I have been watching various Spyder videos as of late, trying to make up my mind if I want one or not. Especially here in the Houston heat. I ran across your videos and have watched a lot. Let me tell you, you and CoachV have definitely inspired me! My wife is scared of motorcycles, she can barely ride a bicycle, but after watching your videos she finally wants to go buy one. (at least sit on one and see how it feels.. baby steps) We are going to go look at some this week. I know this is a couple of years old but I just wanted to say Thank You! for your time in making these.

Took my 202 Spyder RTL to the Tail of the Dragon. You either lean or you crash. Fortunately the nanny mode saved me in a few of the curves. It was a workout, but I had so much fun with my ride. Love the Spyder.

It's hard for me to understand how anyone could ever get upset or nasty with you Coach Bob. You are truly an inspiration for most anyone who has witnessed all the good you do. But I suppose there will always be unhappy people in this world who can't seem to find joy in their lives and prefer to blame anyone but themselves for their unhappiness, but I like your "block" approach to handle anything nasty . Your inspiration is one of the main reasons I bought a Spyder RTL. At times, I do miss 2 wheeling, but I will never ever regret buying the Spyder, the most fun and stress free riding I've ever enjoyed. Now there is one thing I can "blame" you for, haha, better yet to give you full credit for, is putting the idea of having both a Spyder and a 2 wheel ride in my life. You planted that seed of "hey, why not" when the Suzuki was added to your "portfolio", and also reinforced by today's video, my head is seriously considering adding back a 2 wheel ride in my garage. For me, my last 2 bikes were cruisers, just my personal preference, and very recently Honda unveiled its 2021 Honda Rebel 1100, and that new bike has grabbed my attention, it won't be avaiable until next month, so perhaps a spring gift to me from me just might be a pssibility. But to sound like a broken record, I just want to thank you again for all you do and for giving this old boy the inspiration to ride again, and to realize that you can still have 2 wheel fun while continuing on a new found love for the Spyder.

Thank you for this video. I'm seriously considering getting a Spyder. In fact I test rode one yesterday for the first time. I liked it, but also turning was kind of funky. I have ridden 2 wheeled cycles for years, so it is probably just a learning curve. After watching this video, I am leaning toward getting a Spyder. Thank you

I lean on my F3L all the time...probably more habit than a need in making a turn. You DO need to lean when the road is not level. I let the F3L lean with the road, but I lean to stay upright. Great video!!

Just a little on "the lean" My first Spyder was an ST-S. I found the lean the hard way. Took me about 500 miles to figure out how to ride it. Old habits had to be broken. My back was a mess and that was why I went to a Spyder. Once I started the proper leaning, plant the outside foot and lean into the turn. I realized I was getting an upper body workout every time I road and, my lower back was actually getting better. I know that won't work for everyone but it sure helped me. Now on a 2020 RT-L and still loving it. Boy, have they changed the front end on this from the old ones. Keep up the good information

High speed leans only belong on the track.. A friends son was doing 20 plus around a country corner slide off the road broke his neck and died.last summer I was just five over on my Goldwing I started sliding out. Because I’m an experienced rider when I come in to a corner I stay vigilant to stay prepared for just those scenarios.

What a great video CB3. I have a friend that just had his HD converted to a 3 wheeler and I have sent him this video as I believe it will help him transition from 2 to 3 wheels. I told him the main reason I lean on my Spyder is not so much for the turning of the bike but just to support myself for more comfort. But like you I've lifted the inner wheel and use the shifting of my weight to be able to ride a bit more aggressive when in the mountain curves from Congress to Prescott, AZ.

  • @broderp
    @broderp6 ай бұрын

My only concern is the transition from riding on two wheel to three and back to two again. Counter steering and lean on my Z900 is something you get into the groove with repeated practice. The Spyder is the opposite and you are getting tossed off u less you lean into the turn. I have both a Kawasami Z900 and a Spyder, I dont plan to give either up, but the skillets needed to be proficient on each are very different.

