I told the wife that the biggest thing I learned with the Spyder was to relax. If I want to fight it then it will gladly fight. But if I relax so does the Spyder. My enjoyment went off the charts when I learned to chill and have fun

Great video. When turning, I push with the outside hand (right hand on left turn, left on a right turn). This takes practice before you're comfortable pushing with your right hand while applying throttle. If turning with speed, I'll plant the outside foot (apply pressure) and slightly lean into the turn. The one thing I have yet to figure out is a comfortable way to kill cruise control while not braking. The computer doesn't kick in like it does if you brake and the engine will throttle down hard, pushing you forward. One great tip I learned deals with road hazards. If the hazard is small enough, aim for it so you roll over it at your knee. This allows all three wheels to miss the hazard.

When you kill the cruise control make sure you have your hand on the throttle and try to throttle match and bring it down slowly with your throttle

One thing I learned on hard cornering (mountain ryding) as you lean there come a point where you need to apply your body weight by pushing your body inside with a hard step on the outside peg or floorboard. Riding the twisties can be very strenuous. Do be aware if you lift the inside tire, your nanny will take action. When that happens, it's very disconcerting.

Hi, I bought my first RTL in 2019 coming from 30 years Motorcycling (last 6 Years BMW K1600GTL). I struggled a lot on my first rides with the RTL. BRP is offering in Germany professional riding courses only for the Spyder. There is a basic and afterwards an advanced course offered on course tracks with wet, dry, curves, etc..conditions. I did both of them and since then enjoying the Spyder very much. 3 weeks ago I picked up my new Sea to Sky which again has massive improvements ride vice. The main difference I learned was not to use the throttle hand at all to steer. It should be only used for throttle. Means the left hand only hast to take all steering moves. So push to go right and pull to go left. With this technic I learned to enjoy driving Spyder. Thanks for your VBlogs, I'm enjoying and learning a lot from them eventhough I had to make my own experiences driving German Autobahns with 180km/h speed which the Spyder does perfectly. Thanks and regards Zuli

Hello from down under in Oz. I was lucky enough to pickup my new 2021 RT Ltd only 2 weeks back and like most people coming off 2 wheels it was very disconcerting re: over steering. Having found this video I now don’t feel so bad, thanks Bob. Excellent for a newbie to Spyder. I intend to pass on the link for this clip to the store where I purchased my machine. I look forward to looking at your other posts. Thanks again.

Largest adjustment from two wheels to three wheels was the crowning of the road. Two wheels you don't feel it but three wheel Ryker/Spyder it seem to drift down side of crown. It took me a good six months to feel comfortable on a highly crowned road.

If you live in an area where you ride on very twisty and mountain roads like I do in East Tennessee, I absolutely must use both push and pull to make some of those curves. But all other advice in your video was right on for me. Once I learned to relax my grip riding was so much easier. Over-steering is a common problem when first learning. The best advice a friend gave me, which applies for 2 wheels or 3, is to NOT look at the curve you are in, but to look ahead to where you are going, and somehow miraculously, the bike just goes where it needs to go around those curves. Made all the difference for me...no more struggle to make the curve. Thank you Coach Bob for all the helpful videos you do. I followed your directions when I installed my front lower grills and they were so helpful!

As usual C B, a superb video. I ride an RSS so my comments are probably specific to the sport riding position, I agree that at first there's an overwhelming feeling of what have I done!! but as you suggested that goes away once you learn to relax. On the RSS I find that pushing the bars is still prone to over-correction and pulling into the turns much smoother. The other comment I'd like to add is that focusing a little farther down the road and looking where you want to go instead of right in front of you, makes a huge difference. P.S. your channel played a large part in my purchase of a Spyder. Thank you ;-)

