Stacy's Video Diary: Jac- Episode 8-Fourth Day, Part 2- Disengage hip; not looking for perfect

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Jac 2 hours 5 minutes. This is the second half of day four. Stacy explains how to teach a horse to 'disengage the hip' also known as a 'turn on the forehand' including tips for the handler, such as how far to stand away from the horse when asking for the turn.
Stacy also talks about: keeping the horse out of your space, how using subtle cues now builds into subtle cues later, knowing every inch of your horses body, noticing things about Jac; head tilt, chiropractor, leads, and turning out with other horses.
This is the story of two-year-old Jacs Electric Whiz (Jac), the last baby out of Whizards Baby Doll, better known as "Roxy". Roxy touched the hearts of horse lovers around the world when she and Stacy Westfall made history with their bareback and bridleless freestyle reining ride. The loss of Roxy in 2012 has left a void in the equine community. Although nobody can replace her, Roxy's spirit lives on, not only in our hearts, but in Jac as well.Join us as we follow Jac through weekly videos documenting his training journey from his first session to his first show and more. It is a journey filled with questions, breakthroughs, setbacks and accomplishments... and everything in between.

Thank you so much for making these videos, I've always wanted to see step by step on how it's done to train a horse. There my fav animal. My daughter loves them too. He's so funny with his head and how he always wants to try and be close to you.

You mention in this episode the hair swirls. Although I vaguely remember hearing the oldtimers talk about when growing up around the track, I never paid much attention until a month ago a friend posted a link to a very interesting article. Since then I have done some further research and have found that personality traits do seem to follow the theories. You said you didn't believe in "swirlology" because Roxy had the double swirls and she was not difficult to train. 1. It depends how the swirls are situated. Side by side is different from one on top of another. (Quote from article: "This type of double swirl seems to give the ability to hyper focus. These horses are challenging and gritty, like most double swirl horses, but the ability to hyper focus and not back down from a challenge can be an asset in professional hands.") 2. I noticed long ago in my 40+ yrs training that horses labelled "difficult, dangerous, hard to handle" were almost always highly intelligent and when handled correctly those nasty tendencies disappeared. 3. Remember who trained Roxy! Someone else may not have done half so well with her!

During ground work, yes, the hip disengage works the same. Once we move to their backs, going slow-yes, going fast-not recommended.

I was told the two swirls meant they are smart, quick learners and thinkers... seem to be so with mine. i have a mare with 2 and the other with 1...the lil mare with 2 seems to pick up things quicker than the other. But both are very intelligent.

I like how she gets the horse trust by rubbing over his back and legs

Clinton Anderson sells the best ones. I bought a cheapie and found it awkward and tiring to use. I used a friend's Clinton one, and noticed right away it didn't tire me out. Did side by side comparison.. Clinton's is weighted on the end so the centrifical (sp?) force does the work. Of course, Clinton's is outrageously expensive, but you get what you pay for...

Flo Browne I agree that the cheap ones are not worth it. The string makes a huge difference. I make one with Weaver and it is high quality. westfallhorsemanship.com/shop/product/29/
