Stacy's Video Diary: Jac- Episode 24-teaching a horse to spin (day 1) and improving steering

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Total Training Time- 40 hours 30 minutes
In this video Stacy talks about spurs, moving a horses shoulder (spiral out), improving steering and beginning to teach Jac to spin.
Stacy began riding Jac with spurs around 30 hours of training by using a simple slip on English type nub spur. Around 40 hours of training Stacy moved to a traditional 10 point rowel spur. Stacy explains that spurs have rowels because they are designed to be rolled on the horses side.
Stacy reviews why and how she taught Jac to understand the inside rein from the first ride until now by not using the outside rein during early training.
At the 3 minute mark, Stacy moves into how she introduces using the outside rein and why.
A week earlier, in Episode 23, Jac was introduced to to the idea of spiraling out or moving his shoulder.
In this video at 2:20 is a great demonstration of spiral out performed by a horse with one week of practice. Spiral out is Stacy's prerequisite before she begins teaching the spin and it also leads into counter-bending.
Notice at the 5 minute mark how Jac is stretching his neck and lowering his head as a side effect of these exercises.
At the 6 minute mark Stacy explains how she will be using the inside rein and outside leg when she asks Jac to turn tighter and begin to think about spinning.
Notice how the repetition of turning right, right, right, right, right, plays a part in Jac catching on to the idea of the spin.
At 8:15 Stacy explains how the back up and the start of the spin are tied together and how she will begin using an exercise that will work on both.
This is the story of two-year-old Jacs Electric Whiz (Jac), the last baby out of Whizards Baby Doll, better known as "Roxy". Roxy touched the hearts of horse lovers around the world when she and Stacy Westfall made history with their bareback and bridleless freestyle reining ride. The loss of Roxy in 2012 has left a void in the equine community. Although nobody can replace her, Roxy's spirit lives on, not only in our hearts, but in Jac as well.
Join us as we follow Jac through weekly videos documenting his training journey from his first session to his first show and more. It is a journey filled with questions, breakthroughs, setbacks and accomplishments... and everything in between.

My gosh he looks A LOT like Roxy. Especially the way he held his head at the end of the video. Great job, Stacy. I've enjoyed following you and Jac on this training journey. :)

Just curious why you don't use your legs when asking Jac to back up? I've always been taught to use my legs (whether it be just one leg or both legs) if I'm looking for them to move in any direction including backing up! :)