I sure could have used watching a video like this last year, before I bought my Spyder, the part where you explain your push vs pull method of steering. Those first few days were a little frightening, learning how to steer and handle bends on the Spyder at speed. My very first ride ever on the Spyder was the 100 mile country highways and backroads ride from the dealership to home. That first ride without leaning, or counter steering, and going around some of those bends made the ol' ticker skip a beat or two. It felt like the Spyder was trying to toss me off, and that was the scariest part of the learning curve of riding a Spyder. It took a couple more days of riding before the "aha" moment finally sunk in, by pushing the opposite hand to steer through the curve, which provided the feeling of stability to stay in the seat. Once that feeling and technique was learned, the confidence level of riding safely around bends and through twisties was welcomed and super fun. If there are Spyder riders who prefer the "pull" steering technique, I just can't imagine how they can stabilize themselves on the seat. Maybe I'm not in the majority with the "push" steering method, but it works well for me, but I'm just an ol' guy loving my Spyder and I do prefer to stay securely seated on it, 😳😁lol, around the bends, twisties, and turns. Another great coaching video. Have a safe and fun weekend.

Folks reading this, PLEASE understand this. CB touched on the road & how it effects the Spyder. So true. But what also is VERY important for your Spyder to track properly is tire Pressure. Please make sure your front tires are properly inflated & that BOTH are at the same pressure. This can dramatically alter how your Spyder handles. Also, when putting new front tires on, make sure they are of the same size...make...& brand. Two Different tires could very possibly have different compounds & THAT could be very serious to the handling and safety to your Spyder. JimKeri.

What an incredible coincidence in that I purchased a 2021 RT Limited this morning and have been riding, off and on, all day. I saw this video earlier today, watched it twice and went back out for another ride to work on things you pointed out. Your points were dead on. This is an incredible machine and great advice from a veteran is invaluable. As a longtime subscriber I went into this purchase well equipped to make the correct purchase for me. You do yourself, and the Spyder community, proud each time you post. Thanks so very much for all you do for us! So, today I went out, bought the motorcycle of my dreams, I’ve mostly eaten right, I’ve been nice to others and I’m doing it right because I’m definitely having a good time! Thanks for that advice too!

Luckily I didn't have the disadvantage of riding two wheels prior to my Spyder, so it all came a little easier. Pushing for anyone is easier when steering, but I find pulling to be a little more comfortable at low speeds, such as parking lots. You hit all the high points today, Coach. Well done..!

Love the video CoachBob, What i have found out is, if your a new rider to spyders is to treat your grips like eggs shells and you don't want to break them, that way you don't get those white knuckles and relax that's the key, and yes the Baja Ron's Sway bar does make a big difference, I installed one on my 2011 spyder RT

For those of us who live in the north who have grown up riding snowmobiles, the transition to the Spyder is fairly easy. They have very similar handling characteristics. Makes sense when you look at the design. You guide a snowmobile down the trail and you push on the outside handlebar when cornering just like the Spyder.

Another great vid coach! If all car drivers stop and think, they'll realize they constantly, every so gently, tease the steering wheel while they drive. Like you say, the vehicle 'wants' to go straight, but many variables try to coax it in other directions which cause drivers (essentially unconsciously) to correct the effects with just a smidge of steering wheel use. Who drives a car with a Vulcan death grip? I think the same analogy applies with the Spyder. I could be wrong. I pick up my 2023 Spyder RT limited up in three weeks. Again, great vids. I feel well prepared for my 3-wheel class here in Denver CO.

Hey Coach Bob! I wanted to report back. I have watched every video, maybe on the planet, about how to take turns, curves, and twisties on a Can Am. Two wheels, no problem, I got that down solid. But these Spyders are a different breed! I, as you, have a 2019 RT Limited and they are the least Sporty of the lineup. What I found works best for me is to use your system as the foundation and the Go To when things look hairy. The rest of time I use whatever works best for that particular maneuver and about 90 something percent of the time yours shows up to whatever degree necessary. There are tons of systems and methods and theories and all of them work well under the conditions where they are best suited. A few weeks ago I was still grandading along at the posted speed or less and praying it’d go well. Now, I can hit them hard and at a considerable amount faster. I tend to leave the 2’s behind. It took approximately 4000 miles for the Spyder to become an extension of me. I practice fast and hard when I’m passenger free so that I can provide excellent and safe rides when she’s along. Can’t thank you enough for all of your assistance.

