If someone is telling you to take SSRI for anxiety that's bs. They make anxiety 100 times worse and make you limp. Benzoes are the answer to anxiety it's just that people have to quit abusing them.

He talks on one episode about how he would have done it. He wanted to put a car in the back of a large truck and put a large block of ice on the gas pedal. After asphyxiation something would make the moving truck drive into a lake with him inside the car in the back.

I took lexapro for the first time 3 years ago and was on it for a year and a half. I became more social and wasn’t so anxious about life. I’ve been trying to heal naturally but realize my thoughts are none stop and it’s not very normal. One day I’ll go back to therapy and maybe try out meds again to live without heavy thoughts

So crazy to hear Eric being serious

It's cool to see someone like Andre who is famous to actually take the time and understand the pharmaceuticals/recreational drugs. Many wouldn't take the time. Me personally I always prefer to know the full outcomes of anything I ingest. To add, although I'm not a doctor he does know what he's talking about from everything I have researched in my life.

The clinical guidelines on SSRI’s have changed somewhat in the UK recently. The maximum recommended time taking them is 5 years. Along with guidelines on tapering, drawn up by a clinical psychologist and Dr who both greatly suffered with debilitating symptoms after stopping them.

Like there was this external veneer of "oh hey everything's coming up Millhouse!" but my internal monologue hadn't changed and the juxtaposition was driving me up the wall.

That’s what scares me about SSRIs, that you can take them even if you’re sober but at the same time you still have to taper down on them just like addictive drugs… so that’s why I’ve been apposed to it but everyone’s different 🤷🏻‍♀️ so to each their own… :)

I was on 5mg daily for 2 months and I still got scary brain zaps for a few months after stopping. For the first few weeks it happened randomly during the day. Then later before falling asleep i would twitch so bad it felt like I was falling and hitting the ground. I normally twitch a little as I fall asleep but the ssri's made it so much worse.

I quit drinking alcohol back in January. They prescribed me Zoloft it made me soo incredibly sad and depressed it was kind of scary. Never again. I'm perfectly fine and happy without any anti depressants and anti anxiety meds.

I tried taking Zoloft and it made nauseous and dizzy. It was the worst feeling. Shout out to you for taking it. I would love to find something to works for me but I just can’t.

Thank you for opening up about this, Steve-O. I remember when I was younger (watching you on Jackass!), I was told not to tell people about having to take medications because of the stigma surrounding it. These conversations help people realize that the medication (coupled with therapy) really is making up for what our body does not make, but it is SUPPOSED to make.

I was surprised to learn that SSRIs don't supplement serotonin, they instead inhibit the re-up take of serotonin which leaves serotonin in your synapses for a longer period. This can provide relief from certain mental health symptoms (but researchers aren't exactly sure why). The problem arises when your body starts to accommodate for the abundance of serotonin and in an effort to achieve homeostasis, will start to produce less serotonin. This seems to be why after a number of months or years, the initial effects of the SSRI are less effective. The withdrawal from these meds can be so difficult, it can further contribute to the patient's feeling that the drug is "working." But once someone hits tolerance, the drug is merely staving off withdrawal. Ironically, SSRIs cause a chemical imbalance.

I appreciate you sharing your experience with SSRIs! More people need to be open and comfortable talking about these things. ❤

Due to many years of peer pressure by my family I was on 5mg lexapro daily for a couple months. Not being able to nut was an immediate deal breaker for me because it didn't go away. My psychiatrist looked at me funny when i brought it up like she had never heard of that issue before. I've been clean for 2+ years but the interactions ssri's have with certain psychedelics is also a no go. I will always keep that option open just in case.

I had no idea Mr Andre was a pharmacist! I knew he was smart, but had no idea he was so knowledgable.

Zoloft has helped me greatly in dealing with anxiety. The few times I forgot it when going on vacation I would get a progressively worsening case of vertigo and what I guess the others are calling brain zaps if not taken daily. The withdrawal or whatever it is called is wild.

Yeah I just stopped taking mine a few years ago and I’m doing fine. Just about as good as I’d do on my SSRI. The side effects weren’t worth the small benefit. And it’s not like I was happy on an SSRI, it just made me not depressed-so kind of in a grey area where everything is just uncomfortable. Therapy, mindfulness and the occasional psilocybin has helped me tremendously more.

