    I know its late, but I got a game of commander under these rules to work. Running removal is pretty strong, but feels fair VS the really strong Rulestext pokemon Pokemon has a BUNCH of tutors so playing "MTG good stuff with a 3 card tutor every turn" is really strong There are a number of cards that need to be banned like everflowing challice because they cause people to not engage with the mechanic of pokemon, we houseruled "Any card that kills more than one pokemon and nothing else, or prevents them being cast is banned"

    @@RedBobcatGames So we had three of us play, I was running a Graveyard deck with Eevee's as support using Muldrotha as my commander. The other two both ran very similar decks using pokemon to trigger Prowess and relying on strong pokemon to work as big beatsticks to swing in and game end. One used Elsha of the Infinite and the other Narset, Enlightened Exile but both ended up running very similar cards that made creature tokens on non creature spell cast. As for lands, I was running 39 lands and using Muldrotha's ability to return lands spend on retreet cost or dead pokemon or self milling. The Narset player used only 25 lands and used pokemon that searched for energy or had low energy costs to get by, whilst the Elsha player had a whopping 50 lands! All the decks where a surprise, but it was known I was running eevee's as we asked how to handle the singleton nature of commander in regards to pokemon, we decided on a hyrbrid rule, each pokemon that has diffrent rules text is a diffrent instance, but you can only have 4 pokemon that share a name. So you can't have 4 Eevee's from one set, but you can have 4 eevee's total. We all built our own decks and played in tabletop simulator, I used the custom card function to give pokemon cards MTG card backs, the Narset player used a command on the tapletop workshop we used to give her cards all the pokemon card backs, and the Elsha player played with card backs visible, none of it made an effective diffrence on gameplay We all agreed we had a good time, and are currently disccussing rule changes to make it more fair. The game ended in my victory using an abrupt decay on a rulestext mon to take my vfinal two prizecards and theres some concern over "run all removal" becoming the meta which pushes pokemon out the format. Never thought I'd see the day that Commander players are playing too MUCH removal! One of the biggest changes was we ended up having turns that where "Pokemon TCG but they have counterspell" in which a normal pokemon turn would occer and do something incredibly powerful, only to be curtailed by a bounce spell or removal or as the name suggests, a counterspell. That was definatly a highlight!

    Electric being White is just plain wrong. Electric should be Red, just like Lightning Bolt. Electricity is clearly depicted as belonging to Red in Magic. To make up for it, Fairy should be White, (yes, I know that "fairies live in the forest," but seriously, are you going to tell me that Blissey, Sylveon, Jigglypuff, and the all the other pink Pokemon are any color in Magic other than White?) and Fighting should be moved down to Green. The only one of those changes that I'm a little iffy on is Fighting, since Fighting Pokemon tend to be rage-filled and have a strong fighting spirit, which is kinda' Red, but Green also has a lot of rage going on, and "fight" effects in Magic are literally Green, plus fighting types tend to be big, and Green has the biggest creatures, so since we need to move something to make room for Electric in Red, fighting makes the most sense. Also, a lot of Ground/Rock types were made into Fighting in the Pokemon TCG, and Green suits them better. I'd also argue for potentially moving Psychic into Blue, since mind effects are usually Blue, but since the Pokemon TCG also kinda' merged Psychic and Ghost like they did with fighting and ground, I can see it in Black, too. Blue is overpowered, anyway.

Pokémon energy cards would function like lands too, so you could tap a grass energy for a green mana or a grass energy. 3) I'd have assigned the types differently. White - Normal, Fairy. It's a pretty common misconception but WOTC aren't the original creators of Pokémon TCG. The game is designed by a company called Creatures Inc. It's actually the first Japanese developed TCG. The 3 lead designers at the time were previously involved in the development of EarthBound. The game is inspired by MTG, but I think that's something one could say for any TCG. WOTC was brought in to localize, publish and distribute the game in the west because of their expertise in trading card games and organized play. They were forbidden from creating their own cards or modifying the game rules themselves, but they eventually allowed them to for Jamboree. The set was cancelled because their license was revoked, but the cards WOTC designed were included in later sets according to a recent investigation.

