STARTING And DRIVING A 1976 Dodge Dump Truck That SAT For YEARS

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

On Mother's Day we headed down to my grandparents house to help them out and do a little cleaning. Part of that included getting this 1976 Dodge D600 dump truck running to take scrap iron to the recyclers. This old dump truck used to belong to the city of Winfield, KS and grandpa picked it up an auction when I was maybe 10 years old. You can see it's very well equipped with a 2 speed rear end, dump bed, tommy lift, and a ball hitch so this one truck can do basically anything you want!

You are correct, it is a small block but not a 360. It is very likely a 318. Dodge's medium duty trucks of that era were equipped with either the 225 slant 6 or optional 318 V8 on the D500. On the D600, the 318 V8 was the standard engine, while a 361 or 413 V8 was optional. On the D700, the 361 V8 was the standard engine and the 413 V8 optional.

John- go get a starter for a '89 Ram truck with the 360. Bolts in, 1/2 the weight, less than 1/2 the draw, and spins the engine at twice the speed than the old Indy starter can. Also, rebuild the carb & replace all the old flex fuel hose...unless you like fires- a nice 4-bbl intake & carb would be nice, too. The Mopar bulkhead connectors are notorious for corrosion, great idea is to clean & "Electro " grease the contact points- many guys even run the power wire via it's own wire straight in through the firewall, bypassing the bulkhead connector. Oh, instrument cluster regulator- replace the old bimetal one on the back of the cluster with the electronic one available here (if it fails, you will cook your instrument cluster & the wiring in the dash quite possibly)- www.rt-eng.com/index.php/RTE_limiter.html

The high torque starter may not mesh with the fly wheel. Those old medium duty /industrial 318s were little different in some respects from the lighter duty engines. The crank is forged for example and the clutch would of course different...so did the stay the flywheel the same? Btw those old dodge starters all sound like that.

Good ole Kansas. I love the big open properties, you'd have to be in east Co almost Kansas for that. I'd give my left arm to fish out some catfish from there and have Grandma cook it up in some corn meal. Good times out there.

I want that truck lol. I have always had a liking of old medium duty trucks and school busses for some reason.

I had an old 77 orange Dodge D150 from the MN highway dept with a slant 6 and an automatic. I loved that truck but it got awful mileage and I had to sell it. Cool old dump truck.

JR that truck would make the perfect car hauler for your channel. It is one beast of a truck if you could figure out a ramp system for it. It would make a great car hauler.

Dude, thanks for the memories. As soon as I heard that starter sound and saw the old triangle logo my mind immediately flashed back to the 67 Coronet sedan my grandparents had. It became mine for a brief period. I slightly kick myself for selling it for $400.
