This week we take a look at a different kind of Horror as I take a look back at one of my childhood shows, The Cramp Twins. Though disliked by a lot of people, it still has a soft spot in my heart, in saying that though, I can't ignore some of its many, MANY flaws....

I think I remember reading somewhere that the concept of identifying a person by the fingerprints was the result of twin criminals. When the police caught one, the criminal would just say 'they have the wrong twin' and the police couldn't prove whether they were lying or not so they let them go. Only once fingerprints were used could they tell who was guilty of what crime.

This is a gross out show, they were pretty popular in the 90s and 00s, mainly just with kids and younger teens. Even back then they were usually disliked by adults and some kids. I'd say it's more nostalgia goggles affecting your view of it today since most people I know that were kids then but didnt watch it (including myself) dont care for it even though many of us liked those sorts of shows back in the day.

I remember in the US it aired on Fox’s 4Kids TV block before it moved to CN and it was one of the shows that definitely stuck out like a sore thumb, even when it had a more diverse lineup long before they doubled down on anime. Something about it just made it just feel weird watching even when I was just a kid and couldn’t process what was good and bad. Heck, I remember there was a commercial that mocked the viewers saying something along the lines of “if you thought they couldn’t get worse, you’re in for a rude awakening” as if they knew people didn’t like it.

The unnatural skin color of the characters is actually explained as to Soap city (the show hometown of family) being affected by the chemicals from the Hazchem factory (the enterprise owned by Wendy Winkle's and where the twins dad work) that it releases into the city atmosphere and the swamp (also affecting the drinking water) and most of the city works in the factory where Wendy's dad is known to be completely negligent of work safety or even implementing biohazard precautions.

Unpopular opinion, but I loved this show, both seasons even. Not on the same level as the Greatest CN stuff, but just something that's above average and memorable enough for me to keep coming back to it. Especially Wayne's antics. He's the first "love to hate" character I was ever exposed to in media. I never got tired of him, even in the worst episodes. I just wish they gave the show a little more care, because the potential was very underused.

You know what, I'm surprised to find a review of this show that isn't completely negative. Because I for one don't think The Cramp Twins is deserving of the hate it gets. As someone who's been a fan of the TV series from the beginning, I consider it criminally underrated and misunderstood. I'm not saying people have to like this show, as not every episode ends up working. But I do think there's more to it than people give it credit for. I think the extremities that the characters go to can be legitimately funny and clever. I hope other people will come to accept Wayne and Lucien's antics, and I also hope the series will get a proper conclusion. But anyway, I can definitely respect your honesty. There were points I can agree and disagree with. Regardless I believe people need to listen to things from a different point of view.

I watched this show when it aired on Cartoon Network (several times over) as a kid then watched it again recently as an adult after seeing a ' core memory ' Instagram reel of it haha. I think the show has some unique aspects to it, with the best coming from the writing department. The art direction was ehh okay . I can see where they were going with it, kind of reminds me of a take on 60s pop art, using flashy colors to create contrast, at times overly simplified but just good enough to pass as a cartoon. I've seen theories on why certain characters have certain skin tones, but as you say, it seems more random and more based on character personality/design themes. I did enjoy the fact that they spent time developing each area's unique traits (swamp being green/brown to symbolize nature, their family home being themed in purple to show off the mothers fashion taste and sense of order within the household etc.) What stands out most is how each characters personality traits dramatically shift the overall tone of each episode and how each of these ' forces ' interact with each other, which opens the door for stories to be developed with the most obvious being Wayne and Lucien's constant battle for self expression. This is also where the show suffered most, as Wayne's character tends to become ' too much ' all the time which makes it hard for the audience to stick around as you're constantly force fed this sense of tension and anxiety, had he been toned down a bit I think it would've created a more confluent story line. Lucien becomes an idealistic tyrant at times, but it's not always obvious and unwatchable as he seems to learn from his mistakes, questioning himself along the way and thus developing, which is a balance I think they could've better utilized. I did also enjoy how much effort was put into many side characters stories, eg: Walter Winkle secretly being of the swamp folk but hiding it from his own family, yet still spending time in the swamp in his free time and even simple side stories like Dirty Joe falling in love and how that affects Wayne.) What I most liked about the show was the focus on family structure, which I think many modern stories have forgotten about, that no matter how crazy things get in each episode, the family and community still seek to help each other out regardless of their mistakes or short comings, I found this well portrayed as it displayed the overall maturity of each adults character regardless of their shortcomings. The little things add up in this show but ultimately fall victim to the rough animation style and over focus on Wayne's desires to be as unlikable as possible. Overall it's an ' okay ' show with some nice quirks but many annoying aspects it couldn't seem to shake off towards the end of its run.

The outer line style in Cramp Twins was probably an attempt to create their own style, similar to Home Movies. Where their outlines were always moving or twitching. After all Home Movies was introduced in 2001 and ended in 2004 exactly the same as "Cramp Twins" It's likely the styles are a coincidence since both series were released in Sept 3rd and Sept 4th literally 1 day apart from each other.

Ok, why is it that when a series (live action or animeted) has a male stalker it's shown as a serious problem that needs to be dealt with, but when it's a female stalker it's played up for laughs. Characters like Helga from "Hey Arnold," Wendy Winkle from "The Cramp Kids," and Marinette Dupain-Cheng from "Miraculous Tales of Ladybug and Chat Noir" keep multiple pictures of there crush, build a shrine dedicated to them, and do some pretty bad things so that their crush doesn't end up with another girl (who's probably just a friend and wanted to hangout) and suffers no consequences for their actions, the only contradiction to this is that Helga is punished by the universe when the episode is dedicated to her "crush."

I remember this show back when it aired on FoxBox/4Kids. Not one of my favorites at all yet it sits rent free in my mind. I've always hated Wayne for effectively being a black sheep who gets away with murder while Lucian was always taking the blame. About one of the impressive things he did that blew me away was how instead of being a jerk, he made a nice casket and funeral for Lucian's worm. I also remember the opening change where in season 1 when Wayne got spanked as a newborn reacted pleased like he liked it. In season 2, same situation but instead Wayne growled like an animal.

the most solid memory i have of this show is an episode in which the twins get sick. Lucius i think got sick from chewing on some specific thing and thus had to stay home, Wayne got jealous of his brother not going to school and purposefully made himself sick by going to bed soaking wet and with a window open. however he was disappointed to realize that all both of them did was be forced to stay in bed all day with nothing to do. i have no idea how the episode ends, the only other vague memory i have is the opening credits which was only jogged by the short clips you showed to differentiate the seasons. definitely a bizarre show, one that i have thought of a few times over the years, and it was great to find this review!