    Watch Wizzards do this they can make it into a battle type that you control after watching Rysthic studies video on foils its not the first time either company has taken inspiration from eachother. one of the big problems I had with the battles in March of the machines was that they never felt good to attack. Because if you attacked them early you must be a somewhat agro deck so you are losing tempo and making your clock quite a bit slower, but if you are a control or midrange deck attacking battles was just a win more move since you must already be ahead on board or tempo and it gives you another creature or tool to keep winning which you where already doing. This was not such a problem in the limited environment but in constructed might be the reason they never saw competitive play since win more cards are not the best for such formats. If I was to think of designing them for MTG I would make it so they either all have tap abilities or mana abilities or both because giving up on land drops is the worst most decks are built with the idea of being able to draw the right amount of cards relative to their mana curve so giving up on lands might make the mechanic dead on arrival since you are giving up on land drops to get your pokebattles to do their thing. but to give them something to do you could add a level up mechanic to the them making them stronger giving them more abilites and making them indestructible creatures that can only be destroyed when the damage piles up. to add to the prize card mechanic can be changed around for the battles you control if defeated to be flipped around to give your opponents resources while removing some of your own some resources This video has shown me battles still have untapped potential and they could be really cool if they revisit and reinvent the card type.

It's possible you're confusing it for a rule saying that, on the very first turn of the game, your pokemon can't attack 2. can I play trainer cards? 3. No trainer cards yet, but I may come back and do a follow up video because I do have ideas (feel free to house rule this if you like though and want to play yourself) 3. Agreed, but that's half the fun. Removal becomes A LOT more powerful in this format. 4. And yeah, fair point. I'm not sure Nintendo would see it that way though...

    While fun if you and a friend already have pokemon cards lying around, I do think it is very jank for the following reasons: Cost differences: in its most basic form, pokemon have 0 cmc, this makes them extremely susceptible to a specific set of cards (chalice of the void, nix, ratchet bomb etc) in addition to drawing you opponent prize cards. This means that it pokemon are extremely vulnerable if your opponent wants to destroy them. Stat differences: On the other hand, pokemon, for being free, are exceedingly chonky, I don't know if the example game is the normal pokemon power curve, or if some of them have powerful yet useful effects, however I assume that there are at least a few pokemon that are disproportionally useful just like magic cards (something like: Draw cards, then discard trainer cards). This chonkyness also further pushes away from damage, as a number of colors have multiple 1-0 mana removal options for pokemon, or 2-3 mana repeatable/whipe options. Doing so is also extremely advantageous since these cards will redraw themselves. A win condition reliant on your opponent: Basically, to get all the prize cards, you need to nock out a number of your opponents pokemon. If this is your main plan, your opponent can decide to stop playing pokemon and instead focus on the mtg aspects, maybe looting away most pokemon. (Also, does your opponent still get a price if you sacrifice your pokemon, to claw of gix for example?) And finally the resource split: If you want to play mtg cards, you will need to try and keep up with playing out a land per turn, if you want to play pokemon cards, you will need to dedicate your land cards to your pokemon. Unless you have two times the normal card draw somehow, keeping up with both would be unviable, so either, you need to accept that pokemon will only have 1-2 energy under normal conditions, and you will only have 2-3 land on the field, or you will need to drop either conventional mtg cards, relying fully on pokemon, or rely fully on mtg cards, defeating the points (except for helping out mill and making tutor toolbox/combo decks worse, as they might get part of their urza's saga package in the prize zone.) Overall, I like the idea, however the games don't really like existing side by side. I like the way you made them share resources, however it will also make them cut each other off

  • @RedBobcatGames

    @RedBobcatGames

    I mean, yeah to basically everything you said. I think that's the beauty of it though. It is jank, and you'll end up running cards you normally never would. Exactly like old school commander used to be. I also suspect you're right, and the decks will need A LOT more land search options than normal. But, I think (or at least hope) it will balance itself out. For instance, you're right than once you've KOed 5, you're opponent shouldn't play any more Pokémon. BUT if half your deck is about playing Pokémon, you may not have an option. You're also right that it's not Magic, or Pokémon, but very much it's own (terrible abomination) thing as well. Oh, and to answer your question. No, your opponent only draws a prize card if they are the ones to knock out your Pokémon. Sacrificing one, like Exile does nothing. The (poorly written) rules are up for free on my Patreon if you wanna see more Good comment though! Pleasure to read
