Stacy's Video Diary:Jac- Episode 26-Horse training is a conversation between horse and human

Total training time 50 hours 5 minutes
The first three minutes of this video are incredibly valuable, must watch material.
Horse training is a conversation-people often make the mistake of thinking this is a one way conversation; teacher to student.
The horse is the student...but the student gets to ask questions.
Watch Jac's body language from the beginning until 1:36. Jac is saying, "Teacher, Stacy, you've been really consistent and everyday we end on one of two things; backing up or spinning to the right...can we be done now?"
Two mistakes that people make:
1) people miss that this is happening at all
2) punish the student for asking a question
The mistake people make is that they punish the student for asking the question. They will end up shutting the student down; stoping them from asking questions.
The horse is allowed to ask questions. He is not allowed to demand. I won't let this become a safety issue. I will gently discourage unless he really steps it up and then I will really come down on discouraging the behavior.
Stacy demonstrates the improvement in Jac's bend and counter bend.
Prerequisites for changing to a shanked bit:
1) horse must be able to bend and counter-bend
2) horse must be able to 'step-around', turn 360 degrees confidently and consistently
Stacy demonstrates Jac current knowledge of stopping, which isn't much. This will serve as a reference point as Jac learns to stop and eventually slide.
This is the story of two-year-old Jacs Electric Whiz (Jac), the last baby out of Whizards Baby Doll, better known as "Roxy". Roxy touched the hearts of horse lovers around the world when she and Stacy Westfall made history with their bareback and bridleless freestyle reining ride. The loss of Roxy in 2012 has left a void in the equine community. Although nobody can replace her, Roxy's spirit lives on, not only in our hearts, but in Jac as well.
Join us as we follow Jac through weekly videos documenting his training journey from his first session to his first show and more. It is a journey filled with questions, breakthroughs, setbacks and accomplishments... and everything in between.

Reminds me of my dog. She's learned several tricks and will do them all at once for her treat.

Reminds me of something I was told, "If you want to recognize a horse's problem start by looking in a mirror"

I just love watching you and Jac have your "discussions". I've been riding horses and training them for over 30 years, and I really like your approach. Two way conversations are always more productive than a one way conversation.

He's got such a pretty lope! I know he's not a pleasure horse but his front leg is so nice, haha. He looks fun to ride. :)

My horse does this in a safety issue. Every time he backs up, I know he's about to rear.