I've been on a litany of psych meds and SSRIs or SRNIs I hated the most. The side effects were immense like you said and they made me more detached from reality than I already am.

I loved this conversation. When exercise and therapy stopped working for me I was on Lexapro for a year after my mom passed away. It really was a rewarding feeling. It helped me tremendously with my anxiety disorder.

Yep, it helped me a lot too. 6 months After my twins were born I developed a really bad anxiety thing. As soon as I woke up in the morning. It was horrible. Zoloft def works. I feel great now with minimal anxiety. Only bad thing is the adjustments it takes to start working. Like a whole month

I know they work for a lot of people but I feel better than ever being off of all that stuff. I got put on Zoloft as a kid and it really messed me up, same with lexapro as an adult and prozac. It took months to get off dosing down but I haven't taken anything in 3 years and feel cleaner and more myself than ever.

Yep same here. I was put on Zoloft and it made me dizzy and crazy nauseous. It was a terrible feeling that I had to stop. It made me feel terrible.

Im on Prozac myself for anxiety and when i dont take it, i cant focus as well and feel off that day

SSRIs are way too powerful and have too many side effects for me to ever take them again. You're literally a different person and they effect every cell in the body. They'll charge your brain chemistry and body chemistry and the longer you take them, sometimes those changes become permanent.

You know what else is permanent? Suicide. Sometimes therapy,talking,working out etc doesn't work. I would be dead without meds (although I don't take SSRI's). Plenty of people take them and have zero issues. I took lexapro for a year, but it didn't control my anxiety that well.

It didn't even help the depression, just lost my conscience. One of the many side effects of anti depressants are depression and suicide. It says so on the papers in the box wtf and now I can't cum

I have the same problem it's probably from years of substance abuse but I'm sure it's never been the level that steve I was so I could only imagine im just homeless and can't afford the medication I'm supposed to be on so I know the struggle but I'm super inspired by Steve o that dude shows us its possible to recover from a life of addiction

SSRI can be great to pull you out of depression. I was super scared of using them and change personality like a zombie. However i got to say, i am much more in control of my own mind now. My thoughts are not racing anymore and i feel calm. Not like a zombie, but much more focused at getting something done and not just sit on my ass depressed.

I love both these guys and I'm happy Steve-o found zoloft to be helpful. But what Steve-o experienced by going cold turkey off zoloft is SSRI withdrawal which is a horrendous experience. Its best to slowly taper off of SSRIs. If youve been on them for many years, the general advice is to taper 10% a month. This is because SSRIs change your brain chemistry and that chemistry can only change back so quickly. Its called "withdrawal" but thats not an accurate term since the SSRI leaves your system within a few days. But tapering off of a long-term SSRI can take years (it has in my case.) I too thought Id be on my SSRI for the rest of my life. But strange things can happen with long-term SSRI use (just ask all the old timers in my SSRI/benzo support group). Dont judge your need for an SSRI based off of feeling you get from missing a pill. In those times, youre experiencing accute withdrawal which should be a sign of how powerful these drugs are. I stayed on paxil for decades because I tried twice (unsuccessfully) to get off. Each time, Id get off the pills within a couple of months and then feel horrendous which further solidified my belief that I needed the pills. I'd reinstate and would feel better! But thats the case with any drug dependency. I'm now almost completely off my SSRI and I feel so much better these days. Life is good. Like a lot of people, I started having horrendous reactions to the pill that served me well for decades. My medicine became my poison. I share this not to scare, only to share my experience which illustrates a side of these drugs that rarely gets talked about.

SSRIs made me develop Seritonin Syndrome. SNRIs gave me brain zaps so bad that I couldn't stand taking them anymore. I tried for over a year on the SNRIs. They do help. I wish the side effects werent so bad. Changing meds isnt something im interested in as I raise four kids by myself. I need 100% of my mind always.

Exercise, journaling, meditation, therapy. Great recipe for someone dealing with anxiety and depression. The exercise and meditation help the chemical imbalance, while the journaling and therapy give you better insight and help you find a path forward.

I was on SSRIs most of my life but NAC got me off everything. 150mg zoloft and 1mg klonopin daily

I was put on Zoloft for panic attacks. It made it worse. I was dizzy and nauseous for the whole day when I took it. I couldn’t function. So I stopped and now I just deal with life and know my triggers and try to avoid them. Yes some days I feel like a fight or flight mode but I push myself. It’s hard but it’s possible and better than taking drugs.

