There’s a common misconception that getting older means getting weaker, but what if you could improve your fitness level at any age? The truth is, you can.
In today’s Health Bites episode, I’m joined by my dear friend and colleague, Dr. George Papanicolaou, a highly sought-after Functional Medicine practitioner on my team at the Ultra Wellness Center. Together, we explore the incredible benefits of exercise-a free, universally accessible powerhouse drug-from a functional medicine perspective.
We discuss the crucial, often-overlooked aspects of fitness for enhancing longevity, such as VO2 max, how to optimize our levels, and the role our mitochondria play. We also dive into the importance of resistance training and nutrition for enhancing body composition, strength, and muscle mass, vital for metabolic health, recovery from illness, and so much more.
If you’re looking to leverage your exercise routine to enhance your overall health and quality of life, no matter your age, this episode is for you.

They are right. Most doctors were never trained in nutrition and exercise. Only in prescribing drugs for symptomatic relief.

I used to exercise on a regular basis and also did a lot of physical labor. Always felt good slept good and had good emotional well-being. Now that I am in my early 70s I don’t get enough exercise don’t feel good as I used to. Keep telling myself I’m going to get started back exercising but it hasn’t happened as of yet lol. At least I do not take any medication‘s and I get around excellent still can do things I did in my 20s. But I would like to get started back exercising.

Guys, for future reference: If you talk about the importance of V02 max, body composition and strength, it would be really helpful to provide some actual numbers that people can use as a guide. For instance: "Ideally, for a 40, 50, or 60-year-old male, aim for a VO2 max of at least 40, 35, and 30 mL/kg/min, respectively. For women of the same ages, targets of 31, 28, and 24 mL/kg/min. Regarding body composition, men should aim for a body fat percentage of 17% or less, while women should aim for 24% or less. For building muscle, compound free-weight movements like the bench, squat, and deadlift are excellent. Men at a healthy body weight should aim for at least one rep of their body weight on bench press, 125% on squat, and 125% to 150% on deadlift. Women should aim for 50% to 75% of their body weight for bench press, 75% to 100% for squat, and 100% to 125% for deadlift."

Dear Dr. Mark, thank you so much for all the talks you present. I can’t express the degree of being grateful for your existence and work on functional medicine that is so needed right now. I’ve been into nutrition since my early 20s (im 37 now) as an amateur and now I’m digging deeper and deeper into the overall science of a healthy lifestyle to change my career. Your information is incredibly useful. Lots of love from Taiwan 🇹🇼 Thank you ❤

The main thing is to become a fat adapted fat burner producing ketones. Exercise is almost a waste otherwise. You cant exercise away a bad diet.

Thank you so much for sharing all the knowledge about health. I have a question that I hope you can answer. In 2011 I was diagnosed with "Graves". After 2 years of medical treatment, the thyroid was still under attack and the decision was made to remove it. Since then I have to take Levaxin daily. I'm of course full of inflammation and all kinds.. My question is, is there any hope at all for me, to better my health even though I don`t have a thyoid anymore?

When I did my military training in Sweden 1979/80, I started on VO2 max of 38 and after 12 months I had 67. What a journey it was for me to experience that change in such a short time. But damn how much we trained during that time.

So the Vo2 max would be interested for me to know because i use to workout at least 3 days a week before i hurt my knee. I have figured out my heart rate runs high and i have low blood pressure but when i use to do kickboxing i would hit the 160 to 170 heart rate and then i would squat down and drop my heart rate with a couple mins, then i would be fine. But that was putting me out of my fat burn area, so know im trying to figure out what i can do since after knee surgery that would make me feel as satisfied. I can do high impact on my knee amymore!:((

Just for a heads up, Vitamin D is essential for your immune system to function. From everything like cancer cells to viral clear up and as soon as you use it the reservoir must be topped up. Guidelines today are basically to stop you getting rickets but if you are in the cold season or feeling under you can take 2 or 3,000 iu a day AND that may tke a week to be assimillated and synthesized in the liver and kidneys into the bodies usable molecule. Ignore any scare stiries of people overdosing on vitamin D - its all from big pharma as people who have enough don't get ill.

just do everything in moderation. We need to be active and eat less. Thats the bottom line. YOu dont have to be the next decathalete in the olympics. Just be active. Forget all this other garbage. Nutrition is still the most understood thing in medicine. I still dont think we know much its a guess.
