Eddy always cared for them, but he always tried to maintain a "cool guy" facade. I hope you actually read this... you acknowledged that people criticised you after the previous episode, but never why or addresed the criticism...

It was a really heartwarming moment when the kids of the cul de sac ended up comforting and liking Eddy at the end of this series, as they saw first-hand why Eddy acted the way he did. They saw the physical abuse he obviously took when his brother was still living with him and see that caused Eddy to have post traumatic issues. Was really nice to see them understand and have the series end on everyone being friends and Eddy finally having acceptance, and inevitably learning that you don't have to lie or act "cool" for others to like you, to just not be an asshole like his brother, that fear is not respect. I'm glad the series ended like this rather than the way most series end with the characters grown up and leaving with not really much closure or explanations as to what happened to them. This was a perfect ending to the Ed-Boys, and one that lets us all assume Eddy slowly learned how to be social without being a total prick and became friends with the kids who used to hate him, and that Ed and Double-D got easily brought into the larger circle of friends in the cul de sac as they were only avoided because they hung out with Eddy who was a total prick.

Underrated about the ending is THAT Eddy learned his lesson. Through his journey with his pals he learned to accept responsibility for his actions and in his conflict with his brother he has the lies and facade of "cool guy emulating his big brother" stripped away. So he can finally develop as his own person.Eddy is demonstrably intelligent. he's brash, quick-witted, persistent, is great at understanding and reading others, and is pretty driven and innovative to boot. we see this throughout the series. Problem is that he doesn't accept himself or responsibility for his actions. So he puts on a front to try to be cool. This was his movie. He NEEDED to be humbled and to confront this aspect of himself before he could be accepted. so when he prostrates himself and sincerely apologises ready to accept his punishment, it's satisfying to see him be accepted in response. He's LEARED HIS LESSON. So you don't get the sense he'll revert back. This is a permenant change for the better. That's something that really made it great for me.

Either from being a better student, being their "little princess" or heck just being the baby of the family. Ed seems to just be so used to the treatment he doesn't even think it's strange or unhealthy which may fuel it, but I think there are rare moments where Sarah shows she cares about her brother (in a whole "only I can beat up or mess with my brother" sort of way)

Their choice to not only reveal Eddy's brother(when they RARELY ever show other characters, especially adults.) What made it better was the breaking of the illusion that his brother was this great wonderful person. We got bits and pieces of his brothers cruel nature through things like his fake Halloweem map and the shipping of baby toys to Eddy. But seeing Eddy get abused shows a painful side to Eddy's life, as well as a deep index into his personality. This movie was done so well.

Amazing review! And agree fully, the restaurant comparison to writing a story is exactly how I feel, good writing doesn't leave gaps of void, everything that was emphasized as a big deal is explained. And yes, Ed needed more character treatment. Did you know: A storyboard artist on the show revealed in forums that there were deleted scenes in this movie? Primarily, when the Eds are around the campfire, they speak into depth about each other's character backgrounds! Ed explains that his real first name is not even ED! He just made it that to be like his first hero: Eddy. Which is a great reference to Eddy in the earlier season, as Ed and Edd looked up to him for various reasons. The writers thought Ed's name should be Stanley, but Danny Antonucci thought Bob would be hilarious. Edd reveals WHY he is the way he is! Before moving and meeting Eddy and Ed as children, Double D was picked on at school in a different town with dodgeball, and vengefully creates a dodge-ball cannon,, inflicting serious harm on the children, causing him to be Massively guilty, explaining a lot in episodes like "A fistful of Ed", where he Heavily is terrified of being considered violent. He proceeds to tell the story and pulls a newspaper article out of his hat that shows him guilty of seriously harming children. This also led to a lot of fan theories that the injury under his hat was from the "dodge ball incident" mentioned in the official Ed, Edd n Eddy character guide, and in the episode where Eddy trains Jimmy to be a mini scam artist. However, this was not confirmed and the whole mystery of what was under his hat was purposely left as a secret to keep the fans wondering. Also unfortunate, when Eddy is asked about his background, he lies more about his brother being great. Then, Ed pulls out rotten gravy that the Ed's either are exposed to or consume, and leads into a 3D animation hallucination scene! I know, right?! I couldn't believe it either. That's why the Eds wake up in different spots from when they fell asleep in. They cut the whole idea out though. There were a few other cuts but that was the major one. I also feel like I remember seeing an interview of Danny talking about a possible approach to Ed, Edd n Eddy in the future, but that doesn't seem likely and is satisfied with the ending. The more you know!

There's no answer they could give that wouldn't be either underwhelming for how much it was built up, or overwhelming with how crazy it went. This is why Eddy's brother being revealed works so well. It completely subverts our expectation in a natural way that we accept, because OF COURSE Eddy is an unreliable narrator. In short, Double D's hatless head would be a plot reveal, and plot reveals often fall flat, whereas Eddy's brother is a character reveal in that it informs us about the character of Eddy

Ed was seemingly content with that being the end of his road, not even really fighting it with a sad "See ya" as he get pulled away. The fact that not only Double D, but EDDY, immediately spring into action to save him shows just how close they all have grown as friends. One, ready to lay himself on the line so the others could escape, and his best friends not letting him be left behind. Cause at the ED of it all, they only really had each other. Even 'selfish' Eddy couldn't loose one of the only people that meant more to him than money. It's small, it's barley even 15 seconds, but that one scene I feel really goes to show how the Eds have changed and bonded for the course of the show.

