They are afraid of the Trump base and are probably thinking forward to the 2022 mid-terms and want to keep those seats as it looks like they will regain their majority in the Senate this time and are hoping to flip Congress and they will do it by blocking Joe's agenda and then blame Joe for not getting anything done. If that sounds familiar it's because Republicans in the Senate did the same thing with Obama. We could be facing a global economic meltdown soon and Joe will have to inherit that as Obama did and if Democrats are blocked because the Senate won't pass anything that anger will arise once again and there will be a Trump 2.0 waiting in the wings to run as the GOP candidate for 2024 and he or she could be worse than Trump. You think those Trump supporters will go away quietly? No they won't. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that base will be up for grabs on the right and this where a Trump 2.0 could emerge and make Trump look pale in comparison. If Biden ignores the working class, young people and does not fix what went wrong with him losing support among blacks and Hispanics and Latinos then the danger is a Trump 2.0 could win the White House in 2024. I have no confidence in Biden even acknowledging what the Dems did wrong this time and why that landslide victory never came to pass and why the blue wave that would supposed to sweep the country never came to pass either. Remember Dems wouldn't even do an autopsy report of what went wrong in 2024 and instead blamed Russia, Jill Stein and Bernie for Hillary losing.

I rolled my eyes so far into my head there in my mouth. Thought my brain would have at least prevented that but then it is mush after watching this crap.

"I didn't expect this to break my heart..." That moment was so real.....so many people are feeling that way and the majority of them haven't even realized it yet.

Can't believe this monologue would be relevant again 2 months after...

I lost my dad of 89, too (in June). He was a big fan, and we would frequently debrief. I don't know whether I am relieved or not that he does not have to suffer the pain of hearing Trump further stain the office and our nation. MSNBC started broadcasting him, but as soon as Donald said his first lie, they dumped him, and Brian Williams basically said, "Nope, not gonna do it... not gonna broadcast his BS. I'm summarizing Brian's words, but that was his point in explaining why they dumped out of the live coverage.. Brian Williams has started his nightly show by counting the days of the Trump Administration, like Ted Koppel did nightly on ABC with the Iran hostage crisis (which became "Nightline")... I noticed what Brian was doing on his first show, and thought, "Uh-huh... I see what you did there...".

Yeah I have a really hard time taking those kind of preachers seriously….they seem…unhinged..? Say what you will about other religions, but I do tend to think more highly of you when you’re preaching a sermon in a more composed manner even if you’re speaking Hebrew or Latin etc. this type of preaching makes Christians look mentally unstable, and this is why people mock them and don’t want to join!

Got this recommended to me after that Utah booing of Romney, and yeah...this has aged like wine. With Jan 6th and the Republican Party going off the deep end, we're in a bit of a mess all because the orange baby didn't get his baba.

Fact is election is not so close, Biden has over 4 million votes more than the incumbent, it is not close! The 19th century constitution amendment created the Electoral College and since then five times, five times a candidate won the popular vote and lost the election, three of them in 19th century and two of them in the 21st century. Time to retire such old and unfair system that only causes a mess like the one we are witnessing, and finally gets to the future.

I'm with you. These aren't the values I stand for. I believe in law and order and I believe in building a country with all of us given a chance to fight for the life we want. These people are not preaching what I believe. I don't agree with how a lot democrats go about issues. But voting for the current republican party is straight up not right. What happened to us being the party of decorum and civility. I swear watching debates looks exactly like teenage girls fighting over latest trend. This isn't right.

This is moving. The best I have heard from Stephen Colbert. Passion, dignity and authenticity. Watching from the UK, I have been sad about the division we see, in the US, UK, and elsewhere. I really hope that we can find the best in ourselves after this.

The difference in Steph's tone here and in Wednesday's monologue is noticeable. Here, he sounds completely heartbroken. On Wednesday, the heartbreak was replaced with fury. Pure, unadulterated fury. Another good question is why the Democrats didn't get those same dead/out-of-state people to vote for Democratic senators so they could take back control of the Senate instead of setting Biden up to be completely unable progress any of his plans through legislation. I wish we had proper freedom. Not Anarchy, nor entitlement to things we didn't earn, but a structured, respectable, and decent democracy that adapts to modernization, with focus on the country as a whole, not just the top 1%. Coming back to this today. It is amazing to reflect on how poorly the Republican Party at all levels, from Congress to the rank & file, failed to act at any point then or since in the best interests of the United States. Failing to live up to the ideals of the Founding Fathers and a Constitution they so love to quote.

I had to re-watch this. Steven always makes me laugh, but I forgot he also could make me cry

Ouch. Well said, sir. All media needs to stop all coverage of the president completely now going forward. If we all ignore him he’ll have no power. Plus it’ll really piss him off!

I voted for Biden and I am damn proud of what he has accomplished. I maybe ashamed of my family and their ill advised views and opinions. Pretty sobering to think that jan 6th is yet to happen.

Colbert's monologue after the events of January 6th is even more emotional than this one. You could visibly see his anger and him struggling to keep his composure.

Listening to this a year later. It still hurts and unbelievable how Steven said republicans need to choose between Dump and the American people. They chose Dump 🤦‍♂️