I love this conversation because it’s funny how SSRIs can affect behaviour. I typically refuse to take them because it really affects my short term mood but what works for me is midazolam. Yes it’s pretty strong and stuff… Tho it’s makes you more tolerant to people around you, even inspires creativity. True some people are wired to respond differently to all these different psychiatric meds, while some don’t. While some have mixed reactions. If you’re prone to using psychoactive substances, it’s best not to take SSRIs, especially if you’re someone who’s used to adderall…. These 2 can cause a potential psychotic reaction and it’s really best that you’re not prone to using any substance of you dabble in SSRIs. It’s really for the best.

The first med i was prescribed was Zoloft. After about a day i had trouble swallowing so i stopped taking it. Turns out I'm allergic to SSRIs. Do you know how much that limits the possible med combinations to find what works for you? 5 months and 5 meds later, i stopped taking everything. Maybe ill try something else down the road but everything i seemed to try caused some kind of side effect bad enough that i had to stop taking them. Love ya Steve O!

Who told people you’re supposed to constantly be happy? The point of life is to literally find a balance between the voices in your head and that process requires a lot of dark and fucked up places you can take yourself. That’s literally what being a human is. Somehow they made the concept of having a mind a mental condition. Shit’s sad and people on these medications formed a cult inside their own mind that there’s no possibility of life without them. There’s mental illnesses, but anxiety and depression are literally part of the human experience, it’s not a mental illness

why would anyone subject themselves to unnecessary stresses? these medications are so much healthier than other alternatives that people have done for thousands of years like drink alcohol and smoke opium to relieve their anxiety or depression. no one is going to willingly suffer for the sake of suffering. if you get a cut and are bleeding everywhere, you aren't just going to ignore it, instead you'll clean it and put a bandage on it so the body will heal better. the mind needs a remedy just as much as the body.

No one is saying you are constantly supposed to be happy. The point is that if you are constantly depressed/suicidal and nothing else is working (therapy,friends,working out,eating good etc) then you should try a medication. They are over-prescribed for sure, but that doesn't mean that there aren't people out there who need to rely on them.. The brain is the most complex organ in the body and you think that there isn't a possibility that something can go wrong that can't be fixed with just natural things? That's super ignorant. Medication saved my life. I tried everything else for a decade and years of constant horrible depression. What would you do in that situation? We aren't talking about having a bad day, or being anxious before a job interview. We are talking about having bad months and years without any relief.

Relax, buddy. Believe it or not, everyone doesn’t share the same brain. Some people have disorders that make functioning day to day more or less impossible. It’s not about feeling happy all the time, it’s about being able to exist. Ignorance like this masquerading as insight is incredibly dangerous. Don’t let this turd keep you from seeking help if you feel you truly need it!

Lots of people I've seen in recovery rail hard against people who are "California" clean (weed smokers) but take multiple antipsychotics or antidepressants. Just take what you have to take to stay sane, be safe, sober and out of prison. I've never liked antidepressants either the SSRIs or SRNIs. Its frightening that 1 in 5 people are on them. 💯

I was on an SSRI for seven years and found that, in addition to the sexual side-effects, I developed strong cravings for alcohol. Now that I’ve come off them, I have absolutely no cravings. It’s like night and day. Everything is a trade-off.

@@lrsb1678 I did drink and sometimes probably a little too much. The sexual side-effects went away pretty quickly when I came off the meds, which was nice. However, I’m now on another brand of SSRI.

These are the mental health conversations we need

Gaba isn’t suppressed by benzos and alcohol - the opposite happens actually. Gaba is the relaxing neurotransmitter. It’s glutamate that is excitatory. When you drink alcohol for example your brain is flooded with extra GABA which is why you feel calm and anxiety-free… but then the next day you feel extra anxious because your brain is basically rebounding from artificially high amounts. And over time with chronic use your brain reduces its natural production of GABA to counteract all the extra amounts that it is receiving from the drugs you’re taking. So it’s a vicious cycle.

Not being able to ejaculate is an unfortunate side effect of SSRIs but Zoloft is the least likely to have that effect, I know from experience that Prozac and Paxil are both really bad in that regard

I didn't believe in taking anti depressants but now I do, for people who are getting clean after many many years of drug addiction your brain is so depleted of anything to make you feel like life is worth living that you need it, a lot but not all of the people who have bad experiences maybe they don't have actual depression, they're just sad about a certain thing, again I'm sure that's not always the case.