Hi to both Coach Vic and Bob :) Coach Bob those roads in this video are great for travel, being basically straight and in good condition, so the way you ride them is near perfection in my view! Some of the "Twisties" I ride force me to either slow right down or to lean heavily into a corner and both pull and push to steer the sometimes off camber bends at speed. Some of my favorite rides have multiple compound corners such that it pays to watch the advisory speed signs or things can get "hairy" really fast! One thing I found early on with my Spyder RSS is that is is much easier to ride with a good sway bar and the suspension set softer. That way every little bump in the road is not jarringly felt in the ride or handlebars. It's an interesting and pleasing experience to watch the two front wheels independently bouncing on rough roads and not feel the bumps disturb the ride and handlebars lol :)

Thank you, this is very helpful. I just bought my Spyder a few weeks ago and due to life happening haven't gotten out on it as much as I'd like. I've only been out on it 5 or 6 times as of this writing. Everything you said about overcorrecting, I've been doing - despite my yelling at myself constantly to relax my grip and let the machine do what it's designed to do! I've scared myself a few times in curves, fighting the machine. I've gone from a 400cc Piaggio MP3 to a twice-as-heavy, 1330cc Spyder and tbh I wondered if I made a mistake buying this thing. It's encouraging to watch you ride with so little effort, to see that I don't need big muscles to ride the Spyder My biggest challenge is roads that are lumpy and bumpy, with dips along the side of the lane where the ground underneath has settled, and you can't really see it until your tire dips into it and SURPRISE! Of course my reaction is to grab the grips tighter rather than let the machine correct itself and only help it a little bit. Anyway, this is long winded, but thanks again for the tips and encouragement.

Bob I just purchased a 2012 Can Am Spyder RT Limited, I have never rode or owned one. I have been riding it around the neighborhood, but only going about 30 - 32 miles an hour, also our pavement is very rough. So yesterday my husband on his Harley and me on my Can Am went out on a some what curvy road and I felt I was all over the place, my hand griped so hard they went numb. The road speed was 35 mph which I felt was a good start for me, since I haven't owned or rode one, I was beating myself up like what in the world am I doing wrong here, at every curve, so went decided to go to town which is straight roads and let me ride and get the feel of the bike maybe a bit more. My husband thinks I should do the curved road on my own to get use to it and comfy with the bike, I do also, because I felt like I was trying to watch him and keep up and learn the bike. So I will probably watch your video a lot to get the steering down and try to relax my hands and stop doing what they call the white knuckling on the grips, I know its because I am nervous and afraid of going off the road. Just some info about me. A few years ago I had a HD Sportster and I had a wreck, come to find out it was the handlebar bearings, the had a flat spot and had lined up and it locked up the bars and off in a field I went. So I have really wanted to get back into riding again with my husband and this was my bike of choice the Can Am, I am just trying to learn the steering and if I can get that down I know I am going to enjoy it so much. Thank you for your videos and I learned a lot today watching this one. I just have to trust myself and the bike. Thank you again Sharon Henegar Morganton NC

CB I justed watched this video again after watching it when it first came out and I had just got my RTL. This video should be on Can-Am's site as a tutorial. In the safety class I took they heavily emphasized pushing versus pulling when you're steering. When going into a turn the instructors also wanted you to push with your leg/foot and lean. I found doing all 3 really had me feeling like I'm part of the Spyder versus feeling like I'm going to get tossed off. Thanks again for sharing your wisdom!

I find it's a lot like riding a bike with a side car except you don't have to worry about the 3rd wheel lifting off the ground when you go around a corner and the front wheel wanting to go one way when you accelerate and the other way when you put the brakes on. Great fun

Excellent video CB. My technique is a bit different than yours but it seems to work. People ive given rides to have said they felt very comfortable with me & had no worries at all. Even though I've only been riding since December 5th of 2020. They've mentioned how smooth i am at turning..accelerating...& breaking. Like you i try & improve & work on techniques EVERY TIME i get on the Spyder. Like at sports, i think im a natural. My motor skills & ability to pick up the skill to ride is very easy to me. But like you i Humble myself & don't get over confident. Great stuff from JimKeri 👍

