STARTING And DRIVING A 1976 Dodge Dump Truck That SAT For YEARS
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
On Mother's Day we headed down to my grandparents house to help them out and do a little cleaning. Part of that included getting this 1976 Dodge D600 dump truck running to take scrap iron to the recyclers. This old dump truck used to belong to the city of Winfield, KS and grandpa picked it up an auction when I was maybe 10 years old. You can see it's very well equipped with a 2 speed rear end, dump bed, tommy lift, and a ball hitch so this one truck can do basically anything you want!

That's most definetly of the early to mid 70's cab. Distributor in the back is small block. Most likely a 360.

Usually a 360 has a larger 2 bbl carb i'm pretty sure thats a 318
@danielscott6787

Could be a 318. My thinking is a 360 due to it's ablity to make low RPM torque. 2 barrels on a slow RPM engines tend to make more torque as well. Just what a dump truck with a 2 speed rearend would want!

That motor is a small block because the distributor is in the back so it is most likely a 360 or 318 big blocks have the distributor in the front

You are correct, it is a small block but not a 360. It is very likely a 318. Dodge's medium duty trucks of that era were equipped with either the 225 slant 6 or optional 318 V8 on the D500. On the D600, the 318 V8 was the standard engine, while a 361 or 413 V8 was optional. On the D700, the 361 V8 was the standard engine and the 413 V8 optional.
Another fun day w/ dad. My 1st Wheeler Dealer car was an 01 Audi TT with 10% brakes. Drove it like that from KC to OMA. Probably not the smartest thing I've done but it makes for a good story. That was 10 yrs ago. I'm getting ready to take my 928 out around the neighborhood in the next day or two on its maiden voyage in 7 yrs so can relate to this video.
You and your Dad are like two peas in a pod. The resemblance is amazing! Great video.
To the 43 people that hit dislike on someone working on their grandfather's farm truck to help them out, I give the most fond "suck it." Glad to see someone respecting their family's heritage. We had a big old Chevy with a dump bed on the farm when I was a kid and what I'd give to have another ride in that.

Hi JR!! Love the Truck!! The sound of starter is cool Gotta Love it.
I Have almost this exact set-up, except its a W300 cab, 4WD, 3 speed auto. Interior is the same - even the big red PTO knobs. All the problems they had with ethanol are VERY common. I rebuilt my carb and dumped about 2Tsp of crap out of the bowl. Luckily you guys don't seem to have a thermoquad on it. Was a work truck too - for the state of MN. Has the same worn redish-orange color.
Yay 200k subs!! Congrats JR!!!
Old girl needs a tune up which might cure many of it's issues. Beautiful truck, I was looking at a GMC or Dodge from the era with a dumb bed until I got a lucky deal on a 1st gen Cummins. Great vid, thanks for sharing!
That dodge is an awesome old truck love old vehicles like this!
John- go get a starter for a '89 Ram truck with the 360. Bolts in, 1/2 the weight, less than 1/2 the draw, and spins the engine at twice the speed than the old Indy starter can. Also, rebuild the carb & replace all the old flex fuel hose...unless you like fires- a nice 4-bbl intake & carb would be nice, too. The Mopar bulkhead connectors are notorious for corrosion, great idea is to clean & "Electro " grease the contact points- many guys even run the power wire via it's own wire straight in through the firewall, bypassing the bulkhead connector. Oh, instrument cluster regulator- replace the old bimetal one on the back of the cluster with the electronic one available here (if it fails, you will cook your instrument cluster & the wiring in the dash quite possibly)- www.rt-eng.com/index.php/RTE_limiter.html

The high torque starter may not mesh with the fly wheel. Those old medium duty /industrial 318s were little different in some respects from the lighter duty engines. The crank is forged for example and the clutch would of course different...so did the stay the flywheel the same? Btw those old dodge starters all sound like that.

@@dwaynepenner2788 Starts my '70 casting 340, 4-speed very easily. The flywheel might make the difference, but you can always trial fit. Use to always laugh when "Mopar Performance" sold them as "High torque/racing starters." Biggest crock, it was a direct bolt-in Nippondenso for the slant 6 up thru the 440. Heck, I even put one on my Travco motor home. Straight bolt up, 440 Industrial motor.