The only one who never got a normal interaction was Eddie, and he finally was accepted in the film. Really a sweet ending.

I think one of the things that really made this a pay off for me, apart from Double D and Eddy finally having it out, was the fact that we finally get to see the root of why Eddy is the way he is. The kid is desperately trying to reach the mythical levels of cool he always placed on his brother. Especially when he talks about how people respected him when he was with his brother. Everything Eddy does is to try to reach a point where he'll be that cool so he can show his brother he isn't still just little "pipsqueak." But, we also see that Eddy's relationship with his brother was completely toxic. All of the selfishness and narcissism Eddy has is either learned from or a reaction to his brother. And remember, the other kids don't really know his brother any. They fear him. They know of wild rumors about him either spread by Eddy himself or it's almost hinted at by other siblings we never see. But, I think finally seeing Eddy's hero come out and begin to harass and humiliate him in front of everyone was a watershed for them as well as us. It doesn't mean Eddy is innocent of all he's done, but they were told all the same things about how cool he was as we were and yet here he is, not a hero but a tyrant. It instantly puts Eddy into clear perspective and you can't really help but feel sorry for him. Especially when he finally opens up and admits it's all bull. Will this stop Eddy from scamming people? Probably not. And we do see them as senior citizens where it appears the overall relationship dynamics haven't fundamentally changed between everyone. But, I'm sure as they moved on into adulthood, things normalized.

The senior citizen episode was actually meant to be the series finale before the show was given another season to run. At the time, it only made sense that the dynamics and relationships hadn't changed since you've had 4 seasons to develop characters and pulling a 180 with Eddy being accepted wouldn't make sense. Personally, I don't think Eddy would continue scamming. I think with the new resources and morals he's learned, he could apply himself to become a legitimate businessman. He's already got the charisma and cutthroat attitude, but the crucial ingredient to all businesses are happy customers satisfied with the product being sold to them. He was able to do it before by repurposing turkey basters as water guns and he can do it again.

I have to agree that closure is so much better than just leaving ambiguous endings. At least we know the Edds finally became liked and things may have stayed positive. With Bojack and Adventure Time, things stay open ended meaning they can come revisit it later but it also means it leaves everything up to interpretation meaning that until the creators themselves answer what may or may not have happened, nothing is canon and anyone's interpretation becomes little more than speculation and fantasy. I was so happy to see the Edds finally get accepted and when they sing the Friends song at the end was just the most wholesome moment ever. It made me feel like finally, they got something good out of their years of trying to fit in.

this finale was probably one of the more complete finales for any show I have watched. I think the reason he left out what was under double d's hat was because they never came up with something that would quite fit the entire plot of the show. That's the thing. This finale wasn't just the trailings left of from another season....it actually brought elements throughout the entire season into play. solving some long mysteries....but also including some elements not shown before. planks animation. actually stealing the bus. johnny always thought he was sentient, and the show hinted at it several times. there was never really much proof. but then....there it was. plank was stealing a damn bus. no explanation needed! Plank does things. The kankers and what seemed like a creepy obsession now brought into light as you said. they had some kind of heart for them. there are a few others. but over all. after watching the finale....It offered closure not only because it resolved questions. but offered explanations to things we just thought were funny. sarah is a bitch. that's just a fact. lol. we thought eddie was selfish, but sarah ONLY did things that suited her or benefited her in some kind of way.

9:39 That scene was actually censored. Someone leaked the movie on youtube well before it aired on TV. In that scene Ed shouts out "SEX-TENT" during his laughing fit, which is what led to Double D's reaction of "Oh my." I really wish I would have downloaded it. It's basically lost media now.

I think Steve misrepresents Sarah a bit at the end. She was smiling for a bit, but then stopped smiling when she realized how serious the situation was.

I just love how this ending made everyone look like they're growing up and through out the movie they grow up and deal with things adults do it was a great ending to an amazing episode. And when Double D puts his iconic sticker saying "The End" I cried kan

@@gabriellitewski7988 I hear some fans want to make a series with Ed, Edd n Eddie as teenagers at the end of high-school. It's called Peach Creek. It has adult humor and language, so depending on how old you are right now, you might need to wait on watching it.

I must point out; if it weren't for the Ed's always scamming and running wild in the cul-de-sac, Johnny would be the most hated kid in the neighborhood.

Loved this review. It hit close to home being a fan of this show and watching it with my brother. I truly miss the days just sitting by the tv after I got out of school and getting lost in this show. It’s heart breaking that this was the final episode, but all things must come to an end and it truly was a hell of an ending.

The Codename Kids Next Door finale was pretty emotional too. Though the episode itself wasn't perfect, the final scenes of it where goodbyes were being exchanged was amazing.

I really agree with the Food analogy Steve talked about. A good finale should fill you up nicely. But for me, Personally, Finale's make me sad. They make you feel like, "That's it! Show's over folks. The lives of these characters are now closed and done. Period." The only thing that can make you feel better after a series finale, Is to watch the first episode of a new series. Something to look forward to in the future. (Fore example: Going from Star Vs. towards The owl House.) Another comment: There NEEDS to exist a complete series box set for the Ed boys. All 130+ episodes, 4 specials, 1 movie, TV trailers, Behind the scenes documentary, And commentary for every episode by the people working on the show. All of these combined into a solid presentable DVD box set. Because if this exists for Gravity Falls and Adventure Time, Then why not do the same for the Eds??