I love the spyder's overall design, I've been hoping for years that they'd develop a model that can lean. Full disclosure, I don't have a Spyder. I have done a couple test rides, including with my 1-up person, and we liked literally everything about the machine except for turns. To the point of this video: can *YOU* lean on a spyder? yes, certainly. But the type of 'lean' being referred to is a track racer's lean - where your butt leaves the center of the saddle in order to change the center of mass on the bike and (as you clearly state) prevent the wheel from coming off the ground. This is very different - and for many (I'd venture to say most): UNPLEASANT - than the basic tilt/lean of a 2-wheel bike as it goes through a turn that by its very nature pushes you more firmly INTO the saddle rather than pulling yourself out of it. And that's just for the rider. Once you add the passenger the equation changes again. They do not have the handlebars to grip for wider stability, nor do they have the center body of the bike to thigh grip (at best they have knees and lower), and their body position is higher as well which increases the amount of force they feel and how far they have to adjust in order to try and stick with the main rider through a curve. So in the end I couldn't disagree more about the 'if you're a regular rider, will you miss the lean? no' comment. Can you ride Spyders through turns that would require a lean? Sure. As you stated it's a skill, but just because you're good at something doesn't mean you like it or that it's pleasant. Riding a traditional/2-wheeled motorcycle is practically effortless once you've got the basics down because the forces involved help the rider, any passenger, and machine stay united. Spyders are precisely the opposite and it becomes more and more of a fight that requires you to be a stronger and stronger rider every step of the way once you leave a straight line. If my prayers are ever answered and can-am makes a spyder that genuinely 'leans', I would empty my garage of bikes and fill it back up as soon as humanly possible - because riding is fabulous and the platform of 2F/1R wheel riding is AMAZING; but I'm not interested in an experience where every basic maneuver is trying to separate me from my bike. Grew up riding horses, and I had some really belligerent ones that wanted me off at any opportunity they could find an excuse for. I'll take a hard pass on a return to those days. This is the opinion of me and mine, there are three of us and we've all ridden a spyder at this point and this was our takeaway. It's a good machine and deserves the love that plenty of others give it. It would also be super exciting to see an electric can-am (that can lean), just sayin.

For a reference of the type of riding my family enjoys doing: there's a set of highways in Texas hill country referred to as the 'three sisters' ride. 130 miles and about 4+hrs to do. It's a delightful ride. Your big straights are easy enough, the spyder would absolutely shine here for easy cruising. But the main fun/feature of the ride (and why it takes so long to go such a short distance) is the amount of twisty roads and switchbacks that you go on through the hills. On a traditional motorcycle, these demand your attention to navigate safely but the turns themselves are pretty easy. 25-40mph snug turns are just that effortless on 2 wheels. The spider would have you slinging yourself back and forth across the body of the bike constantly. It would be exhausting and dangerous for you to ever not be at the top of your game.

Bimmer rider here, love smooth and relaxed touring, but also enjoy the challenge of the twisties, and want to be ready for whatever comes my way. Home-building an articulated, active leaning reverse-trike of my own, so I can lean WITH the chassis and bank into turns, instead of leaning against it to fight a rollover. Lots of time, effort, and mental work involved, but so long as I'm mixing it up with cars and trucks without any crash protection, I need every maneuverability advantage I can get. Thanks for this great video, which seems to confirm that I'm on the right track (no pun intended) Just as with a 2-wheeler, need the agility to compensate for the fragility.

I've owned two Piaggio MP3s and loved riding both of them out on the roads. But a low speeds is where I always got nervous and always where I got myself in trouble. They're pretty stable on gravel but if I'd put my foot down at a stop and my foot slipped, it was game over. I'm still learning my way around the Spyder but like you said, I don't miss the lean like I thought I would, and the tradeoff of not being nervous at low speeds is well worth it.

Miss the lean a bit but my balance is not what it used to be. So I improvise, adapt, and overcome. Thus the Ryker purchase. The handling reminds me a lot of the 3 wheelers and quads I used to race back in the day. Hanging off the bike on the inside corner definitely results in more traction and lowers the center of gravity which gets you through the corner quicker and more efficiently. Great topic Coach.

One thing I believe you should stress, and this happened to me recently. Some people don't look when they come to a stop sign or yield sign and will flat pull right out in front of you. If I had been on a two wheeler, more than likely I would have had to lay it down in order to keep from crashing into a car. With the Spyder, you can get into an emergency situation where you have to hit the brakes hard in order to keep from having a bad accident where you could be injured and tear up an expensive motorcycle. Yes, you would be aggravated at the driver of the car, like I was, but I didn't get hurt and I didn't drop my bike. I was shaken up by the near accident, but I extended my ride longer in order to calm down so I could go home and be civil to my wife and our cats. Like you, Coach, I am glad to have my Can-Am Spyder. I still have to worry about people who believe they are the only ones on the road, and I have encountered teen drivers who haven't learned that they aren't supposed to talk on those blasted cell phones while driving, but as long as I am as careful as I can be and watch other drivers and try to anticipate what they might do, I will enjoy my Spyder. TCRS. Merry Christmas to you and Coach Vic. Gerry.

Thanks very much, Bob. This is one of the most commonsense videos I have seen in quite a while. I have been tossing up for some time whether to go back to 2 wheels after having a hip replaced (and still having bad knees), and this video has decided me. I am a rider who simply enjoys riding. I am neither aggressive nor a racer, so I will certainly not miss the 2 wheel lean much, and being able to stop on an angled gravel road shoulder is a huge plus, as is turning in gravel filled car parks and back roads. I don’t get too many people razzing me about the F3 because I’m 6’7” and 300lbs (except for my friends of course, and they razz every kind of bike..... it’s what friends are for 😆😆😆). Once again, thank you for this very balanced, detailed viewpoint, and 2020RT upgrade.....here I come 👍....I just need to find/make highway pegs for a bit of a leg stretch (Daylong will give me 2” extra seat height and 1” back👍).