Thanks for the tips. I just bought a 2012 RT Limited and had exactly that same problem of oversteering bringing it home on my 20-mile ride. It just felt so unstable and I was gripping the handlebars for dear life! I was worn out by the time I got home. I am 71 yrs old and have been riding since I was 15 on a standard 2-wheeled MC. I now know how to approach this situation and will succeed with a lot of practice. Thanks

Thanks Bob, this video has been so helpful, I recently bought my first Spyder, the 2022 RT sea to sky, & I have made mistakes on steering especially on curves, & your video is going to really help me getting over that shimmy feeling because of over correcting on steering the bike, I had 2005 Yamaha 1100 cruiser, but I am loving my new Spyder, so off I go to practice what you have taught me from your video, ride safe & thanks again

Great video as always coach. I agree with all your comments about getting caught up in accessorizing! The Spyder should perform adequately as-is without sway bars, new tires etc and it does if we just relax and let it. I’ve had mine for almost 3 years now and am still twitchy on the interstate. It’s just practice and time that will get it done. I would like to hear you discuss grooved roads sometime and that “wiggle” feeling we get when the back tire grabs those grooves. Not dangerous but unnerving for sure. Any tips on how to power thru that squirrelly feeling?

I found this a very interesting video, I just go my 21 RTL back from dealers for some add on's, one the Baja Ron sway bar! What a difference, I love it! Also question is your Zumo XY live wired that you turn on/off when you start the bike or did you wire into a cb or direct batter? Mine is wire direct and I need to move so it comes on/off with the key. You and coach Vic ride safe.

Just wondering how you may be able to tell a difference whether the alignment is off or if it's yourself causing the swerving motion. I've heard of some people buying a new spider and alignment was way off the certain shop didn't do on laser alignments

Enjoyed the discussion. I'm interesting in seeing if one-handed steering will work well with the Ryker as it does not have power assist like your RT does. The Ryker is definitely an upper body workout in the twisties.

I test drove a Spyder and the only way I can describe it was it felt squirrelly. Driving straight at in town speeds the steering would skip left then right again and again just enough to make me a nervous wreck which kept me in a constant state of correcting and unable to enjoy the test drive. Is this what you’re talking about in the video. Am I causing this by subconsciously steering vs. aiming and lightly correcting ? Great tutorial btw!

Hi Coach, love your content. I’m considering getting an F3. That said, I’ve NEVER ridden a motorcycle before. I’m considering the Can am F3, because I believe it’s certainly a lot safer than a traditional 2 wheeler. Wanted to ask ya, what are your thoughts on a ‘Newb’ getting the Can am F3 as his first, and possibly his only bike? Thx 🙏 By the way, forgot to mention but I’ve signed up for the Basic riders course offered by BRP/Motorcycle Safety Foundation eCourse.

Thank you so much for all of the information and tips. I have had my spyder for 2 years. However, I ride as often as I can mainly the summer. I teach school and pt job. I feel so horrible because the people I ride with are amazing and they roll. I have ridden the highway quite a bit but not at 80. I feel like the weak one even though they say they don't want me to feel bad. I have heard convos about them having slow people ride. I am really trying but curves and speed, I am the weakest link. Any thoughts or advice please?

Wow. I just went for a ryde after watching and listening to your video. It's the first time I've been comfortable since I bought my Spyder a month ago. Watching the Spyder movements and your steering grip and inputs have made a very big difference. It's similar to the advice given on Spyderlovers.com but being able to SEE the Spyders response as you're ryding is the ticket. I have a suggestion for you. You should consider being a coach. No, wait, YOU ARE A COACH!! And a darn good one. What's the best way for us, your fans, to support you? Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!!

We plan to ride this together how do we as a couple get into sink with each other. Newbie Don

Death and injury are always a possibility. But, in my experience. The 3 wheeled (2 on the front) creates a larger profile, which translates into less people seeing you better and not pulling out in front of you as a result. I feel way safer on my Spyder than I do on my 2 wheelers.

I would never condone driving with one finger. The point being made is to realize that to much feedback will create an oversteer scenario. Which creates folks riding all over the road. But yes.... one finger driving as with any lazy riding technique will invariably get you killed.