After watching this I’m absolutely certain that doctors prescribe SSRI’s for any issue that’s mental related no matter the ailment

I've taken 3 sifferent SSRI's and they do a great job of stopping intrusive thoughts. If you're out of control or suicidal I'd highly recommend them. But i also found myself with sexual side effects, a lot of weight gain and basically conpletely unable to enjoy hobbies or listening to music...also a lack of energy. Its very frustrating that it has to be a trade off but im sure its not that way for everyone

My sex drive when im on SSRIs is insanely increased. The opposite of whats supposed to happen. My dreams were awful as well. Theyre so vivid and seem so real that they would put me into moods for hours after I woke up.

You can tell that Steve O doesn't like to be cut off instantly.

Benzos and Alcohol are not "the same thing", primarily because Alcohol is also is agonistic to glutamine pathways which produce dopamine and thereby euphoria and a mild stimulant effect, but also antagonistic to other glutamine pathways which ultimately contribute to their depressant effects via loss of motor and frontal/prefrontal cortex function. Benzo's are almost strictly gaba though. Also theyre agonistic not antagonistic to gaba, so theyre increasing the presence of gaba in the synapses. Gaba's function for efficiency is to surpress firing of unnecessary neural pathways, hence why when you withdraw from benzos or alcohol, you have an intense increase in firing of neuronal pathways that gaba normally suppresses, leading to seizures and delirium tremens.

Steve-O thanks for opening up about your Zoloft use. I'm also on it as well and it works pretty darn good. I would have never figured. Stay cool!

First GF I lived with took paxil, she know longer liked sex and became a vacant person, kind of a sociopath. I didnt know what was wrong with her and she didnt either, it was the fgn drug. That said im about to surrender myself to zoloft in my sobriety. Im depressed, and full of anxiety the entire day, I wanna remain sober but I cant go on feeling this way.

See I feel like I felt as a kid in Special Ed Class, knowing I had a problem but not serious as others. I don’t mean this in a negative way but I’ve been going down a rabbit hole of videos on this and hearing “I can’t go without it” just makes me think of my weed addiction. As I’ve gotten older it’s way way toned down x10 but I got that trait in me. It was very very hard mentally and emotionally to stop smoking weed (it was pathetic at times) but I can’t have that happen again especially with something like Zoloft. So not for me. What I meant in the beginning is that I feel in a way I’m being disrespectful to the people with the actual setbacks that can be really hard to get through in life. I know myself and I think I’ve just been through a lot, it’s exterior not entirely interior

Wow it’s crazy. Listening to these guys talk about these ssri’s and explaining it makes so much more sense then listening to a few different doctors/people. I’ll definitely be getting back on zoloft now that i can actually wrap my head around how it actually works. Funny to think we pay for doctors who just say take this take that but don’t actually know personal feelings from it and how it actually works.

Without my Anti-D's (200mg daily), I just can't integrate with earth.

When u stop the antidepressants suddenly it’s like going outside in the dead of winter without clothes….

That sounds terrible. I've heard people say that you go through a personal hell of physical withdrawal symptoms, combined with crippling mental withdrawal symptoms, and of course insomnia issues. Which can go on for months straight. That's the thing about medications like this, once you start taking them long term, you're pretty much bound to for life. I'm sure there are many people out there who fell victim to that trap.

And Benzos are not the same as alcohol at all. It's a nice mix sometimes but that's very dangerous to do is mix xan and alcohol. That will make you black out for sure

Definitely. I used to mix them when I was younger and started carrying a camera around and after blacking out I'd watch the footage the next day lol

Drugs are basically chemicals that change your emotional responses. So if you take them, especially in high doses for long periods of time. You will need to take other medications to bring your emotions back into balance. It’s like taking steroids. You unbalance you hormones and then need to take PCT to bring your hormones back into balance or else you get bad side effects. People don’t do PCT for recreational drugs. This is the main problem.