I’ve enjoyed learning new cornering techniques after 50 yrs of 2 wheeled adventure. I have to unlearn all those tactics from Reggie Pridemore schools and numerous track days. My first conclusion is to back up the corner way back and throttle application is critical. You can coast thru a motorcycle corner-you must accelerate thru a Spyder corner.

Sitting here in Brazil and watching your video regarding Leaning on the Spyder. I bought a new 2009 Spyder 990 SM5 Roadster, of course in 2009. I must admit I felt really awkward in the beginning when going through turns on the open highway a moderate speeds, however, I became more comfortable with it as time passed. In 2014 I decided to venture out from Defuniak Springs, FL to Laguna Beach, CA to visit my son. In preparation for the trip I added the accessory of highway pegs. During my trip I noted that going into a left turn when I had my left foot on the highway peg and my right foot on the normal peg near the brake pedal, the turn was so nice and even handled much smoother in a turn at a higher speed (I am not talking about dangerous speeds either). In the right turns I did the reverse of right foot on the highway peg and left foot on the standard peg near the gear shifter. The lean in the turns just felt absolutely good. I am 70 years old now and still riding my little lady to this date and the only thing I wish it had is a cruise control lol. I had a callus between my right thumb and index finger for the longest time from the throttle after that trip to CA and back to FL with side trip to CO.

I build RT's and own a few 2 wheelers I never missed the lean and prefer the flat cornering of a well designed trike. Body lean on a trike is counter productive for the most part some lean is OK but forget the pressing weight and anything with the knees or feet all you need to do is straight arm and push to turn it's that simple. I am amazed at the number of people that panic when riding a 3 wheeler and the macho riders seem to have the hardest time. I have also hit them hard enough the ESS has not only shut the throttle off but also grabbed the brakes too. Could I flip my Spyder, pretty sure I could, but it would not be easy.

Coach Bob, can you share with me what you use to mount your GoPro on your bikes? I have a GoPro Hero 8 and ma just learning how to operate it. I have a helmet on my half-shell. But during the winter and on rainy days I wear a LS2 Carbon Fiber Vortex Modular helmet and the swivel mount will not work on the modular full face. So I want to place a mount somewhere on the front of the bike., What is your best advice on what to use and where to mount it? Thanks!

If you are facing forward from the motorcycle. I would use a suction cup mount on the windshield or on the gas tank. Of course you can use the standard GoPro stick on buckles. I have seen many guys use the chest strap mount with great success. I am doing a series on how to run a KZread channel. Yesterday I came out with the one on how to mount to a helmet. I will also be coming out with one on how I mount things to the spider itself and to my two wheelers.

@@CoachBob3 Thank you! I have been looking at the GoPro brand suction mount that says it is good for up to 150 MPH on a motorcycle. But I’ve been a bit skeptical since I can’t find anyone who ha used one. So based on your recommendation I will order one from them today. I want to get it set in place and do some test videos before we head for the Tail of the Dragon in N. Carolina/Tennessee this spring. I have subscribed and set up notifications so that I can follow you on KZread. Love your and Vic’s videos!

@@crisbuhler As long as it is mounted properly, mine has been rocksolid. Most of the time if I’m putting it in a place where it’s questionable, I will use a safety lanyard just in case of failure. That said, it has not failed me one time in over a year of regular use.

Hi coach, presently I ride a Goldwing dct, I love the bike and it's beautiful. Because my wife likes to ride with me I'm considering getting a spyder RT limited; as you know, they are not cheap. Do you think now is a good time to get one or wait until the end of the year 🤔

I recently bought a truck because I really needed to. I have been looking for a magical motorcycle deal. I just haven't been able to take the plunge yet. If you can find the magic deal.. I would... But...in the state of the economy and vehicle volatility... I'd definitely shop around.

Thanks for getting back to me coach. I pulled the trigger on a spyder rt limited; thank you for all the info on this machine, it really helped me make the decision.

When riding two up, would you suggest the passenger lean with the rider? I know from riding motorcycle, the pillion is to remain upright, and not lean with the driver. It is the same or different when riding two up on a Spyder? Thank you.

I don't think its that necessary for the machine as much as the person. Coach Vic doesn't lean, but my Daughter does. I really don't feel much of a difference. Great question. I may do a video on this very question and compare the two.

Those little electronic "baby-sitters" are really a pain!!! I've had it cut in at low speeds as the wheel lifts. So far...on high speed turns it hasn't presented an issue for me. I wish CanAm would put a Sport Mode on all of their products. It'd make it a lot more fun for sure.
