Carrying excess weight around your midsection can be frustrating, especially if you maintain a healthy diet and exercise regularly. Yet, millions of people worldwide struggle with their weight,
It is crucial to understand that belly fat is more than just a layer under your clothes. It is an active endocrine organ that secretes pro-inflammatory cytokines throughout the body, contributing to our risk for chronic diseases.
It's important to recognize that this is not a reflection of personal failure. Our modern-day lifestyles are overloaded with stress, environmental toxins, and convenience foods that actively work against us. In today’s ep, we will explore visceral fat (aka belly fat), the factors that contribute to it, and how to address it using the principles of Functional Medicine effectively.
In this episode, I dive into:
Understanding belly fat and obesity (2:51)
The role of diet and lifestyle in the accumulation of belly fat (10:48)
The impact of sleep, alcohol, and stress on weight gain (19:14)
What are obesogens, and how do they make us gain weight? (21:44)
Health risks associated with visceral fat and belly fat (23:05)
Where does conventional medicine miss the mark? (24:14)
Functional medicine's approach to assessing and addressing visceral fat (26:38)
Dietary and lifestyle changes to reduce visceral fat (30:52)

In 2019 I lost 48 pounds of visceral fat by cutting out all alcohol, all processed food, all added sugars. Prioritized great sleep. Never felt better. I lost some “friends” along the way since I don’t dine out in most restaurants anymore, but so worth it!

When only the albumen is eaten, the protein is only 3 grams. The albumen is pure protein whereas the yolk has very beneficial vitamins. This is to say that if a person feels that eating the yolk might raise cholesterol, the nutrition far outweighs the possible unhealthy addition to cholesterol.

This is where I am. According to this, I suppose I am simply eating too much. I was losing at 1100 calories plus 12k steps per day and stalled. So I got worried I was not eating enough. So I have slowly upped my calories to around 1500 and am now gaining about 1/2 pounds per month. This is all over a period of years since starting whole foods and low carb in 2018. I still feel great but have excess fat at around 47% so definitely not just vanity pounds.

  • @warringwomenofzion3427

@@pat-realfoodnanu9050 I also have slowly increased my calories because I had gotten kind of low. And since January have put on almost 10 lb. I am going to track macros tightly and see if I can start losing again at as small of a deficit as I can. I was maintaining and slowly gaining at 1800 to 2000. I have dropped down to 15 to 1600 right now. Just this week. I eat basically carnivore and move at least 10 to 12K steps a day. Plus lift weights. It's the only thing I can think of to change right now. I understand stress has a lot to do with it also. I do my best to manage my stress, with long walks outside, prayer, worship. I'm finally sleeping 8 hours a night so I know it's not that. I just know my body has plenty of fat to release.

I stopped drinking soda fifteen years ago. I haven’t ate baked goods for a year. I haven’t drank alcohol for fifteen years. We don’t eat any processed foods. I have ate steel cut oats for breakfast the past ten years. I eat some eggs more for like a brunch or lunch even. We have cut way way back on carbs as on eating spaghetti only once every other week. We eat organic meats. We don’t ear hardly any fried food except French fries about once per month if that. We only use real butter not margarine. We only use olive oil instead of crisco. We don’t eat snack foods like potato chips. I do eat some Doritos with a little cheese and salsa a few times per week. I sometimes was in a pattern of eating a small pizza once a week but I’m now getting away from that because of all of the dough. We eat brown bread only and it’s a minimum amount of slices per week. For exercise I use a stationary bike at the YMCA during the winter while watching a virtual bike ride on a big screen via KZread. The videos I concentrate on are set up to be HIIT training. Then I ride three or four times per week on my road bike all spring - Fall. What is my weakness you might ask. I eat a little bit of chocolate. And yes I know, it should be dark chocolate but it’s not.

We live in a time when NOTHING is our fault . Even criminals, it’s not their fault. He said “too many calories” nobody makes someone eat too much or have a job that has no exercise or prevents them from exercising if they do have a low energy job. Phones, tv, gaming, smoking, getting high, drinking…nobody forces people As far as the food industry, they want to sell their products ….no less than a 5 Star restaurant does and their chef pumps it full sugar, starch, fat and salts . Even animals get fat by overeating when they don’t hunt their foods and they aren’t eating ultra processed foods . We eat often because we have a good life of plentiful cheap food with microwaves and air fryers and stoves and gas grills and drive throughs which means easy food at our fingertips My grandparents weren’t fat but they are processed foods. My grandma cooked on a wood stove. They heated by wood. They butchered their chickens and pigs and cows, they grew most of their vegetables. They ate biscuits and bread but my grandma made them. There was no TV , heck they didn’t even have an indoor bathroom. They are sugar too

You clearly have done so too Dr Hyman...a veritable mine of knowledge! There is nothing to stop them (Drs) learning except their own narrow-mindedness. IMHO...❤

Mark. I appreicate the effort you have put into this video. However, i want to point out that sprinting (short distance/time, maximum effort) seems to enhance or increase the rate of visceral fat reduction. Sean O'Mara pointed this out in many videos where he works with patients and has researched this issue extensively using MRI imaging to show this. I started sprinting recently as a result, and it seems to be true. I have been doing it gradually to reconstruct the necessary muscular support for that form of exercise. I have increased my speed and have less injurious pain each time. But, in 1.5 months i have noted that my internal fat is or seems to be decreasing. I am a carnivore, but for 20 months i was still eating some carbs some of the time. Everytime I ate carbs my body would respond negatively. Now, two full months of pure animal based diet all of those issues are stopped, and I am ketogenic now day and night. I note that this is helping me as well. While I love vegetables and was an 80%veggie 20% other (grain and meat), I just kept getting sicker and sicker for some unknown and undiagnosed reason. No diet Ibteied seemed to help, until the carnivore diet. That not only helped, it significantly reduced or eliminated all my issues in various time windows from 2 weeks to a year, even though I was still eating carbs on occasion. The complete recovery of certain symptoms did not happen until i completely abstained from all other foods except animal based food. That may be just an association, but, it is concrete to me that for now, it is absolutely therapeutic and restoring my body to a higher state of health.

Just saw video from Dr. Eric Berg- it is specifically "high fructose corn syrup" as opposed to regular cane sugar that has increased in consumption 8,000% in the last 50 years. Also, maltodextein is in everything, listed as a carbohydrate spikes blood sugar much worse than sugar. Makes sense poor sleep , poorer health- sleep is when your body "cleans and heals" itself- does maintenance. Just like anyhing else, if you don't keep something clean and maintained, it will start to not work, break down.. In general - the life style most of us live is unsustainable. We are ruining the earth and killing ourselves. Dr. Hyman always says if God /nature didnt make it, don't eat it. Humans have made the mistake in thinking that nature needs fixed, yet everytime we think we know better than nature we screw things up. Same with food- Eat real food- not too much- simple. But, we eat mostly " food like substances- posing as food" thus we are overfed and undernourished not only foodwise , but quality of life wise. Dr. Hyman searching for truth and connecting dots and sharing complex science in a way the average person can understand - THANKYOU!