Wow I never knew Steve-O took those.. I’ve heard horrible things about SSRIs also & how they can really change people’s personalities & so on (I knew someone who’s mom took it and he said she became so different after but in the worst ways) but I guess it really depends.. if it works for you then that’s amazing :)

They are horrible, especially for the person's loved ones who watch them change. Both my parents got on SSRIs in the late 80's and have been on them ever since. Highly addictive and cause electrical brain "zaps" if the person tries to stop. My parents basically became these cold hearted amoral zombies. Haven't talked to them in years now because they became so toxic and rotten.

certain SSRIS can be as difficult to withdrawl from as opiates or benzos. That's the one thing doctors never warn patients with. Some have even told me they were taken by surprise when patients came back having serious issues tapering off.

As someone who is on an SSRI (Lexapro) and a Benzo (Xanax), I can relate to both of these guys. I’m on my SSRI cause it works to control my everyday anxiety and the Xanax is for when it gets out of control.

I thought I was depressed and took Zoloft. I never felt suicidal and deeply depressed like that drug made me. Was ten times worse then what I felt normally. Gym; meditation, work, staying productive is the only thing that works for me.

Yea I’m tryna stop smoking and drinking and my doc says take these it’s better than weed. I’m like I replaced weed with alcohol and now alcohol with Zoloft? Didn’t make sense.

no surprise he needs his zoloff ssri are EXTREMELY addictive. Chemical dependency is a near certainty. Most positive results are placebo. Anti depression ssri meds only positively affect around 10 % of people unless you're a female over 30 in which case it's around 48 %. Most people get ambivalence at best which is worse by far than depression for people who have situational depression. Which is the vast majority of people...MOST are not depressed due to a chemical insufficiency. Ssri are OVER prescribed . However people who have used weed or Molly can NEED ssri because they've destroyed their brains ability to make endorphins. The people who just took weed will most likely recover their natural endorphins eventually. Recent studies show that people who take ssri whilst pregnant or breast feeding risk their children having no/severely reduced dopamine levels as well as saratounim Serotonin syndrome.

I am chemically dependent on opiates after losing my hand in Afghanistan along with many other injuries and due to the shrapnel that can't be removed I've been passing at least one kidney stone a week for about 9 years. I've taken every ssri and benzo as well Although none since my genetic sequencing. My mom is a whole new person on her ssri and I think it can be a very affective life saving drug for some. My depression isn't functionality chemical but situational. Addiction/chemical dependency both get a bad rap. EVERYONE is addicted to something and self medicates with something..be that caffeine or dopamine from exercising. MANY medications people take make you chemically dependent. Blood pressure, diabetes and on and on. I'm sorry if I wasn't clear enough for you.

So Stevo takes Zoloft, drinks coffee, vapes, chronically online, and quite possibly a workaholic. Seems to have earned his right to preach onto others that he knows the “right” way to live

The side effects are not worth these psych meds

Idkkk, I was going through it and told myself I need to alter my mind. Double Dose tab of acid, 8 hour trip and I came back legit realizing the answers are within me to any of my problems. That trip changed my life. I took it at the height of my anxiety and I came out on the other side. Took a week plus to get my emotions and energy back to normal after. I was fried, but I came back with this self respect and humble confidence I don’t think I would have. Weed also did this for me, the only positive in the beginning I got from it was just being able to breath. I was outside myself and could see everything around me. Now I use it to get outside myself but it’s more of pop out the lawn chair and just people watch type vibe these days and that’s good enough for me

LOL Steve-O switched his addictions to zoloft. Terrible drug for many people, can cause serotonin syndrome which is extremely serious.

Addiction and dependency are two different things.. Maybe do the research instead of spouting ignorant statements. Meds saved my life, and many others. It's OK if you dont' understand what clinical depression feels like, but it is very real and it isn't just having a bad day or bad week. It's months and years of crippling depression. Also, serotonin syndrome is rare and rarely anyone gets it unless you mix it with other drugs. Stop spreading bullshit.

I have end stage liver disease due to cirrhosis due to alcoholic hepatitis and have been around AA since 1982 - I know about addiction. You aren't even supposed to take SSRIs for more than a few years, they are not meant to be dependent on. Steve-o traded one addiction for another.

I was on zoloft but it was shit, 30 mg of mirtazapine helped me a lot!

You should read into Dr. David Cohen's take on SSRI's and the dangers of taking them. He also addresses his take on benzodiazepines. His book "Mad Science" explains the issues those class of pills cause along with various studies. He's also a UCLA Professor who is maybe one of the few that goes against modern medical science. "Mad Science" is one of the main books that helped me get sober from a horrible benzodiazepine addiction! I'm now going on 15 months Benzo-Free!
